Chapter 9: It's coming
Kelly turned her head slightly, eyes meeting Scarlet's. The walls between them were crumbling, and the space between them felt suddenly charged with something unspoken, but undeniable. The question hung in the air, waiting for the answer Kelly wasn't sure she could give.
Scarlet met her gaze, her own heart racing now. "This is it, isn't it? She's going to push me away or... or she's going to let me in. No going back now."
But Kelly didn't pull away. Instead, she closed the distance between them, her hand gently touching Scarlet's arm, her fingers trembling slightly. "If she's willing to be honest with me... then maybe it's time I'm honest too."
Scarlet's hand gently lifted Kelly's chin, her fingers grazing the soft skin of her jaw, her thumb brushing against the delicate curve of her neck. For a moment, she let the silence stretch between them, the weight of the moment thickening the air, making everything else fade into the background. Her breath came a little quicker, her heart pounding as she searched Kelly's face for any sign of hesitation.
"Do you want me to stop?" Scarlet's voice was low, barely more than a whisper, but it carried a weight that made Kelly's chest tighten. She'd never seen Scarlet like this, so vulnerable and open, asking for permission, giving Kelly the power to make the decision. It should have felt like too much control, but instead, it made her heart race even more.
Kelly's breath caught in her throat, the question hanging in the air like a fragile thread. Her mind screamed, "Say something! Tell her what you really want!" But her lips were frozen, her pulse thundering in her ears. She felt weak—completely overwhelmed by the closeness of Scarlet's body, the intensity in her eyes, the electric charge between them.
Kelly opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her breath was caught in her chest, leaving her feeling lightheaded. Her heart felt like it was pounding out of her chest, each beat a reminder of how close they were, how close they'd always been.
Her eyes welled up with emotion—tears she hadn't expected. She blinked rapidly to keep them from falling, the overwhelming connection between them making her feel exposed, vulnerable in a way she hadn't let herself be before.
She felt her knees go weak, the world spinning around her as she gazed into Scarlet's eyes. And in that moment, it wasn't just the physical closeness, the touch of Scarlet's hand that was sending a rush of heat through her. It was the realization that, for once, she didn't have to hide from her feelings.
"No... I don't want you to stop." The words were barely audible, but they were there—spoken in the stillness, in the silence that only the two of them could hear.
Scarlet's lips curled into a soft, knowing smile. She didn't need Kelly to say more. The weight of the moment was enough to answer her question.
And with that, the distance between them finally disappeared. Scarlet leaned in, her lips capturing Kelly's in a kiss that was gentle at first, a quiet confirmation of everything that had been building between them. The world around them ceased to exist as Kelly's breath hitched and her hands found their way to Scarlet's shoulders, pulling her closer, letting herself sink into the kiss.
Scarlet's heart raced in time with Kelly's, the kiss deepening, every touch of their lips and every shared breath telling them both that this was what they had been waiting for—the truth, finally unleashed.
The kiss deepened, and Kelly's heart pounded as though it might escape her chest. Every sense was consumed by the way Scarlet's lips felt against hers—so soft, so sure, but gentle, as if they both were savoring the moment. There was a pressure in Kelly's chest, but it wasn't the heavy weight of uncertainty anymore; it was a fluttering, light feeling—like the first breath after diving deep into water, like coming to the surface after drowning in her own emotions.
She could feel Scarlet's hands on her waist, pulling her closer, as if she were trying to erase every inch of space between them. Kelly's hands instinctively moved to Scarlet's face, her fingers trembling slightly as they traced the sharp lines of her jaw, memorizing the feel of her skin, of her warmth.
For a moment, Kelly pulled back just slightly, her forehead resting against Scarlet's, both of them breathless, eyes closed, their bodies still tangled in that magnetic pull.
"Scarlet..." Kelly whispered, her voice shaking, her lips still tingling from the kiss.
"Yeah?" Scarlet breathed, her lips barely moving as she spoke, as though the mere sound of Kelly's name was enough to make her heart flutter.
Kelly's voice faltered as she spoke, her emotions raw and unguarded. "I never thought... I mean, I never expected this. But it feels..." Her eyes welled up again, her heart in turmoil. "It feels like I've been waiting for this my whole life."
Scarlet's expression softened, and she cupped Kelly's face in her hands, the touch so light, so delicate, it almost made Kelly feel like she might shatter. "You don't have to say anything. You don't have to explain. I get it. I know."
Scarlet's thumb brushed across Kelly's cheek, wiping away a tear that had fallen without her even noticing. "You're not alone, Kel. Not anymore."
Kelly's breath hitched as she gazed at her, feeling a surge of gratitude, of something more, stirring within her. For the first time in what felt like forever, she didn't feel like she had to hide any part of herself. "I don't know what to do with all of this," she admitted quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Scarlet smiled softly, her lips curving into something both playful and reassuring. "We'll figure it out. Together."
And in that moment, Kelly realized that, maybe for the first time in her life, she didn't have to carry the weight of her past on her own. She had someone who was there for her, someone who wasn't just going to leave when things got complicated, someone who saw her, truly saw her, for who she was.
She wasn't just Kelly anymore. She was part of something bigger now—part of something she could never have imagined before. And it felt right, like she was finally where she was meant to be.
With that thought, she kissed Scarlet again, this time with more certainty, more purpose. There was no need to say more, no need to explain. They were there, in the moment, with their hearts open, their souls connected, and in that space, everything felt just as it should.
