Chapter 2: The Penalties

#1: Every challenge must come with a worthy penalty.

"So Mayu didn't have her hair down either! Hahaha, talk about being brave!" Jody laughed so loudly.

But of course, those stupid two also laughed just as loudly. Benji sliding on the slide, and Maru swinging on the swing.

Our existence in the playground had completely warded off the children in the neighborhood. One time, there were two kids around first-grade school who came playing around. I was sure after they heard Jody's laughter, I rarely saw them again.

"Mayu, didn't you also want to start being not ordinary with your long hair??? Hahaha!" Benji held his stomach and laughed more. Maru and Jody even fell from the swings to the sandy ground, laughing their tears out.

"Jody didn't wear gym clothes; guess we have some extra free strawberries buns!"

Jody took the money and handed it to Benji and Maru.

That was part of our penalties.

"Oh, hehe, as expected, I became the representative of my new class! Hahaha! No penalties for me okay?" Benji danced with his hands with some weird movements, then continued climbing the stairs of the slide.

"But guess what guys! Maru really hit it home today!" Benji pointed at Maru.

Both I and Jody shifted our gaze towards the handsome boy laughing on the ground.

"Other than the opening ceremony's speech, I finally confessed to Lila-chan, and got rejected! Hooray!!!" Maru raised his hands to the sign of victory.

A breeze just blew by, as if trying to rub more salt into the wound. How tragic a young man's first love!

The three of us didn't ask in detail (despite being real curious). Maru seemed fine on the outside. However, I was sure he was sad and depressed by it. He tried especially hard to get to Marie Curie High because of Lila-chan after all.

"Guys! Hey! I'm not sad, okay? Why are you guys even sad?" Maru spoke up to break the ice frozen by the earlier breeze. And he repeated himself again.

Benji stepped forward and lent Maru a hand helping him stand up.

"Nah! I was just thinking about what I should order from Guddo"

Maru actually looked sad when Benji said so, despite the fact he himself just asked us what was the problem to be sad about. A mystery, indeed.

"Well-said, Benji! Same for me! It's Mayu's penalties! Let's go!" Jody stood up and dragged us all to Guddo bakery.

No uniforms, no books, no pens, just the same playground, the same bakery in the neighborhood. Between us, there lied a secret to our bonds: The Penalties.
