"Please never let me mix my alcohol ever again." Madi groans, complaining about the same thing since we've been at school. We were currently at lunch and she wore sunglasses to hide the fact that she wasn't wearing any makeup and also, her eyes were incredibly bloodshot.
"You were a lost cause last night." I laugh, drinking water from my water bottle. I look over to my brother outside sitting down at a table, a cigarette in his lips as he read from a book, probably to save his ass from not studying.
People's History of the United States.
Ah, history. This should be fun for him.
I let Madi sleep on the table for the rest of lunch and letting myself doze off. Last night was fun I guess. I didn't really have a lot of fun because I didn't drink but I didn't mind it. After Four had left I didn't see him the rest of the night, it's like he had disappeared completely. Speaking of, I look towards the entrance of the cafeteria to see Thomas and Four both come in, talking about something.
Four looks around, tucking a few stray hairs in his bandana, something he wore much of along with black shirts and black skinny jeans. He kept the earring in from last night also, and I had to admit that he looked pretty hot.
What am I even saying? Stop it.
He must notice that I'm staring at him with my cheek rested against my palm but I quickly look away, hoping he didn't see me but that all goes to shit when he slumps down in one of the chairs at our table. "This seat taken?"
"Would you care if it was? You already took it." I reply, sitting up straight. He shrugs and plays with some keys. "Are you lost, Five?"
"Not really, Jo." He retorts, his lips showing a mocking smirk signaling that he too can annoy me and twice as much as I could ever annoy him.
"What are you doing?"
"Well, I just wanted to grab some coffee." He says making me remember last night and how I said it was okay to go get some.
"Well, I don't think that the lounge area is still serving coffee—"
"Yeah, no I meant we could go get some. I know there's a Starbucks around. Although I'm not very fond of Starbucks especially since I got kicked out for giving them different names every time I got coffee." He rambles on making me stop him.
"It's only twelve, we can't leave." I state.
He lifts up his keys. "Says who?" A smirk finding its way to his lips once again.
"Yeah, I don't think I feel like skipping today. Thank you though."
"Have you never skipped class? It's really not a big deal, just tell drinky over here to give you the work later."
"Drinky?" I raise an eyebrow making him wave the keys at me. I sigh. I didn't want to skip school, but then I also have English next with this teacher who's a bitch to me for no reason. Could be her menopause.
I decide against waking Madi up, not that I could've to begin with since she's knocked out cold. So I quietly stand up and walk away with Four who leads the way.
We went through the locker rooms and walked through swim class. It was kind of cold outside so I'm at least glad I won't be making it today. Once out into the parking lot, Four walks ahead to find his car. It's surprisingly not hard to get out of school, they should definitely think about better security methods.
"What kind of car is this?" I say, looking back to the little space there was where the backseat was supposed to be. I knew it was a Mercedes for it's obvious Logo, also because my father was obsessed with the brand and has about three.
"This is a 1969 Mercedes. It's a classic as you can see, I'd bring down the roof but I don't want to mess with your hair." He says in a mocking tone but I only look to him with a daring smile.
"It's just hair." I say. He looks to me before smiling and clicking a button on the dashboard next to the rest of the buttons. All around, the roof starts to come down and hides behind a small compartment in the back. This allowed me to feel the chilly wind. The clouds were grey but this was always my favorite weather.
I only thank my parents for not moving us to LA, the air there would be smelling like burnt tires and nasty street food. Besides, you wouldn't get this in LA, not with all that traffic.
I grin, sticking my arms up and letting the wind pull them back with its force. "Having fun?" He chuckles but I ignore him. I loved nature, and I love Four's car.
After a while, and the motion of the car not letting me fall asleep, we arrive at a place called Molinari's a small yet indie looking coffee shop. Four rolls up the roof making me pout causing him to laugh.
"I don't want my stereo to get robbed, it's an original." He says and gets out of the car making me follow. I leave my backpack in the car before we both walk inside the coffee shop. The place looked edgy yet with a touch of Napa as I look up to the ceiling and notice a skylight which was adored by philodendron plants that cascaded down. I have never been here before, I hope it's good.
I hear as Four greets the male barista as I look at the brick wall with books and vinyls. The whole place looks so aesthetically pleasing and I honestly feel relaxed just being here. I feel that even though if the coffee is shit, I'd still find myself coming here.
"They have this new wine infused coffee," Four says, not hiding his astonishment. Of course they do, it's Napa the valley for wine makers and vineyards. I raise my eyebrows in fake shock.
"Sounds gross?" I say with a laugh making Four shrug.
"I'm getting it, what would you like?"
"I'll have a cappuccino americano, please." I say to the barista making him nod. As I'm walking away to look for a table, I hear the barista ask for his name.
"Harry." Four says making me roll my eyes, remembering how he told me a few minutes ago that he got kicked out of Starbucks for giving them fake names.
Well he better not get us kicked out of here because even then, I'd still continue to come back. This place is absolutely beautiful.
"So tell me," I start, watching as he placed his phone down on the table and sits down on the chair, his ink peering out from under his black shirt but he fixes his collar and it hides again. "What are you doing in California?"
He takes a deep sigh and hums. "Am I being interrogated?" He says making me laugh and take his sunglasses that he was wearing in the car.
He had them dangling on his shirt before I put them on. "Sir, you are being interrogated. Anything you say can and will be used against you." I say, pretending to be a cop.
I don't know why I was being so comfortable with him now, maybe it was because he wasn't like the guys who go after me with one intention in mind. He actually took care of me and made me feel safe. I felt comfortable with him now that I know he hasn't scared off easily, despite me trying to make him.
"I'd like to speak to my lawyer," he says making me slam my hand against the table softly and he jumps, obviously playing along.
"Answer the question, sir!"
"I came here last year from London." He says making me pretend like I'm writing something down in my imaginary notepad.
"How come you weren't at school last year then?"
"Well, in London usually what you call junior year here is our last year. So basically, I finished secondary school over there but since I came here I had to do one last year, which if you ask me sucks. I didn't do it last year because I was taking a gap year. I worked for that time." He says making me nod. "Kind of stupid for a nineteen year old to still be in high school just because I graduated at seventeen."
"You're nineteen?" I ask, my eyebrows raising. He nods. "Well this is awkward."
"Why? How old are you?" I kind of feel like I shouldn't say. I bite down on my lip in nervousness. Four waits for my answer.
"I'm seventeen," I purse my lips and he sits back and hums. "I'm only seventeen for one more month though." I shrug, trying to play it out as if it wasn't a huge deal.
"You had me thinking it was lower," Four chuckles. "But I mean, we're not doing anything illegal here are we? I mean, maybe you are with the whole underage drinking." He jokes and I roll my eyes. "Carry on with the questions."
Well, he took that surprisingly well. "Where did you work?" I ask, playing with his sunglasses on my face.
"I work at a boxing club," he says. Of course he does. "It's easy money, all I do is change the punching bags, and sometimes train newcomers. I'm also supposed to be washing the ring but I leave that to a coworker, just because he's annoying." He says making me laugh.
"One more question," I say. "Your name?" His eyebrows knit together at this as he sits back on the chair. Maybe I struck a nerve?
"What about it?" He purses his lips, he was a bit more serious now.
"It's nothing bad," I admit. "I'm sorry if it came out rude. I've just never heard anyone be named after a number before."
He nods, there's a glint in his eye but he clears his throat and it goes away. "It's just a name." He shrugs with a faint laugh. I knew there was probably something else he wanted to say but I drop it. He very obviously doesn't want to talk about whatever it was. After the barista calls his fake name, he goes for the coffee's. He got two for him and my cappuccino. "Just in case I don't like the wine infused one." He smiles, his dimples showing.
"Thank you." I say, grabbing my mug.
"Now, it's my turn to be the cop." He says, taking back his sunglasses and putting them on his face.
"Okay," I say. "Shoot."
"Tell me something about yourself that no one else knows." He says, cracking his knuckles.
"Does it have to be true?" I ask with a laugh making him nod. "Um," I think. "Sometimes when I pluck my eyebrows I sneeze." At this, he stares at me as if I've grown a third head making me throw my head back in laughter. "I bet you didn't see that coming."
"You are very weird." He says, drinking his coffee before passing it to me. "You know about wine, tell me how this compares."
"My parents know about wine," I correct. "And how did you know that?" I don't recall ever telling him I come from a family of vintners.
"As if I didn't know you lived on a vineyard. I also see the wine every time I go to the market for groceries. Which by the way, way too overpriced for a locally made wine."
I chuckle. "It's been in the family for years. Things increase their value over time." I admit. I take a sip of Four's coffee before grimacing at the bitter taste. "I might not know about wine, but this is absolutely disgusting." I say.
"Yeah I'm not so fond of it." He laughs. "Last question," he says making me nod. "How do you feel about being friends?"
"Like I don't have a choice?" I laugh making him do so as well.
"Glad we established that." He smirks.
