Chapter 9: Misunderstanding
It feels like middle school.
That was the first thought that ever came to my mind once we got out of my house and started walking to school. We used to walk like this, the four of us. The morning air was fresh and sweet. The sun was light and warm.
"How are you getting along at school?"
Benji asked.
"They're great! My deskmate is a nice person, I think I could be close with her!"
Benji nodded, he rubbed my head and laughed.
"I thought you would never make any friends!"
"Yo, that's pretty mean, Benji!"
He said sorry as we walked on.
"How's football at your school?"
"Amazing!" Benji replied to me with unexpected enthusiasm.
He started to talk about the team and his teammates.
"You're doing a good jo..."
"MORNING MA-Mayu..." Someone patted my shoulder when I was about to rub the big boy's head next to me.
It was my new deskmate, a soon-to-be close friend, Kaya. She looked smiley as always. When I was about to greet her, and Benji put on a lets-be-friend smile, she bowed, 90 degrees!
"Could it be, that you're walking with your boyfriend? Oh my! Where's my manner? My bad! See you at school!"
Her black hair disappeared behind the school gate just right in front of us, leaving me speechless. She came like a breeze and left like a storm.
"Your deskmate, right?"
"Ah, she misunderstood!" I wondered if Kaya would tell other classmates about me walking with Benji. Ah, that'd be just as alright, it didn't harm me in any way.
All of a sudden, Benji leaned towards me.
"W-w-what? W-what is it?"
"I've been thinking..." Benji looked troubled, said.
Could it be another weird thought again? My face probably returned to its utmost tomato.
"Your new hair really suits you, Mayu!"
Hearing Benji, I couldn't help but sigh. It's been a week since I had my hair cut, and he still talked about it.
I pushed Benji away. "Thanks! Hurry up! You'll be late!"
He left, waving me, and said out loud.
"Let's make it not a misunderstanding someday, Mayu!!!"
