Chapter 27: Building Something New
The mansion slowly came back to life.
For the first time in months, the heavy silence that had weighed over the halls seemed to lift. Sunlight spilled through the windows, and the air no longer buzzed with tension. It felt... lighter. Not perfect, but better.
Liam sat at the dining table with papers scattered in front of him, sleeves rolled up, tie discarded. His brows furrowed as he scribbled notes in the margins of reports, flipping through financial statements with laser focus.
Across from him, Sora tapped at her laptop, her eyes scanning over the Carter Corporation's marketing strategies. She bit her lip, scrolling through numbers and campaign results, a concentrated frown tugging at her face.
"You're wasting money on these ads," Sora said, glancing up. "The return is too low for the cost. Shift focus to product placements instead — it'll build long-term brand presence."
Liam leaned back, rubbing his jaw as he processed her words. "That means renegotiating contracts. It could delay launches."
"But it'll stabilize growth," she countered, eyes sharp. "Short bursts of profit won't save your company. Steady, calculated expansion will."
Liam stared at her for a moment — and then he smiled. Not a smirk or a bitter, sarcastic grin. A real smile. "You sound like a CEO."
Sora flushed but lifted her chin proudly. "I know. After all, I am Sora Wilson, the CEO of Cartelson's wife!"
Liam raised an eyebrow. "Cartelson?"
"I combined Carter and Wilson," she explained with a playful grin. "It sounds powerful, right?"
He chuckled, shaking his head. "It sounds like an empire."
"Exactly. We'll build one together." She squeezed his hand. "No more war. Just us, ruling the world."
They worked side by side for hours, bouncing ideas back and forth, analyzing failures and plotting new strategies. And strangely, it felt natural. Easy. Like they'd slipped into a rhythm they didn't even know they were capable of.
When the clock hit midnight, Liam leaned back with a groan, tossing his pen onto the table. "I haven't worked this hard since I first took over from my father — back when I thought I could fix everything overnight."
Sora stretched her arms, letting out a tired sigh. "Maybe that's the problem. You stopped fighting for this company the way you used to."
Liam's expression softened, and he reached across the table, taking her hand. "Maybe I stopped fighting for a lot of things."
Sora looked at him, her heart tightening. "We're still fighting," she said quietly. "We just... changed the battlefield."
He gave her hand a squeeze, brushing his thumb over her knuckles. "I like this battlefield better."
She smiled, and for the first time, it wasn't bittersweet. It was real. Hopeful.
The next morning, Liam made the call to restructure the company's marketing approach, and Sora met with her mother to negotiate additional investments. Their relationship was still fragile, but now, they wanted to fix it. They wanted to rebuild.
Not just their marriage. But their lives.
