When you thought things were getting better...
I was in literal hell. I wasn't sick anymore, and winter break was over. That on it's own wasn't bad. No, the fact that Leo had gotten sick again was what was bad. On top of that, a certain devil was waiting for me just outside the doors. I was slightly regretting not coming to school with Artie as I walked up to the doors. Rosalie smirked, tripping me. I had expected her to do something like that, but I still landed on my face. I groaned in pain, rubbing my nose. I moved to get up, but she pushed me down. "Where's your little boyfriend?" She asked.
I winced, "He's not my boyfriend, he's my best friend. He's sick." I said, moving to get back up. She shoved me down again. A small circle of kids formed around us.
"Aw, so you're all alone again today?" Rosalie said.
"Yeah, I am." I said, standing back up. She went to push me down again, but this time, I just stumbled back a little.
"Well, that's how you should be anyways. I mean, I don't understand how he could like you when your own parents didn't." Rosalie said. "And Mr.Kirkland too. He's way too nice to you."
"My mom liked me." I said, stepping forward to try and get inside. She, of course, just stepped in front of me.
"And she's dead. So, no one likes you now, huh?" Rosalie smiled. She almost looked sweet and innocent.
"Shut up." I mumbled, trying to get around her. She just moved to block my path again.
"Your dad left you, then your mom died. And still, no one wants you around. Leo is probably just being nice. He'll realize soon enough that you're just not someone to hang around. He'll switch to hanging out with the cool kids soon enough, then you'll be all alone again."
"I said shut up already Rosalie." I said, trying to step around her again. She, once more, blocked my path. Other kids had made a circle around us, so there was no way I could get away. I was basically trapped.
"Why? I thought you liked people who told the truth. That's all I'm doing right now. I'm telling the truth." Rosalie said. "You're alone. You've basically always been alone. You're going to keep being alone. You live alone. You're going to die alone with no one who'll cry for you."
I balled up my fists, glaring at her. I could feel myself shaking. I didn't know why this time what she was saying was getting to me so badly. It was the same stuff she had said for a long time. But, this time, for some reason, it was really getting under my skin. She kept going, saying all the same things she always did. How I was alone. How no one liked me. How I should just leave and never come back. I wanted to. I really did. I wanted to just run. Run as fast as I could for as long as I could. I wanted to just pick a direction and go. And, wherever I collapsed, that's where I would stay.
But, I was surrounded by kids. It was almost like they were forming a wall. A few other kids had joined in, going along with what Rosalie was saying. More and more of them started joining in, repeating what she said until it was a quiet chorus of hate. I wondered how many of the kids even knew me. I wondered how many of them even cared to know why I was hated. My name. My story. How I felt. What I thought. I doubted any of them did. I looked around the circle at their faces. Some were in the grades above us, so I knew they didn't know me. Even the big kids would bully someone they didn't know if enough other kids joined in. So much for them being more mature than us.
And still, standing in front of me, smirking with her same old smile, was Rosalie, fueling the flames of the fire with more and more taunting words to be repeated. I clenched my fists even tighter. She noticed, but she knew I wouldn't hit her. I had only hit her once. But, that's just what she thought. She just thought I wouldn't hit her. She was wrong, very very wrong. I moved forward again, like I was trying to step around her. Once again, she moved in front of me to block my way, and I did it. I swung my fist and connected with her nose. In just a few seconds, there was blood leaking out of it, like I had turned on a faucet. Rosalie was holding her face and crying, but I didn't care. I didn't even feel bad. I even took another swing, hitting her cheek this time, before turning on my heels and running, breaking out of the crowd. They parted, looks of shock painted on their faces.
I didn't care. I just ran as fast as I could, out of the school yard. I turned right and kept running. I didn't know where I was planning to go. Anywhere really. If I could have, I would have ran right out of our dimension. Into a better one. One where maybe, I could have been a normal, happy kid. Where maybe, Rosalie and I were still friends. One where she hadn't changed and neither had I. Where my dad hadn't left, and my mom hadn't died.
I ran faster, snow crunching under my boots. If I couldn't go to a dimension where nothing had changed in the past, maybe, if I ran fast enough, I could go to the future like in the comics. A future where I was happy. Where I had friends. Where I had a real family. Artie and Al were great, yeah. Better than I thought they were going to be when I had first been adopted, but they weren't really a family. I wanted a mom. I wanted a sibling. I wanted to be like the families on tv, or the ones that seemingly every other kid had. Just like Leo was a great friend, but I was still alone most of the time. He couldn't always be around for me. He couldn't always have my back.
I started running even faster, my heart pounding in my ears. I wondered what was going on back at the school. Rosalie was probably still crying in the nurse's office. She was probably making the story sound like she hadn't done anything. Like I had punched her unprovoked. And people were probably believing her. Even Arite was probably believing her. I was probably in a lot of trouble. Suspended. Expelled. I was honestly fine with either. I didn't care anymore. That is, if I had ever cared in the first place. I couldn't remember a time where I did care if there was one.
My legs were starting to ache, but I kept running. I knew I'd have to stop soon, my breath was starting to hitch and I was wheezing. But, I didn't want to stop. I wanted to go until I collapsed. I didn't care where I ended out, I could end up miles and miles out of town, and I'd be fine with it. I could never find my way back to Artie's and I'd still be fine. I kept myself going, not stopping. I just kept running and running, watching my breath float up in front of my face. My eyes started to blur, but I still kept going until I tripped. That's when I was done. I tried to get back up and start running again, but my legs just wouldn't carry me anymore and I fell down on my face.
That's how I stayed a while too. Laying face down in the snow, tears streaming down my face, probably freezing to it. I couldn't hear anyone else around, or any traffic. I might have actually run right out of town. After a while, I heard the sound of crunching snow. I figured it was Arite come to get me. I looked up to see a hand extended to me and I met with brown eyes and messy black hair and a boy that looked about my age.
"You okay?" He asked. I shook my head.
"Do I look okay?"
"No, you look like crap." He answered, keeping his hand reached out for me. I slowly took it, letting him pull me up.
"Feel as bad as I look." I said, nearly falling back down.
The boy frowned, "...Why don't you come over to my house? It's cold out here anyways..."
Now, logic said that I shouldn't go with the weird boy that just showed up out of nowhere. Logic said that I should remember stranger danger. Logic said that this boy could be working with a psycho, or that he was a psycho himself. But, the fact that I could barely feel any part of my body at the moment said that I was going with him. I nodded, and followed him as he started to walk.
