Chapter 6: A Competition
#5: Every challenge must yield a reward that encourages the member's growth.
"Hey, isn't Maru being too busy these days?"
I asked Benji while we were in the playground. I was eating chocolate ice cream, and Benji berry one. I wasn't a fan of ice cream, however, Benji liked ice cream a real lot.
"And Jody isn't around often either, is she? Did she really hang out with that dude?"
Benji replied. It is obvious Benji didn't really understand Peter since he didn't really hang out with us despite years of living together in the same neighborhood. And I didn't understand Peter either. I never had a single proper conversation with him before.
"Not yet, I think. But this playground is about to get real quiet, isn't it?"
"Oh, you know what, Maru is running candidate for student council in our school!" Benji said
Honestly, I was rather surprised. Maru didn't strike me as a reliable and responsible person. Although he can be very clever, studied well, he didn't give off the mature vibe at all.
"Why, all of a sudden?"
"I don't know, probably Maru himself doesn't know either. It's not like him to do it, but in fact, it's really like him to not think things through"
I agreed with Benji. "That guy took up on ten different sports, but never even got better at one. Now he rarely hangs out with us! Haizz"
Benji nodded. He seemed to hold back on something. We continued eating ice cream and swinging on the swing. Our playground had never been this deserted.
"Eh? You guys are here?"
Now, Maru appeared, with a classmate, it seemed like.
"Maru! Kayn!" Benji called out and waved to both of them. Benji told them that they both were running candidates for the same position in the student council. Kayn was actually an okay guy.
Both of them walked to us with their bikes.
"Yo!"
"Yo!"
"Hey!"
After that, there came an awkward silence. The wind blew past us. The sun was setting.
"Hey, guys!" Maru said and I saw him waving the classmate. They parted ways then Maru headed to us.
Maru parked his bike by the slide and said.
"You guys don't have homework? Or anything?"
I shook my head. The first few days of high school were going slowly like a snail. And Benji shook his head. Although I bet this guy studied until midnight or something every day.
"Hehe, I'm running for Student Council Advisor position! Hehe! You look at me succeed, you polar bears! And you're eating ice cream again? Don't you look fat, Mayu?" Maru said in a really arrogant voice. I always always hated that part of him.
"Stop your stupid attitude!" I said with a straight face to him.
"Hey, that's harsh, Mayu!"
Maru sat down on the stairs of the slide next to us. He's in uniform, however, his shirt wasn't cleanly tucked in, and his tie was loosely tied. He looked quite beat up, despite not having any bruises. Maru didn't look quite like Maru.
I leaned towards Benji and asked him what happened to Maru. Benji looked away at Maru, and all he did after that was just shaking his head and said he didn't know for sure.
"Do you guys want to do a Competition this time, instead of a normal Challenge?" Maru's eyes brightly shined. He walked in front of us and said.
"Whoever has a boyfriend, girlfriend first will win! Expired by the end of the winter holiday!"
"But we have rule number 5, "Every challenge must yield a reward that encourages the member's growth". I don't see how I can grow as a person has anything to do with having a boyfriend!" I said, in opposition to the idea.
"Why not? I will win for sure, Mister Arrogant Gentleman by the slide there!" Out of nowhere, Jody appeared with her new lobby hairstyle, and a bold smile, which suited her real well.
We added new rules to our Challenge - Competition - Penalty.
