Kabanata 2

"DO you know the myth about the Fall of Icarus?" Napaayos ako ng upo when I heard my Mom spoke, sumulyap ako sa kanya at umiling.

"No, Mama," I answered.

She smiled, her soft gaze made me feel peaceful and happy.

"You wanna hear it?" She asked me excitedly. "These days, anak, 'yon na ang gusto ko."

"Yes!" I chuckled. "How about Orpheus and Eurydice, Mom?"

"Of course I will always like theirs, too, that's my favorite myth pa rin. However, you can have other favorites, right? Lalo na ngayon at alam mo na, tumatanda..."

Sabay kaming napatawa, inayos ni Mama ang buhok ko papunta sa likod ng tainga ko at ngumiti.

"Hindi ko pa ito nake-kwento sa inyo, how about you call Kuya Macky and Papa Dash?" She asked.

"Sure!" I cheered and stood.

Lumabas ako sa kwarto, my night dress is kinda long kaya inangat ko iyon ng kamay ko at bumaba sa hagdan.

My hair is still falling on my shoulder, mahaba ito at itim na itim kagaya ng kay Mama.

I don't know but I loved my long hair so much, bukod sa tuwid at maganda tignan, naitatali ko pa sa gusto kong ayos.

When I grew up and became a lady, I would let my hair be this long, hindi ko papagupitan.

I found my brother and Dad in our living room, si Papa ay nanunuod ng TV, kaharap ang laptop niya at si Kuya Macky naman ay nanunuod pero miminsa'y nag-uusap silang dalawa.

"Pa, when I finish college, I'd like to train sa airport," I heard my brother say.

"Sure, son. You and your sister will always have a place there, kaya ko pinaghirapan 'yon at inalagaan para sa inyo ng kapatid mo. That will be yours and hers when the time comes." Dad smiled.

"Thanks, Pa. I want to be a pilot like you." I noticed the adoration and amazement in my brother's voice.

"That's good, son. I will support you and Darshana whatever you wanted to be in the future."

Lumapit ako sa kanila, I immediately kissed my father's cheek from the back and it made him jump. My smile widened.

"Princess..." His dark blue–almost black eyes smiled.

"Ako, Dad, I wanted to be a flight attendant!" I said happily. "And I wanted to pursue art, too!"

I caught my brother's gaze and he was pouting. I grinned.

"Where's my kiss, Darsh?" he said coldly kaya natawa ako.

"Ito na! Tatampo!" hagikhik ko at lumapit para halikan din ang pisngi niya.

"What are you doing here, princess? Tapos na kayo mag girl time ni Mama Kaia?" malambing na tanong ni Dad habang pinagmamasdan akong umikot sa sofa para maupo sa may sofa.

"Hmm, oh!" Nanlaki ang mata ko at 'di na natuloy ang pag-upo.

"Mama asked if you'd like to hear a story? Hindi raw ni Mama nake-kwento pa," I said and I saw how Dad closed his laptop and removed his glasses.

"Tara, princess," he said, walang pag-aalinlangang tinigil ang trabaho.

"Yehey!" I cheered happily and glanced at Kuya Macky who's now turning the television off.

"What story, Darsh?" he asked.

"Fall of Icarus," I said. He nodded.

"Alright, come on. Let's go, Marcus," ani Dad at masaya akong kumapit sa braso nilang dalawa habang papaakyat kami sa hagdan patungo sa master's bedroom kung nasaan si Mama nag-aantay.

I feel so loved and special while walking with the two men I loved the most, magkawig na magkahawig ang Kuya at ang Papa kaya natutuwa talaga ako at para silang magkapatid minsan.

We entered the room and saw Mama Kaia fixing the bed sheet, humiwalay ako sa kanila Kuya para pagpapagan ang mga unan at tulungan siya.

"Thank you, Daru." She smiled.

My Dad was hugging my Mom from behind, may binubulong siya kay Mama at narinig kong natawa si Mama at pinalo ang braso niya, naiiling.

"Mamaya na pag-usapan 'yan, may mga bata!" she hissed quietly and Dad laughed, hugging her more from behind.

"Aww, I wished I'd have the love like that..." I sighed heavily and rested my head on my brother's shoulder.

"Silly, you're still just a kid, Daru," Kuya whispered and pinched my nose.

"Oh, come on, Kuya!"

"Anong sabi mo, Daru?" he teased.

"Sabi ko..." Iba na naman ang lumabas sa bibig ko kaya humagalpak pa siya.

"Kuya!" I hissed loudly.

"What's the matter, kids?" natatawang sabi ni Dad.

"Si Kuya!" I pushed his hand away and he laughed more.

"Dad, gusto na raw mag-boyfriend." Biglang sumbong ng Kuya kaya nanlaki ang mata ko at umiling.

"Wala!" I exclaimed, nanliit ang mata sa akin ni Papa at natawa lang si Mama.

"Darshana..."

"I didn't say anything!"

I groaned. He smirked.

"Dad, sabi ni Daru–"

"Kuya!" I exclaimed at the top of my lungs and pulled his hair to stop him, napadaing siya at suminghap ako at halos dambahin na siya para masabubuntan.

"What the..." Dad muttered.

"Bata ka pa kasi, Darshana! Bawal mag-boyfriend kapag bata–"

"Wala akong sinabi! Liar ka!" I groaned. He touched my arm to stop me but I was so annoyed that I kept on pulling his hair.

"Jusko...mga anak mo, Dash Rakiel!" Mama hissed and Kuya kept on laughing.

"Daru, tama na, anak..." Papa called.

"Hindi ko naman kasi sinabi!" I groaned.

"Oo na, hindi na, sorry na..." He laughed.

I hissed at him when I let go of his hair. He slowly pushed me to sit back on the bed, magulo at sabog ang buhok niya. He grinned at me after brushing his hair with his fingers. I scoffed.

"Daru..."

"Papa! Hindi nga kasi!" I said defensively.

"Oo, hindi na...tama na 'yang away na 'yan." He laughed and shook his head. "Pero bawal pa ang boyfriend, Darshana, bata ka pa."

I pouted.

"What?!" I hissed.

"Sorry na," he apologized and smiled.

"Liar ka..." I accused. "Sabi ko lang naman ang cute ni Mama at Papa!"

"Oo na, joke lang, ito naman 'di mabiro," he teased. I rolled my eyes at him and crossed my arms on my chest.

"Darsh..." he muttered.

"Hmp!" I hissed.

"She got your temper, Dash," biglang sabi ni Mama kaya napasulyap kami sa kanya, she's smiling and shaking her head.

"Hindi, ah, I'm a patient man, babe."

"Dash!" She exclaimed, making him laugh.

"Okay, babait na, 'di na kami mang-aasar ni Macky, right, son?" Dad asked at halos mapangiwi kami ni Mama nang mag-apir ang dalawa at nagkampihan.

"At nagkampihan na..." Mom chuckled. Sumulyap siya sa 'kin bago kay Kuya. "Alright, kids, bawal ang mag-away, okay? Magbati na kayo."

"Sorry na..." Kuya said, sumulyap ako sa kanya at ngumuso.

"Anong bibilhin mo sa 'kin bukas?" I raised my brow.

"Alright, may nakita akong bagong art materials, I know you'll like it–"

My eyes brightened.

"Talaga?" I was never this quick to answer.

"Yeah, wala ka pa no'n, eh. I saw it earlier and I will buy you some." He winked. My grin widened.

"OMG! Yes!" I chirped.

"So, bati na tayo?" He smiled and offered his hand.

"Okay!"

He chuckled and leaned back on me and I realized my parents were watching us with lovely smiles.

"I'm really glad you grew up like this." Mama smiled.

"S'yempre, babe, ako ang Papa, eh." Biglang entrada ni Dad. I giggled.

"Kulit mo, Sandejas..." Mom shook her head and rested her head on Dad's shoulder, kinuha ni Dad ang kamay niya at hinalikan bago bumaling sa amin.

"Well, do you kids know about the tale of Icarus and Daedalus?" Mom asked and my brother and I both shook our heads.

"Alright, my favorite story time with Professor Kaia!" Dad chirped, my mother's eyes softened.

"There are a lot of versions for this myth," she started. "Daedalus is a great artisan in Athens, may kasama siyang apprentice named Talus."

I nodded and listened to her.

"Sanay na sana si Daedalus na siya ang pinakamagaling kaya noong may nakaka-appreciate sa galing ng apprentice niyang si Talus, nagalit siya. He was overwhelmed with rage and jealousy and that drove him to push Talus off the rock in Acropolis pero hindi niya napatay, turns out the Goddess, Athena, turned Talus into a bird to save him.

"Daedalus was then charged with murder and tried finding refuge in Crete. Doon siya nakahanap ng trabaho, he worked for King Minos, that's where he had his own family too. Nagkaanak siya, si Icarus."

"Oh, the one in the title," I noted.

"Yes. Daedalus was given a task by King Minos to built a place to contain a minotaur, a monster, but then instead of a simple cage, Daedalus made a very large and complex labyrinth. He is a skilled artisan, right?"

We nodded at her.

"Kaya napakagaling niya. The labyrinth was so complex na kapag nakapasok ka, hindi ka na makakalabas," aniya at mas namangha ako, umayos ng upo at sumandal kay Kuya na sumandal sa head board para makaayos akong lalo.

"A minotaur is a monster kaya ang mga nakatira, walang alam na may itinatagong gano'n si King Minos, it was a secret to the inhabitants of the island and to keep it that way, King Minos locked Daedalus and his son, Icarus in a tall tower to keep them quiet. So, Daedalus thought of ways to escape and the only thing he came up with was the possibility of flying.

"He began collecting feathers from the birds. Then, he built one for him and his son, Icarus. He warned his son to never fly too low because of the sea, baka mabasa ang pakpak at bumigat and also, don't fly too high because the wax from the wings might melt and he'll fall."

"So, babe, he should just fly in the middle?" Dad asked and Mom nodded.

"Yes, babe," she answered. "They must only fly in between because take note, no man has ever learned or tried flying that time except for the Gods. May border between the Gods and humans and humans should never try crossing it. 'Yong mga tao sa isla, sobrang namangha na nakakalipad si Icarus at Daedalus. They were so amazed and envious of what they could do, kasi first time na may nakalipad nang gano'n na tao.

"Daedalus was well aware and stayed in the middle but Icarus, he was so amazed and proud. Nakita niyang naiingit ang mga tao kaya nagpakitang gilas siya, he flew higher than he is supposed to and people were envious. Meanwhile, Daedalus was horrified, he tried shouting for his son but Icarus was so persistent.

"He flew very high hanggang sa makasabay na niya sa paglipad ang mga ibon. He even mocked the Gods, saying na nakakalipad na rin siya. He was so proud and felt like a God but everything has limitations, right?" She glanced at us. We nodded.

"Lahat ng bagay hindi p'wedeng tuloy-tuloy lang. 'Di p'wedeng sobra-sobra at walang limitasyon. Not just because you want more, you will break the rules and do more, ang sobra, nakakasama."

"The Gods saw what Icarus did and because he was too high and the sun directly gazed upon him, the wax melted and he fell."

"Pinipilit kasi..." Kuya Macky muttered, annoyed. "Sinabihan na kasi no'ng Tatay, ang tigas ng ulo."

"Correct ka d'yan..." Dad frowned.

"What happened to Daedalus, Ma?" I asked.

"Well, he couldn't do anything so he just watched how his son fell from the sky." She sighed.

"That's too tragic naman, Mama." I pouted. "Bakit ang mga fave mo i-kwento, tragic?"

She laughed and reached for my cheeks to pinch it.

"No, may happy endings naman, ah? Alam n'yo kung bakit gusto ko i-kwento sa inyo ito? It's because, tragic stories mostly had wonderful lessons in the end." She explained. "Kaya sila naging tragic because something wrong happened, hindi nila nakuha ang magandang ending kasi nagkamali sila at hindi nila kaagad naiayos iyon which for us, listeners and readers to know and understand so we could not be like them."

"Sa bagay, that's karma, babe," ani Dad at ngumuso, pinaglalaruan ang daliri ni Mama. "He tried killing Talus, right? Ang karma niya parang sa anak napunta."

"And Icarus is too ambitious that he's willing to go against the rules and it ended up taking a toll on him," Kuya Macky added.

"Icarus is kinda bobo, nabulag siya sa kakapakitang-gilas, hindi nakinig sa sinabi ng Papa niya," I concluded.

"You got it, my baby," Mama agreed. Napakurap ako.

"Po?" I asked.

"It won't happen, Icarus won't fall if only he listened to his father," she said. "Masyado siyang nabulag at hindi naisip ang limitasyon sa bagay-bagay. I think it's okay to aim for more but at the right pace and time. It's okay to fly high like him but Icarus in the myth is ambitious in a bad way, he tries going against the Gods. He didn't listen. He crossed the border kaya sa huli, napahamak siya."

"Tama," ani Papa. "I think that's the lesson, na we should learn how to listen sa mga isinasabi sa atin. It's okay to aim high but with limitations, it's okay to strived harder pero h'wag sobra na pati ikaw ay mapapasama na. Kaya mga anak, listen if may sinasabi kami ni Mama Kaia kasi it's for you, kasi mahal namin kayo. If you have problems, tell us and we will be open for it and give you an advice as a parent."

"Aww, ang galing na ni Dash-beybe," Mom muttered and Dad immediately grinned, his eyes softening like a cute puppy.

"Really? Am I really learning, teacher?" He smiled at her.

"Hmm,"

"Talaga? Ibig sabihin ba niyan p'wede na nating sundan si Daru–" Mom covered his mouth and my Kuya and I laughed.

The next morning, I was in a good, bright mood.

I sang loudly when I saw his back while I am on the hallway, walking towards my room.

He stopped, nagpamulsa pa pero hindi lumingon.

I smiled, my eyes went on his cute ass and I bit my lip, yakap ang libro ay halos mag-hop na palapit sa kanya.

"Good morning, Chance!" I greeted.

Sinabayan ko siyang maglakad, he glanced at me then looked away after raising his brow.

"Ay, snobber si pogi. Good morning lang, ah? Damot!" I pouted.

"Sinong mas maganda, umaga o ako?" tanong ko pa.

Hindi siya umimik, mabagal ang lakad niya kaya gano'n din ako, yakap pa ang libro at nakasabit sa braso ang hand bag. I pouted.

"Kumusta, Chance? 'Di kita nakita nitong nakaraang linggo, ah?" tanong ko at nakita kong binasa niya ang ibabang labi at tumikhim.

"I'm busy," he answered coldly, when his dimples deepened, I felt my heart dancing.

Ang gwapo-gwapo...

"Oh? Saan? Masters?" I asked. He glanced at me, his dark eyes meeting mine. Muli akong nag-smile.

"Hmm..." He nodded and looked away again.

He's wearing a baby blue dress shirt tucked on his black slacks, the sleeves rolled up to his elbow cleanly, giving me a view of the sexy veins lining his skin, a black watch clasped in his wrist.

I swallowed, liking his fit.

"Sana all damit," I mumbled dazely. He stopped, nilingon niya ako kaya nanlaki ang mata ko.

"What?" I asked, kunwari'y walang alam.

"What did you say?" he asked, his thick brows almost met, nakakanginig ng tuhod ang tingin niya kaya I composed myself and smiled.

"Wala, sabi ko, good morning, ang gwapo mo,"

The crease on his forehead faded, he licked his lip and brushed his hair with his fingers, shaking his head.

"Go to your room, kid," he snapped.

My lips parted.

"I'm not a kid, Chance." I muttered. "Mag-i-eighteen na ako!"

"Ah..." he nodded, mukhang walang pakialam kaya ngumuso ako.

"Kapag eighteen na ako, sinasabi ko sa 'yo," bulong-bulong ko pa.

"Ano ngayon kung mag-i-eighteen ka na?" He glanced at me, slipping his hand on his pocket, he is tall kaya nag-angat ako ng tingin para masalubong ang mata niya.

"Kapag eighteen na ako, 'di ka na maiilang sa akin!" I exclaimed and he suddenly laughed, shaking his head at me.

"Sorry, not interested. Bratty kids aren't my type." He muttered, looking so serious yet his eyes are playful and it's giving him away.

"Uh-huh? And pigs can fly..." I giggled. "Naku, kakainin mo ang sinabi mo, Chance."

He glanced at me skeptically. "I won't. Hindi ako pumapatol sa bata."

"Weh?" I raised my brow, tumitig siya at nakipagtagisan ng tingin. "Weeeh?"

"I won't, Miss," he said pointedly, looking away before walking past me.

"Wait!" I exclaimed. "Wait mo ako!"

Nasabayan ko na siya, ngumisi ako at muling nagsalita.

"Kakainin mo 'yan, Chance. Tignan mo, years from now, sa akin ka naman maghahabol."

"Dream on, Darshana. Dream on." He muttered with a foolish smirk on his lips.

"Dream on talaga!" I exclaimed. "Naku, you'll be on your knees begging me to take you back..."

"Uh-huh..." He laughed like it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard, his eyes playful. "What novel you're reading right now to dream of such a thing, young miss?"

"Ay grabe!" My eyes widened. He was amused.

"Darshana!" he exclaimed angrily. I pouted.

"What?! Hahawak lang, ang damot!" I exclaimed and he sighed, shaking his head.

"Just...don't." He gulped and sighed, tumikhim at naglakad ulit.

"Don't what?" I asked, mas niyakap pa ang libro.

"Don't...touch me," he reminded. My lips protruded more.

"Arte, hawak lang, wala naman akong sakit!" I exclaimed. He shook his head and cleared his throat.

"Huh?" I asked.

He stared at me, his eyes burned and melted my insides. He was so beautiful he was capable of turning my guts inside out, miski ang balun-balunan ko'y ready na mag-bending!

"Between you and the day," he added and my forehead creased.

"Huh?"

"Mas maganda ka sa umaga," he said.

"C-Chance!" I called and he stopped, nakita kong napasulyap sa amin ang iilang estudyante na nasa classroom kaya tumikhim ako at mas lumapit para kami lang ang makarinig.

He was unmoving, nagtungo ako sa kanyang harapan at nakitang nagulat siya pero lumamig bigla ang ekspresyon at parang walang pakialam na.

"Weak ka pala, eh," I said and I saw how confusion filled his eyes.

"What?"

"Crush kita, kung matapang ka, lumaban ka..." His forehead creased more, mas naguguluhan na.

"Labanan mo 'ko, kung crush kita dapat i-crush-back mo rin ako. Bet mo rin dapat ako..." His mouth parted handsomely kaya nagpigil ako ng ngisi at kinagat ang labi ko.

"Luh, weak. Duwag ka naman pala, Kuya, eh," I mocked and while he was stunned, I winked at him and waved cutely.

"Kakainin mo sinabi mo, Chance. You'll beg for me. Itaga mo pa sa dimples mo." I smiled and ran back to my room.
