Accidentally Calling Elite Spies

Agent River Pierce

"No need to do that, sweetie." She said, swiftly taking my phone and ending the call. I gaped at her in disbelief, already reaching to take back my phone.

"I was just followed by three men, all the way from campus." I explained in a hurry. "They were dressed in all black."

I pointed to the four suited men on my sofa. "Just like them. Let me call the police!"

My mum shook her head at me with an amused expression. "No, you're misunderstanding. Sit down, and listen to what we have to say."

I narrowed my eyes at her, before giving in; it seemed like she knew what was going on. "Okay, but stay by me." I wanted her far from these strangers, although she seemed to be comfortable around them.

She held her hands up. "I'm going to get our guests some drinks."

Before I could protest, she had left the room in a flash, leaving me alone with these strangers. Rather than sitting down, I stood as far as I could across the room, away from them.

The eldest looking man cleared his throat, drawing my attention to him. "Hello Amelia. My name is Michael, and I can assure you that we have nothing to do with those men who, you say, were following you."

Three of them were watching me with serious expressions, except for the youngest looking one. He looked bored, clearly wanting to be anywhere else but here. Just when I was about to look away, his striking eyes caught mine in an instant. I almost recoiled from the shock I got from seeing his eyes, they were a silvery colour.

Very unusual.

I'm sure he'd be casted off the street, if a modelling agency member had seen him. He definitely is the type to turn heads, with his sleek black hair, structured, chiselled face, and those mesmerising eyes. His intense stare matched mine, two strangers meeting in questionable circumstances.

I tore my gaze from him, not bothering to take another glance. I didn't need to, one look is all it took to remember someone's face.

"It's too much of a coincidence." I stated, looking unimpressed as I folded my arms. "Explain your presence in my home."

The men exchanged looks before answering my question. "For us to properly explain, we'd have to take you to a neutral location. Somewhere that we know is safe to speak about matters like this." Michael started to respond.

"No." I told them firmly.

Like hell were we going to go with them.

They refused to answer my simple question, and every part of my body was screaming at me to grab mum and run away. I shifted in my spot, and glanced out the window; already spotting five random men spread across my street. One of them was sitting on a bench, right next to mum's silver car.

My scowl deepened, realising the house was surrounded.

Who were they, and what did they want?

"Why have you surrounded your men around my home?" I asked them calmly. "Do you realise how shady you look and sound?"

Surprised looks flashed across their face, startled that I had been able to spot their men so easily. Their men weren't wearing black, or in suits, but they definitely looked out of place.

I knew the faces of everyone living on this street, including every visitor, cleaner and postman I've seen walk these streets. Not to mention how all five men are coincidentally and strategically placed along the street.

Nothing can get by me.

"You're incredibly observant, aren't you?" The man beside Michael said, readjusting his glasses. "Those men are placed there for your protection, we know who had followed you today."

"You do?"

"I have drinks!" My mum strolled in, somehow carrying six different bottles and glass cups.

My eyes widened when I noticed that three of them belonged to me. I opened my mouth to tell her, when I caught a quick warning glare from her. That warning glare alone meant, 'I know that they're your drinks, but don't say a word or else.'

My precious Pepsi...

I zipped my lips, not wanting to dig my own grave by speaking out in front of guests. Unwanted guests, by the way.

"Mum, can you explain why you're fine with them being here?" I asked her, gesturing to the men.

"I know them."

I gaped at her in disbelief. "You...what?"

"I know them, and they're here to keep you safe." She continued, helping them pour their drinks. "We'll leave with them, as soon as we can. Everything will be explained once we're at a different location. They're not bad people Lia, unlike the men from earlier."

"You could've saved me from wasting my breath, by telling me that earlier." I complained, rubbing my temples.

"Attitude. Watch it." She warned me.

I turned to the men, who were finishing their drinks. The silver eyed guy politely refused the fizzy drinks, and opted for a glass of plain water instead. I frowned at the floor, these guys were going to explain why the men from earlier were following me?

They stood up, ready to leave, before Michael approached me. I stiffened, my eyes narrowing at him with wariness. "I just want to take a look at your phone." He told me, holding his hand out towards me. "There's something I need to check, so I'd appreciate it if you unlocked it."

I glanced at my mum in confusion. Why does he want to take the only communication device I had on me? She nodded her head, encouraging me to comply. I sighed heavily and unlocked my phone, making the silver eyed guy roll his eyes.

What was his problem?

"If we get kidnapped by these guys, it's your fault." I mumbled to her, handing my phone to him. "Talk about an invasion of privacy."

He chuckled at my words, before clicking onto my call history. "You had called us earlier today." He told me gravely, showing me the number.

I took a sharp intake of breath, recognising the weird number. "They said they were an insurance company." I started to say. "I saw a number saved under my father's name on my mum's phone, so I called it out of curiosity."

"We're not an insurance company." Michael corrected me. "I'll let you know more about us, when we get to the neutral location."

He proceeded to turn off my phone before giving it back to me.

"You suspect I've been tracked down because of my phone?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "I'm sure there isn't a tracking device on it, I have my phone on me at all times."

The silver eyed guy, sighed heavily before speaking for the first time. "She needs to have everything explained to her, like a kid." He retorted, annoyance lacing his voice. "We've been here too damn long."

I bit my tongue, not wanting my mouth to get me into trouble. "So? Are we going with them?" I asked mum, completely ignoring him. However, feeling his cold stare on me was something that was hard to ignore.

"Yes."

It only took us a minute before we climbed into one of their big black vehicles. Mum and I took the seats in the back, and sat through a thirty minute drive. It was only when we arrived to a gated property did I sit up to look around, there wasn't another building in the area.

The gate had opened after careful inspections, and we pulled up to the large driveway. Once everyone had parked, we hopped out and followed Michael inside the large building. The interior was grand and luxurious, but I couldn't figure out whether this was a home or not.

We were led to these large, closed double-doors. Michael knocked three consecutive times, before someone called out, "You may come in."

I frowned, immediately recognising that voice.

The doors opened, revealing a large conference table with one person sitting at the head of it. I audibly gasped, my eyes widening in shock as I took in their face.

"Hello Lia." My father greeted me.

What. The. Fuck?

I stood in the doorway, unable to move my feet. I felt like I was looking at a ghost, I was almost convinced he had died. Why had he not reached out? Was he in this country the past three years?

Despite the millions of questions racing through my mind, I started to collect myself and remain calm. There's a reason behind everything, if I stayed patient, I may be getting my questions answered.

I walked further into the room, being invited to sit down. Realising I hadn't replied to his greeting, I nodded at him in acknowledgment.

"Hello Maria." He greeted my mum, to which she coldly ignored.

I stared at their interaction, what the hell was going on?

Everyone had sat down on a seat, bringing out documents and papers. The atmosphere was incredibly heavy, as everyone strolled into the room quietly. The silver eyed guy sat beside me, on my right, sighing when all the other seats were taken.

Okay, did I do something to him...or what?

The doors closed once everyone was present. I sat up in my seat, finally I was going to get some answers.

"Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well." My father spoke up, adjusting his tie. "We have gathered here to talk about the recent activities of The Draconic Syndicate. This morning, Amelia Kingston, had called the NSM in her pursuit to reach out to me. She obtained the number from her mother's, Maria Kingston, phone. We understand that the number was saved under my name, and was highlighted that it is only to be used in emergencies."

"NSM?" I whispered to my left, where mum was seated, in confusion.

"National Security Ministry." She whispered back. I racked my brains, confused when I couldn't recognise the name.

My father glanced at me and quickly explained. "The National Security Ministry is a classified section of the SIS."

"The Secret Intelligence Service?" I questioned in disbelief, looking around the room. "So you guys are members of the SIS?"

I glanced at my mother's serious expression, as the reality sunk in. Was it because of his job that he had vanished from our lives? The British public knew about SIS, but it's more commonly known as MI6.

Michael cleared his throat. "Let me explain what the SIS does, in simple terms."

"You guys secretly work overseas, develop foreign contacts and gather intelligence for the sake of the country. The whole aim of this government organisation is to protect the UK by ensuring that there are no risks to our national security, military effectiveness and economy." I beat him to it, telling them what I knew.

A stunned silence.

Looking around the room everyone wasn't expecting me to know so much about them. Only my parents didn't seem surprised, since they knew what I was like.

"You guys have a website." I added with a smile. They didn't exactly hide their existence, but they kept everything else top secret.

"However, I'm not familiar with the National Security Ministry." I frowned in thought.

"That's because it is a section of the secret service we have not disclosed to the public." A dark skinned guy replied, his dark eyes finding mine.

I glanced at him in surprise, he looked much younger than everyone else. When he smiled my way, I couldn't help but think how handsome he looked. I looked away, it was not the time to mentally compliment people.

"The Draconic Syndicate had been monitoring that emergency line, ever since they got a hold of that number. They were notified as soon as the number was used, and tracked down the caller. That's how they were able to track her down and follow her, it's very likely that they know where she lives." Michael spoke up. "We believe that The Draconic Syndicate is under the impression that Amelia is a member of NSM."

"Isn't NSM a top secret organisation?" I asked with a frown. "So how does the syndicate knows about it?"

"Unfortunately, they are aware of its existence." My father replied gravely. "This syndicate is a highly organised crime group, and extremely wealthy. They're extremely dangerous, and they believe you are a solid lead to NSM. You were able to escape from three of their members, so easily too. I'm sure they have no reason to not believe you're a British agent..."

"How..." The dark skinned guy spoke up. "How did you escape them?"

Everyone's curious gaze fell on me.

I shrugged in response, too lazy to explain.

"She has a talent in shaking people off her tail, she used to give me a headache when she was younger. Tag and hide and seek was never an option for games to play..." My father shuddered at the memories. "I learnt my lesson."

"He would rush back home, claiming he lost our child." My mum spoke up for the first time. Everyone chuckled, amused that their senior couldn't find a child.

He readjusted his tie and cleared his throat. "Unfortunately, as you may have realised, your life is in danger. If they were to get a hold of you, there is no telling what lengths they would go to squeeze information from you."

Michael nodded at his words and added, "So we have decided to put you under our protection, as we work hard to lesson the immediate threat."

I leaned back on my seat, taking this all in. "Okay, I understand."

He glanced at my father and sighed. "On the orders of your father, he insisted we get River Pierce, one of our top agents to become your bodyguard."

Dad raised an eyebrow at him. "I only insisted because he wasn't allocated a mission. He isn't, is he?"

"No sir, but-."

"I rest my case, Michael." He said firmly. He turned to me with a apologetic expression. "I'm afraid we'll have to separate you from your mother, Lia."

I straightened up in my seat, my fist coming into contact with the wooden table. "You're separating us? Why?"

My parents exchanged glances, making my heart sink. "The syndicate aren't aware of who your family are. It's best that they don't see our faces, it would make matters worse."

That's true...

But have they forgotten what I'm like? It's so obvious to me that they were hiding something more...

"And...?" I said, wanting them to carry on.

Michael gulped loudly, finally understanding I'm not easy to fool. From the corner of my eye, I noticed the silver eyed guy glance at me in curiosity.

"That's all." Mum said with finality. I nodded, slowly leaning back into my seat. It was clear they weren't going to tell me more, and I had to accept that...for now.

"Alright." I agreed with a sigh. "What are the living arrangements?"

"You'll both be living in a safe house, moving around the city every couple weeks." Michael explained, looking down at his notes. "Your mother will also live in a different safe house that is under our protection."

"I understand we shouldn't be seen together, I don't see why we can't live in the same 'safe house'." I pointed out, raising an eyebrow. "As long as we leave at separate times, there shouldn't be an issue."

"Just trust they have good reasons in formulating this plan." The silver eyed dude spoke up for the first time. I turned to look at him, getting a good look at his expression.

He was clearly annoyed by my constant questioning. He looked away, his jaw hardening. "She's so annoying, I don't want to babysit her."

Babysit?

I put my forehead on the table, my long hair spreading across it. "Please don't tell me this guy is River Pierce." I groaned, bringing my head back up. "Are you telling me I'm stuck with the grumpiest and rudest guy in the room?!"

The dark skinned guy from earlier laughed out loud. "Actually, Hyemin is the most grumpy!" He retorted, pointing at the pale, petite girl beside her. She wore an unimpressed expression, her face void of any emotion.

I took one look at her before saying, "I stand corrected."

"I forgot to introduce you to the team you'll be seeing frequently." My father spoke up. "Beside you is River Pierce, he'll be protecting you pretty much 24/7 so please get along. That chatty boy over there is Caleb Harrison, I'm sure you'll get along just fine. The quiet girl beside him is Hyemin Kim, don't get in her way and you should be fine. The twins beside her are Nura and Isaac El-Sayed, they're a bit of a handful since they're so hyper."

I couldn't help but chuckle at their introduction, it seems like I was stuck with an interesting sounding group. They looked to be around my age.

"I wonder what your real names are..." I retorted with a smirk, making everyone in the room freeze. Even River froze in his seat, not expecting me to have caught on so easily.

"Forget what I said." I told them with a laugh, waving it off. "It's nice to meet you all."

Michael cleared his throat, loosening his collar. "When you said your daughter was observant, you weren't exaggerating, sir."

My father chuckled lowly, organising the papers in front of him. "Extremely observant and smart. I hadn't insisted River to take up this mission for nothing, I know how valuable he is to the force. But I honestly couldn't think of anyone more perfect to protect such a person like Lia."

He looked up and caught River's gaze. "The worst thing you could do, is underestimate her. If it were any other agent protecting her, she would easily be able to get out their sight. That's why I assigned you to this mission, keep her in your sight and protect her. I wish you the best of luck."

I gaped at my father, he's actually doing the most. He made me sound like an uncooperative, crazy girl.

I heard Caleb mutter, "She can't be that bad, right?"

Nura and Isaac spoke up, speaking in unison. "Agent River Pierce was especially assigned and requested to protect her, so our guess is...yes."

I raised my eyebrows at them, did they always speak at the same time? Talk about creepy...

"Meeting is adjourned."

And with that, everyone stood up from their seats and started to leave the room. River, the chatty guy, Caleb, the quiet girl, Hyemin, and the twins, Nura and Isaac, stayed behind with parents and I.

"Look around, Lia." My father told me. "These are the agents who you'll be living with from today, they all bring in different sets of skills and expertise to ensure the syndicate does not come close to you. Expect River to be at your side the most, he is your bodyguard."

River and I glanced, and then glared at each other, before simultaneously sighing. Everyone else gave us weird looks, confused as to why we already didn't get along.

"Okay, Caleb and I are driving." River announced, standing up and leaving the room. "Three in each car, and Amelia is with me."

I quickly said goodbye to my parents, giving them a hug, not sure when I see them again. It seemed like they were about to have a serious discussion once I left.

"Lia is fine." I grumbled, not used to hearing my entire name.

Everyone else nodded, taking note of my request, as we followed him out. I hadn't noticed how damn tall the guy was, completely towering over my 5ft and 5 inches figure. My guess was that he was a little over six feet, probably 6ft and 2 inches?

He ignored me, climbed into the drivers seat and adjusted the seat. His brilliant eyes met mine, as he gestured for me to climb into the passenger side. I got in without complaining, noticing Hyemin, the quiet one, had got into the back.

I put my seatbelt on, and leaned into the leather seats. The car roared to life, and we started to move from the driveway. I looked out of the window, starting to wonder what my future was looking like.
