"MALAPIT NA ANG graduation mo. What are your plans after, hija?" Tita Asunta asked.
"Pinag-iisipan ko pa po pero I plan to train in Mama's firm starting now so I can know how the operation works."
"That's a good thing to do, Sera," aniya. "The transfer of your inheritance will take time due to the process, but I think pagkatapos ng board exam mo, tapos na."
"How's your stay here, Migs? Enjoying the view?" I asked.
He nodded and smiled, his eyes shifting from me to Tita Asunta.
"Opo, salamat po, Ate, Tita, hindi n'yo po ako sinusukuan." My heart swelled. Tita smiled softly.
"Para sa 'yo, Migs." I smiled. "Ate and Tita only want what's best for you. Kapag kaya mo na, itutuloy mo ang pag-aaral mo, okay?"
"Opo, Ate." Nakangiti siya pero nabakas kong may gustong sabihin pero nagdadalawang-isip. I looked at him gently, urging him until he spoke. "Ate, si Nanay po, hindi talaga bibisita?"
I froze, hesitant to answer, but I wanted to ease his heart.
"Kinukumusta ka naman niya, Migs. Malay mo, kapag hindi na siya busy, bisitahin tayo rito," I said softly.
He smiled and nodded, though I still see the sadness in his young eyes.
The truth was, Nanay called once to ask for money. Wala nga lang akong naibigay dahil nag-a-adjust pa ako at wala pang natatanggap na pera. I told her that, but she accused me of lying.
I tried explaining, even asked her to visit Miggy, but she grew angry, ignored me, and hung up. I tried reaching out again, but she kept rejecting my calls.

WHEN I HAD the chance to continue reaching my dreams without thinking much about money, pinagbutihan ko. Nagmukmok ako sa pag-aaral. I continued with the last semester of engineering at Sta. Monica University.
I sighed when my head began to ache.
I closed the book, opened my laptop, and leaned back in my chair. It was late, but I stayed in the library to study. Mabuti na lang at 'di maagang nagsasara. Finals were over, but I had to prepare in advance for the upcoming board exam.
I still had requirements to finish before graduation—like the PowerPoint presentation for our thesis and the requirements for the internships I had finished.
I stayed in the hidden part of the library, away from distractions, to concentrate sana pero pagod na pagod naman ang utak ko.
As I stared blankly at my laptop, I remembered Tatay. He would be proud of me for sure, because I was finally graduating. How I wished he could be the one walk with me on stage, na siya iyong magsasabit sa 'kin ng medalya—but he was gone.
I sighed, the heaviness weighing painfully.
"Hey..." The familiar voice echoed.
I rolled my eyes when I saw him carrying three roses and a take-out food.
"Kumain ka na?" He quickly sat beside me.
"Ano'ng ginagawa mo dito?" I asked curiously. "Wala kang pasok?"
"Tapos na," he said, placing the food in front of me. "Kumain ka na, kanina ka pa dito, 'di ba?" he asked.
Instead of answering, I looked at what he brought.
"Paano mo napasok 'yan? Is food even allowed here?" I asked.
"Ako pa ba?" He smiled sheepishly, tucking my hair behind my ear.
My heart thumped when our eyes met. His deep brown eyes gazed at me. From my ear, his hand slid down to my cheek, then to my jaw.
I stayed frozen, staring at him, as his thumb brushed lightly against my lips.
My mouth parted. His eyes darkened, his tongue flicking across his lower lip.
He leaned closer, my heart thumping wildly inside my chest. He tilted his head slightly, but before his lips could reach mine, I turned away.
My heart nearly burst when his lips brushed my cheek instead. He sighed, and I clenched my fists as he buried his face against my shoulder.
His arms wrapped around me instead.
"Miss na miss na kita," he rasped.
I stayed silent, ignoring the burn his warmth gave me.
"You should eat," he said, pulling away. He avoided my gaze and arranged the food in front of me.
I watched him quietly, persistent as ever.
I asked.
"Saan?" he asked.
"It's a library and we're eating?"
"We're hidden," he said. "No cameras here. Si Lando naman nagbabantay sa labas, nagke-kwentuhan pa sila ng librarian."
I pouted, nodding slowly.
"Thank you," I whispered. "Ikaw? Kumain ka na?"
"Hmm, I'm good."
I nodded and began eating while he opened his laptop. He was encoding grades from other blocks.
"How are my grades?" I asked curiously.
He glanced at me, licking his lower lip.
"Great, as usual. You're always great at everything, baby."
My eyes narrowed as I stabbed a piece of meat and ate it.
"Weh? Baka may magic 'yan?" I asked.
"No, I love you, but I'm a fair person." Ngumiti pa siya.
My heart thumped. I swallowed hard and bit my lip.
"I... remembered when you forced me to review your subject. Lahat ng tinanong mo, lumabas sa exam." I raised my brow.
"Hmm, yeah, because we reviewed it."
"Madaya..." I poked his cheek. "Sinadya mong lumabas? Gustong-gusto mo akong pumasa kasi patay na patay ka sa 'kin?"
He stopped, his cheeks turning red, and I grinned.
"Tama ako?"
"Yeah..." He trailed off, his eyes on me. "That's a given—"
"Yeah, what?" My lip twitched.
"You know." His lips protruded. "Lalabas talaga sa exam kasi 'yon ang tinuro ko—"
"Yeah, what, muna? Huh, Engineer?" I teased.
"Serafine..." tawag niya, namumula.
"Oh, come on, nagba-blush ka, Sir?" I hissed, amused.
His face flustered even more. When I tried to touch his cheek, he caught my hand. I gasped when he tugged me closer, our faces nearly touching.
My eyes widened, his brown eyes glistening as our faces hovered inches apart.
"Okay, fine. Yeah, patay na patay. Whatever your term is," he said slowly, his eyes piercing mine. "I love you, okay? And I asked you to review those because that's what I taught in class. Lumabas kasi nga tinuro ko."
"Alright." I shrugged, my smile trembling from our closeness.
He pulled me closer, my breath hitching when his lips brushed the tip of my nose.
"Anyway, I wanna ask you for a date tonight," he whispered.
I swallowed hard.
"A-Ayaw kong makipagdate sa minatamis na gurang," I whispered nervously. His lips parted in shock. I quickly pulled away, blinking rapidly, my cheeks burning.
He eyed me seriously. To look innocent, I avoided his gaze, resumed eating, then glanced at him with a small smile.
"Kain?" I offered.
I spent more time studying.
I yawned, resting my head on the desk.
My lips pursed while watching him closely.
I missed him—I really did. The stubborn part of me wanted him in my life but this wasn't the right time to love again. After everything, I didn't think I could risk it anymore. And there's a far bigger thing than love.
This one would burn me alive.
I wanted to be an Engineer. I wanted to manage my own firm. I wanted to make Miggy proud, to give him a better future.
Nothing was more important than my brother. For him, I fought for my future. I can't be distracted. I can't be hurt again.
"Titig pa, kiss kita d'yan," he said when he noticed me looking. He turned to look at me gently, amusement in his eyes.
"Feeling!" I smacked his shoulder. He laughed.
"What is it? Hmm? You wanna go home?" he asked, reaching for my hair and stroking it as he tucked some strands behind my ear.
"No..." I yawned. "I was just a bit sleepy."
"Then sleep," he said.
"Can you wake me up after thirty minutes? I have to finish my PowerPoint," I asked.
"Alright, sleep," he said. "I'll check your report too while you're asleep."
"Hmm? May ginagawa ka, 'di ba? Kaya ko naman—"
"Sshh, sleep. I'm done with this. Final revisions na lang ang kailangan dito, 'di ba? I'll take care of it," he said.
I nodded weakly, my eyes growing heavy.
His phone rang. I glanced at it and froze when I saw the name.
Engr. Tan calling...
We looked at each other. His lips parted, ready to speak.
I sighed, closed my eyes tightly, and turned my head toward the wall.
The next days grew harder. While reviewing, I had to start work on my inheritance, which meant going to our firm and being introduced.
I was also taking care of Miggy and started to train and study how the azucarera Mama left me was being managed. Tita helped, but she had her own responsibilities, so I had to learn on my own.
I had friends here but more like mga nakakasama ko lang sa block. I kept a low profile. I just wanted to finish this semester peacefully.
However, sa ganda kong 'to, 'di talaga maiwasan iyong matitipuhan at aamin na may gusto sa akin.
"I like you, Sera."
I froze in the middle of the quadrangle, staring at my classmate in front of me.
It was Christian Alfonso, the dean's grandson. Almost my age, pero nagtatrabaho na. Nagma-Masteral siya sa Sta Monica University. I met him on the first day of enrollment this semester, and he'd shown interest since then.
I had nothing against it, knowing he wasn't serious before. But now... I wasn't so sure.
"I..." I didn't know what to say.
Gulantang pa rin ako at kumpleto ang set up. May bulaklak pa at balloons! May tumutugtog pa ng gitara!
"Sagutin mo na si Sir, Sera!" they squealed.
"Thank you," I murmured. "N-Nakakagulat naman po, Sir. Hindi naman kailangang—"
"It's Chris for you, Sera, right? I ain't working here, and don't tell me not to surprise you, because a woman like you deserved things like this."
The crowd squealed louder. I was overwhelmed, but definitely not ready to commit again.
"Chris..." I murmured, clutching the flowers he gave me tightly.
"Hmm?" He smiled.
"I'm still not ready to commit—"
"I know. I just want a chance with you." He touched my hand.
My gaze dropped to his touch, my heart racing nervously.
The crowd squealed again, excitedly, probably thinking something's already happening. I lifted my eyes from Christian to the crowd and immediately met Vioxx's gaze from afar.
Mas sumikip ang pakiramdam ko.
He looked serious, his dark eyes fixed on Christian, then on our hands together. His jaw clenched.
"Sana naman hayaan mo akong ilabas ka para kumain?" Chris smiled. The crowd cheered, pulling my attention away from Vioxx.
"Go, Sera! Ang haba ng hair mo!" Tilian nila kaya naguluhan ako't gusto na lang umalis, to do that, I need to stop this commotion.
"U-Uhm, okay." I smiled at Chris.
We started with the in-house reviews for the upcoming board exam.
So... it's really true.
I felt relieved that when I read about the people involved in the crime, and my Tatay wasn't one of them. It was clearly stated that they paid him to drive without telling him their plans, how he was blackmailed to hide what he saw, and that he was innocent.
With that article was an interview with the Mirandas—specifically, Vioxx, who's wearing a formal suit at a press conference.
It happened yesterday. Kaya pala walang paramdam.
I quickly exited the article and watched him place an iced coffee and a donut in front of me.
"Nandito ka? 'Di ba nasa Manila ka?" I asked.
"Can't I get at least a hi?" marahang tanong niya pero nabakas ko ang pagod sa mga mata niya.
I blinked, watching him lean back in his chair, exhausted.
"Ayos ka lang?"
"Hmm, yeah. Just a bit tired," he murmured.
"Eh, hakit ka pa pumunta dito?" I asked.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know you didn't wanna see my face again," he whispered, closing his eyes.
"No!" I exclaimed. "I mean, wala nang klase? Busy ka sa firm n'yo, at alam kong pagod ka."
"I don't work in that firm anymore. I just had to do that press conference and fix some things. I drove hours to see you, but I guess I'm the only one who likes it," he murmured, tunog nagtatampo pa.
Na-guilty tuloy ako.
"Vioxx..."
"Studying again?" aniya na 'di na pinagtuunan iyon. Sumulyap siya sa mga libro sa lamesa.
"Hmm." I nodded. "Alam mo, magpahinga ka na. Pagod ka na."
He sighed, then gently reached for my hand, stroking it with his fingers.
"I'm sorry to ask you but can I... have a hug?" his tone sounded like he needed it badly.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Bakit?"
"I'm... just so tired. Tired of everything," he murmured.
Sumikip ang dibdib ko. Unti-unti'y niyakap ko siya. He buried his face against my neck, my heart racing as he clung to me, breathing deeply.
"What's the matter?" I asked softly.
"I just want you to hold me," he whispered, hugging me tighter. "K-Kahit saglit lang."
My heart swelled. I let him hold me until he calmed down, then, like nothing happened, he smiled and started joking again to lighten the mood.
"Review the notes I gave you last time. Naka-summarize sa table 'yong important terms. That's what came out last boards, and they might recycle the questions."
I nodded.
"Answer this," he said, handing me a questionnaire he prepared.
"Thanks." I bowed my head to answer the sample questions but my loose hair fell across my cheek. I brushed it away, but it kept falling.
I sighed, gathering my hair to fix it again pero natigilan nang maramdaman ang kamay ni Vioxx sa buhok ko.
I glanced at him. He touched my head, combing my hair gently with his fingers. I blinked, feeling his gentle touch as he lifted my hair to tie it in a ponytail.
"There, better?"
Tumango ako at nagpasalamat.
"I want a chance, too, Serafine..." he whispered. I felt my heart jump.
"A-Ano'ng chance? Para saan?"
"You gave that boy his chance. Give me mine, too," he pleaded. "Please, be fair to me, baby. I want a chance with you, too. Please."
˚ˋঌ˖˚ˋঌ˖˚ˋঌ˖
"CONGRATULATIONS, SERA!"
Tita Asunta was there, together with Miggy and Marco. Marco smiled at me, offering his arm. I chuckled and hugged my cousin while Tita took photos of us, both wearing our togas.
I smiled at the camera, lifting my medal proudly.
"I'm so proud of the two of you! Marco, Sera..." she said warmly.
Her eyes glistened with tears. I hugged her, and she embraced me tightly in return.
"Maraming salamat, Tita..." I whispered.
"Anything for you, Sera. Your mother and father must be very proud of you," she whispered back.
I turned and my heart softened instantly at the sight of Miggy, smiling through tears.
"Migs..." I immediately knelt to cup his face. "Graduate na ang ate."
"P-Proud po ako sa 'yo, Ate." My eyes swelled at his words. "Congrats, Ate ko. I love you."
I gasped and hugged him tightly. We cried. I held him close before pulling back to caress his cheek.
"Nagtapos ako para sa 'yo, Migs;" I smiled. "Promise ni Ate na hinding-hindi kita pababayaan."
"I love you, Ate. Maraming salamat kasi hindi mo ako s-sinukuan." He sobbed.
I bit my lip, quickly removed my medal, and placed it around his neck. His eyes widened in awe, and hope accompanied by pride sparked in his eyes.
"This medal is for you, Migs. I know and believe that someday, ikaw naman ang pupunta sa stage kapag nakapagtapos ka na, at matutupad mo ang lahat ng pangarap mo," I said, caressing his cheek.
"P-Proud ako sa 'yo, Ate. Si Tatay din po," he whispered.
I nodded and kissed him repeatedly on the cheek.
"Congrats..." When he appeared in front of me, my heart swelled.
Vioxx Ephraim Miranda looked dashing in his black dress shirt and brown trousers. He was holding a bouquet of red roses as he walked closer, a genuine smile on his lips.
I heard commotion nearby, noticing the Engineer walking toward me.
"Hi, Kuya!" Miggy's cheerful voice rang out.
"Hi, Migs!" Vioxx smirked and offered his hand. "Apir kay Kuya!"
I smiled as my jolly brother high-fived him.
"Congrats," Vioxx said, lifting his gaze back to me with a smile. "For you."
My heart thumped, and I caught the surprised gasps of people around us. Kumalat ang pula sa mukha ko.
"Y-You're my instructor, Rai!" I hissed quietly, glaring at him.
He chuckled, placing the bouquet in my hand.
"Well, baby, not anymore." He smirked.
My cheeks burned. I bit the inside of my cheeks as Vioxx grinned.
"Ate, doon muna ako kay Kuya Marco," Miggy suddenly said, letting go of my hand.
"Migs—"
"Bye, 'Te! Go, Kuya!" he cheered and ran off. Naiwan tuloy kami ni Vioxx.
Nagkatinginan kami. He looked amused and even tilted his head.
"So..."
"Shit..." I cursed under my breath.
Mukhang pinagkakaisahan pa 'ko nitong dalawa, ah?
"Bad mouth we got there, hmm..." Vioxx teased, slipping his arm around my waist.
My eyes widened when I noticed other faculty members watching us.
"Crush na crush ka ni Engineer, Miss Mendez!" one professor teased.
My cheeks burned hotter. I pushed Vioxx away, but he only tightened his hold.
"Well, I can make a move now?" He grinned foolishly.
The teasing continued, and I grew more embarrassed by Vioxx's antics.
I was clutching the bouquet he gave me while he was leading me outside the graduation hall to talk. I gave in, especially since he hadn't been overly persistent during my last semester. He respected my time to focus on my studies.
"What?" I asked, still smiling as we reached a quiet spot away from the crowd.
Napatingin tuloy ako sa langit at nangiti. It was a pretty sight to see. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange.
"Sera..."
"Hmm?" I looked at him and noticed he looked quite fidgety.
Kumunot ang noo ko. He cleared his throat but he couldn't look at me. Tila kinakabahan.
"Hey, what's the matter?" I asked softly.
He closed his eyes again.
"Vioxx..." I whispered, clutching the bouquet tighter and holding his arm. "Calm down. What is it?"
He licked his lips, ran his fingers through his hair in frustration, then sighed and opened his eyes.
"You know I love you, right?" he blurted out.
My heart raced. I didn't know why but I felt like something would happen.
"Hmm? Bakit?"
He held my gaze.
"I love you, Sera," he breathed. "And I just want to say I am so proud of you—so proud. I admire your courage, your hope, and the love you have for your family."
I stared at him, seeing the sincerity in his eyes.
"I love you, Sera. I do," he whispered. "And it frustrates me every time I wake up and don't have you."
"Vioxx..."
"I want to prove my love to you," he whispered. "I know I'm asking too much but... please, baby, let's get married."
I gasped, my heartbeat pounding faster.
"What..." I shook my head in panic, tila lalabas na ang puso sa dibdib. "Y-You know I still can't trust you—"
"I will do everything," he whispered, his bloodshot eyes locked on mine. "I know I haven't proven anything to you. I am no one. My family disowned me. I have nothing—but I'm building my own. I-I started a small company. It isn't big yet, but I promise it will grow. I'll do my best to provide for us—"
"Hindi mo ako naiintindihan," I muttered. "Alam mo naman ang nangyari sa atin, 'di ba? I just can't..." 'Di ko mabuo ang mga salita.
"Please..." he begged.
My eyes widened when he pulled a velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a diamond ring.
"Please," he said, gripping my other hand tightly. "G-Give me a chance."
I was speechless, frozen—especially when he knelt before me.
"Vioxx..." I shook my head repeatedly.
"I have nothing... but I will work hard to give you everything."
My tears fell. My heart pounded painfully, torn between fear and sorrow. I have a lot in mind but I know this time, my answer is certain.
"Vioxx," I whispered.
"P-Please?" Kumawala ang mga luha niya. "I-I can do everything if you're beside me."
I shook my head, wiping my tears harshly.
"I-I'm sorry..." I murmured, watching how his shoulders fell. "I-I'm not ready for this. I'm not ready for you." I shook my head. "M-Marami pa akong pangarap... ayokong masira ulit ang mga 'yon dahil sa 'yo."
Pain etched in his expression.
"A-Am I not included in your dreams?"
I was sobbing as I stepped back and shook my head.
"S-Sorry," I whispered. "I-I just... I just don't think I need you in this life. I don't... I can't marry you."
His tears fell harder. He lowered his head. I quickly walked away, brushing my tears away harshly.
I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, Rai.
Christian introduced me to her.
"I know you like Serafine, Mom," Christian said with a smile.
"Congrats, Sera." He smiled, offering me flowers.
"Salamat." I smiled and accepted it. Nagkatitigan kami. "Kailangan ko na kasing—"
Halos mapaatras ako nang bigla niyang iangat ang baba ko at halikan ako.
Sa gulat, naitulak ko siya.
"W-What are you doing?" I gasped.
"Sorry, your lips are just irresistible," he said.
My heart hammered painfully.
"Don't you like it? I like you, Sera. Kung ako sa 'yo, sagutin mo na ako—"
"Don't kiss me again, understood? I didn't give you permission, and I don't like you that way, ilang beses ko nang nasabi 'yan sa 'yo." I couldn't help it anymore. Prinangka ko na. "I respect you, Christian, so I am asking you to respect me and my decisions, too."
His mouth parted, realization dawning in his expression.
"I-I'm sorry, I just got carried away—"
Congrats!" He smiled brightly when he saw me.
"Thanks!" I looked around. "'Yong boss mo?"
"Si Engineer?" he asked, and I quickly nodded.
"Nandiyan siya, 'di ba? Pasabi naman mag-usap kami saglit."
"Ay, sorry, Ma'am. Kakaalis lang ni Engineer."
"Huh? Saan?" I tightened my grip on the bouquet.
"Babalik pong Manila."
"May sinabi ba kung kailan babalik?" I asked. He shook his head and shrugged.
"Walang sinabi, Ma'am."
"Alright, salamat. Maghihintay na lang ako," I whispered, smiling faintly as I stared at the sunset—the sky slowly turning bright orange now, like the fire dancing in the night.
I waited, my heart in pieces but I didn't know it would also be the last time I'd see him.
