Chapter 6: The shift

Kelly smiled, a little shy now, her hands stuffed in the pockets of her dress. "I'm... not sure. That was crazy."

Scarlet's smirk deepened, but there was an understanding in her eyes. "You were amazing out there. Didn't know you had that in you."

Kelly's heart fluttered at the compliment, and she couldn't help but laugh, feeling a little embarrassed. "I didn't either, honestly. But it felt... good. Really good."

Scarlet took a long drag of her cigarette, then flicked the ash into the air. "Good," she said, her voice softer than usual. "You should do it more often. You've got the kind of voice people can't ignore."

For a moment, the two of them just stood there in silence, the night air cool between them, the only sound the distant hum of the city. Kelly felt something stirring in her chest, a warmth she couldn't place. She'd always felt safe with Scarlet, but tonight, it felt different. The walls between them seemed to be crumbling bit by bit, replaced by something else...deeper.

"I don't think I've ever thanked you properly," Kelly said, her voice quiet but earnest. "For everything. For tonight, for always having my back. For being the one person who really gets me."

Scarlet looked at her then, the faintest hint of a smile playing on her lips. She took a step closer, her gaze intense. "You don't have to thank me, Kel. You're the one who took the leap. You're the one who got up on that stage."

Kelly felt a rush of warmth at the way Scarlet said her name, the tenderness in her voice that made her heart skip. It was so different from how anyone else spoke to her. There was an unspoken connection between them, something deep, something that felt like it was meant to be. Kelly swallowed, feeling a little nervous as she took a small step closer.

"I'm glad we met, Scarlet," Kelly said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't think I would have been able to do this without you."

Scarlet's gaze softened, and for the first time in a long while, Kelly saw a glimmer of vulnerability in the girl who always wore a mask. Scarlet tossed her cigarette aside, then turned to face her fully, her eyes searching Kelly's.

"Same for me," Scarlet replied, her voice quiet, yet firm. Then, after a pause, she reached up and tucked a stray strand of Kelly's hair behind her ear, her fingers brushing softly against her skin. "You're not so bad, Kel. Maybe you're even worth sticking around for."

Kelly's breath caught, her heart racing as Scarlet's words hung in the air. The playful teasing in Scarlet's voice was still there, but there was something more behind it now. Something Kelly couldn't deny, something that made her heart flutter in her chest.

Before she could say anything, Scarlet leaned in, her lips brushing Kelly's forehead in a brief, unexpected kiss. It was a soft gesture, filled with warmth, but it made Kelly's heart beat wildly in her chest. She closed her eyes for a moment, savoring the feeling.

Scarlet pulled away just as quickly, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "You're lucky I'm not into the whole 'romantic' thing," she teased, but there was no hiding the softness in her tone.

Kelly opened her eyes and met Scarlet's gaze, her heart still pounding in her chest. "I think I'm okay with that," she replied softly. "As long as you keep being you."

Scarlet smirked but there was something undeniably sincere in her eyes. "That's all I can promise, Kel. But you're a lot more than I thought you'd be."

The words hung between them, heavy with unspoken understanding. Neither of them had to say much more. They both knew that, no matter what came next, they had something real between them.

Kelly looked out at the night sky, a sense of contentment washing over her. She had come so far, from the girl who kept everything locked away, to the girl who stood here now—open, vulnerable, and ready to face whatever came next. With Scarlet by her side, she felt like she could take on anything.

The night was still young, and the world outside felt full of possibilities.

And for the first time in a long while, Kelly felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be.
