Chapter 7: The Cold War Begins
Morning light streamed through the grand windows of the Carter estate, but to Sora, it felt like she was waking up in a prison.
Her head ached from crying the night before, but she forced herself to get up. Today was the beginning of her life as Mrs. Carter. A title she never wanted. A title that now chained her to a man who once loved her—but now despised her.
She reached for a silk robe and wrapped it around herself before stepping out of the bedroom. The hallway was quiet, almost eerily so.
Good. Maybe I won't have to see him.
But as she descended the marble staircase, she froze.
Liam was already in the dining room, casually sipping his coffee, looking like a king on his throne. His black suit was perfectly tailored, and his expression was unreadable. Beside him sat his mother, Marianna Carter, and across from them—her parents.
Sora's stomach twisted.
"Ah, there she is," Laura announced, her voice falsely sweet. "Sora, dear, you kept us waiting."
Sora straightened her back and walked toward the table, masking her emotions behind a cold expression.
Liam barely spared her a glance. "Late on the first day of our marriage. How fitting."
Sora gritted her teeth. He's really starting already, huh?
Ignoring him, she took a seat.
Joseph Carter cleared his throat. "Since the wedding is over, let's talk business. As agreed, Laura, Carl—your family's investment will help our company recover. In return, our name strengthens your influence."
Marianna smiled. "A perfect partnership, wouldn't you say?"
Laura smirked. "Of course. But let's not forget, we expect results. If in six months, Liam hasn't restored his company, we will take full control."
Sora clenched her fists. This is what it was all about. Power. Business. Control.
Liam finally looked at her then, his gaze sharp and piercing. "Oh, don't worry, Mother-in-law," he said smoothly, leaning back in his chair. "I have every intention of proving myself. And I'm sure my loving wife will be right by my side."
Sora's eyes snapped to him.
He was enjoying this.
He was going to make her life miserable, wasn't he?
She forced a smile, matching his energy. "Of course, dear husband. I wouldn't dream of letting you fail."
Their parents looked pleased.
But beneath the surface, a war had just begun.
