Death
Red.
Red everywhere.
On the road, on the poll lamp, on the fence, on the truck, and on her unrecognizably damaged body.
Yaya gazed down her own flesh which drenched in red blood, her own blood. The stiff liquid was still oozing out from below. The top of her body was crushed under the truck beyond the point of recognition - the main reason of her tragedy end. Yaya swore she had caught her cold and bent in weird directions limbs had twisted one or twice.
A bloody mess.
The sight was enough to make an adult screamed and went straight home, shut the door tightly and never walked out for next few days, not mention to the nightmares would plague them every time they closed their eyes.
A disgusting mess of what used her body.
Her stomach turned. Yaya slapped a hand to her mouth and bent forward. Her mouth opened wide and she groaned.
But nothing came out.
Not even salva.
She never thought there would be a one day she miss the ability of vomiting. The feeling of your stomach turned nonstop but there was nothing inside was strange.
And frustrated.
Annoying.
If she would lose some faculties after die, why she still could smell?
The heavy metal taste filled the air mix with smoke and smell of the fresh flesh made her nose wiggled. Yaya had tried her best not to gag. A thought popped out, since she didn't need to breath anymore, maybe she could pinch her nose to stop this bothersome smell.
Play with the thought, she chuckled at herself and shook her head.
Not like it was mattered now.
The girl let out a long sighed at the thought and stepped, she meant, floated back. Why she could be so nonchalant while her corpse was right there? Yaya actually had passed her after death crisis, which was only about twenty minutes ago.
At first, the moment she reopened her eyes, Yaya simply had thought she was tripped, and became very worried about being late for her graduation test.
Until a random guy ran through her.
Yaya had yelped out of shock, then she realized she could see the road under her hands, and how the grass on the sidewalk were swaying in the wind but she felt nothing.
Or how her feet didn't touch the ground.
Or a completely damaged body of some girls wearing same clothes, same pink hijab as her laid under the truck right beside.
Yaya screamed, then screamed again, again. And again.
But nobody paid her a mind.
Because she was a ghost.
She had flew around frantically for fifteen minutes. The memories of her life so far began to flash on her mind bit by bit. The tests, the university she had chosen, the part-time jobs, a little brother who merely nine years younger and a widowed mother.
Yaya was surprised that there was a tightened feeling inside her chest despite the lack of a heart.
Anyway, she had been desperate and tried to call out for attention from people who surrounded the accident, to beg someone, someone please wake her up and tell her everything just a dream. Yaya even tried to enter back to her mess of a body, by laying on it, multiply, before admitting it was a stupid idea.
It costed about an hour for her to give up and accept this was her reality.
Yaya bit back a sigh and looked up to the sky, ignoring the weird sensation when frantical people accidentally ran through her body. She raised one of her now transparent hands and examined the light that passed through it.
A deep blue sky of summer day, with pure white clouds and golden sun rays. Closing her caramel eyes, beside the noise came from the accident nearby, she could hear clearly the tweeting of an unknown bird and the song of rustled leaves whenever a wind blew. Yaya felt some of her ghostly hair gently swaying and the very faint warm, probably from the sun above, on her translucent skin.
...Not a bad day to die.
As strange as it sounded, all these things somehow put her soul was at peace. Something tugged at her non-existed heart.
Just how long since she could enjoy nature like this?
Since her father passed away, almost eighteen years of Yaya's life was devoted in studying, helping her mother and working nonstop to support family and pay tuitions for herself and her younger brother. She hardly had time for break or hobby.
Or making friends...
But that was okay, she guessed. Yaya had done the best for her small family, for people she loved hence she held no regret, only a bit sad that she would never say goodbye to her family. It would be rough for them in the future as she died. Still, they would make it, Yaya knew that. Totoitoy might be a ten years old yet she believed her little brother was mature enough to learn how to take care of himself and their mother. And Wawa, her strong and brave mother, would grieve for her death and move on, for her other child's sake. Yaya also hope her insurance money would also help them in the hard time...
<<Death can't come back to life>>
An unspoken rule.
As much as she wanted to, Yaya really couldn't do anything, and wouldn't do anything. She was smart enough to know it better not disturb the said law. She wasn't aware of what could happen if she did, probably some terrible stuff like all hell broke loose or heaven fell or some punishments. Therefore, no way she was going to test it.
Lost in her thoughts, the girl didn't noticed the pit black mist had appeared from nowhere and gathered in front of her. She jumped out of her skin with a yelp and quickly retreated a few steps.
Yaya eyed the strange mist with caution, and a bit curious. Seemed like she was the only one able to see. Everyone else just continued their jobs, not one appeared to be bothered by the existence of the black mist.
The mist started to form into a mess bunch. Yaya frowned at the transformation, wondering if it was a good news or bad news. The bunch got higher and higher until it had a human silhouette, a man, she noticed, in long black coat.
The temperature around them dropped in rapid rate. Yaya could feel goosebumps rose on her skin, which she wondered how on Earth she, a ghost, still got that sensation.
The mysterious man had pale skin, almost as pale as her corpse. He had a little long black hair for a man and a single white streak on it. His eyes, which held an unnervingly cold cyan shade, stared back at her, unblinking. Yaya gulped, all she wanted now was turning around and running, or flying, away, far way from here but it was like some invisible force had kept her here, staying still where she was.
Unknow her anguish, the mysterious man stretched out one of his pale hands and immediately, a great scythe materialized. Yaya couldn't help but gawking at its magnificent beauty. The scythe looked as if it made of purest ice and higher than its owner.
The man twisted it around with ease before resting the ice scythe on his shoulder, let its curved blade gleam under the sunlight. In Yaya's eyes, the scythe looked as if it was glowing a pale blue light.
At the minute Yaya found out identity of the mysterious man. Her breath hitched and her hand shook slightly. An original fear rose inside her, then again, he was the one she had waited for.
Taking all the courage left, Yaya straightened up and glanced at the cold cyan eyes of the man.
"... Take me to my final destination. My life was short but it was fulfilled and happy. I don't have any regrets." Yaya said, amazed by herself for not stuttering.
The man merely looked at her, deep into her eyes, not moving an inch. For a moment seemed like a century, he opened his mouth.
"That's what I suppose to." His low and deep voice oddly echoed on the air. "However..."
"I am afraid that I forget the way."
Silent.
Everything was in dead silence.
The bird, the trees, the wind, the people who were cleaning the mess of an accident which had been making so much noise yet she heard none now.
It deemed like the world was stopped, expected Yaya and that man.
Yaya stared at him while the man copied her manner. No party had made a sound or a movement after that sentence, only the gears inside her brain worked in full speed as his words shrank in.
Did that man, a supernatural - maybe a Death God or something alike, Yaya was still now sure, just nonchalantly admitted he had gotten lost.
This was a joke, right?
"I'm sincere." He added, as if reading her mind. The icy orbs, now she realized they were actually sleepy, boring into her with deadly seriousness.
So... no joke?
Then the magic spell broke.
The next thing she knew, Yaya found herself was laughing, loud and uncontrollably, like she had never laughed in her entire life.
The Death God, she was calling him by that name from now, winced at the sound. He was watching her as if she had lost her mind, maybe she had, but Yaya could bring herself to care. After a while, she was able to stop, her body still shook with laughter. Ther held her stomach, her ghost stomach, and wipped the tears that she wasn't certain if they were there or it was her hand did out of habit.
Not every day you got a Death God came to get you.
Not every day you could see yourself in this down-to-earth situation.
Not even in your wildest dreams.
Her head emptied. There was only single thing repeated in her mind.
That
Damn
Thing
Was
Lost.
A fierce emotion suddenly burned inside her chest. All sadness, resignation, acceptance and fear were little by little replaced for the new ones. Yaya had to resist the urge to punch her own face or that sleep-haunted face in a burst of rage and impatience.
Maybe she should try to shake him, slap him or, if necessary, strangle him so that this so-called God could be back to his senses.
Death is bliss, they said.
It's gonna be fun, they said.
She now was stuck with an idiot who didn't even know the way back despite it was his job.
What a perfect day to die, indeed.
Just wonderful.
