The Day Everything Changed
"Shhh, it's ok, it's ok," Louis cooed. "He's just a jerk face, that's all." I laugh and then shove ice cream in my mouth. Louis came right after I called and we are ice cream and talked. I felt tears pooling in my eyes but I firmly said to myself I will NOT cry over a boy. That will be something I do NOT cry about.
"Yeah, he could've had all this!" I joke, trying to cover up my sadness. "I mean, I really thought that this would last. But it's better than the one before him. Jacob, the one before, he broke up with me on Valentine's Day. So, do you have a girlfriend? Or do you like anyone?"
Suddenly, he looked nervous. "No, I don't have a girlfriend. I want one though. And I do like someone, but I am not going to tell you, you blabber mouth," he teased. I look offended. "Oh, come on. You know it's true. Remember in high school when I told you how I liked Blair Smith? And the next day you told everyone?"
"Yeah well you deserved it. Remember that day, you teased me for wearing a Nirvana shirt?" He rolled his eyes and we moved on to the next topic. About a half hour later, I heard the doorbell ring. I stand up to answer the door.
"No!" Louis jumps up. "I'll get it! But you need to close your eyes." Cautiously, I do what he says. A few minutes later, he says "Ok you can open now." I open my eyes to see my bestest friends in the world!
"Jordan! Samantha!" I cry, giving each of them a big hug. "Wha-? I thought that y'all were out of town!"
"Yeah," states Sam. "Louis invited us. He said that you went through a harsh break up." She gazed at him lovingly.
"Alright," growled Jordan. "Where does Niall live? His face has an appointment with my fist." I laugh. This is why we are friends.
"Hey!" Louis suddenly exclaimed. "Why don't I invite over Liam and Harry! It can be a party!" We all agree and Liam and Harry are here in under 20 minutes. We made popcorn, cookies, and lots of other yummy stuff. Harry keeps flirting with me, Jordan is all over Liam, and Sam kept following Louis around like a lost puppy. She was acting desperate. When I noticed the popcorn was running low, I dragged Lou into the kitchen to help me make more. But what I really wanted to talk to him. Samantha immediately jumped up and offered to him once she Louis leaving, but he waved her away.
Once we were alone, Louis said "Ok, spill. Something is on your mind and not just popcorn."
"It's Samantha," I confess. "Can't you tell? She's all over you." He smiles as if I just said something funny. "What?"
"Is someone jelly?" He asks, cheekily.
I scoff. "No, it's just that when it comes to guys, she gets obsessed and never leaves you alone. Are you sure you want her to stalk you?"
"I'm used to it, remember? Famous person right here?" I just sigh. Just then, my phone starts ringing. It's the hospital.
"Hello?"
"Is this Lydia Henninger? Sister of Skye Louise Henninger?"
"Yes, this is she."
"Your sister is getting worse. The doctors don't know why! I am sorry to say that she is dying." I hang up.
"Get in the car."
"What? Why?"
"Just do it. Jordan, come on!" Samantha looked up as we came into the living room.
"Where are you going?" She asked, petting Phoenix behind the ears.
"No where you should be concerned about," I say coldly. Sam looks hurt but I ignore her. Less than 15 minutes later, we are at the hospital with Skye. Her face lights up when she see us.
"Jordan!"
"Hey, Skyesters," Jordan says sadly. She and Skye were very close. Almost sisters. We stayed and talked with her. Louis was awkwardly standing in the corner. Then her heart rate started to go down.
"Lydia," she gasps, grasping my hand. "I love you. And when I go, don't hurt yourself. A-and beware the one you call a friend." While I puzzled over that, she and Jordan talked. Then she took one last breath and lay still. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes. Then they started trickling down my cheeks. Jordan stared in shock. She had never seen me cry and Skye just passed away.
When we got home, Sam and Harry had already left. Liam, being the caring one he is, stayed to hear the news. But I didn't stay. I ran up to my room and locked the door. That was when I was full on sobbing. My only relative, dead. I was all alone. No, I tell myself fiercely, You have Louis and Jordan and Liam and Harry. Plus Phoenix needs you. You are not alone.
"Lydia?" Someone is knocking on the door.
"Go away," I croak. I don't want to be around anybody right now. No response. I crawl onto my bed, kicking off my shoes. I curl up into a ball and cry myself to sleep.
