A new beginning

"Sakura get up! It's eleven in the morning"
"Mmm " was my reply as I snuggled deeply in my pillow. I was just about to slip deep into my dreams when I heard a loud yell in my ear which caused me to scramble away from it. Fortunately I was successful in getting away, unfortunately I fell from the other side of the bed.
As I lay on the floor fuming I heard their laughter. Standing up I saw my nieces sitting just where I was sleeping moments ago.
The younger of the two had her eyes filled with joy. Sinthia was three years old and the youngest of her siblings. She has a doll like face small round hazel eyes, thin pink lips and short light brown hair. She rarely gets scolded for pulling pranks because of her adorable looks.
Misty was six years old and unlike Sinthia was an exact copy of her mother. Smooth skin with a light tan, round face, big doe like eyes, full lips and shoulder length black hair. She looked uncomfortable and looked like she wanted to run away.
I sighed. Clearly this was Sinthia's idea.
"Go. I'll be down in half an hour" with that I entered my bathroom and sat on the floor. I was about to return to my dreamland when I heard Sinthia telling me not to sleep in the bathroom or she will tell her mother. I banged my head on the door and heard them leaving my room.
'I'll be having a word with my sister' I thought as I started the shower. 'I guess she gave up trying to wake me after her first five unsuccesfull attempt at waking me up.'
After the shower I stood in front of my mirror. Soft features, small teal colored eyes, full pink lips and long brown hair that reaches my hips. I have curves in all right places for a fifteen year old. I quickly dressed in my jeans and a random green shirt And went downstairs.
After finding no one in the kitchen I ate my breakfast and washed all the dishes in the sink. After that I went outside.
We lived in a small town near the ocean. Near the town was a forest and beyond them were the mountains. It was a beautiful day today giving a false sense of security.
I started looking for Sinthia and Misty. I found Sinthia pestering her older brother to play with her. Daniel was ten but was short his age. You mistake him for an eight year old. He had short dark brown hair and light green eyes which was the only thing he took from his father. I like to think that he's an old soul because rather than playing he finds comfort in books and painting.
When he saw me he quickly diverted Sinthia's attention towards me. I sighed 'could I ever get a break'
Even though I didn't have a good reputation with my ' I don't give a shit about you' and others usually stayed away from me but my sister's children never even once got scared of me.
Either they are too brave or I'm going too soft.
Sinthia took my hand happily and we made our way towards the other children.
I have no idea what happened. One moment I was chasing Misty and the next I heard screams as the ground started shaking. Ignoring everyone else I took Sinthia and Misty's hand and made a bee line for Daniel. After finding him I gave him my sisters cellphone.
"Take care of Sinthia and Misty. Call me if anything bad happens and stay with Auntie Nora" I said as I took him to our neighbour. I quickly left them there without waiting for an answer. I ran into the forest since I knew that was where sis always goes every Tuesday to find herbs.
'Shit why it had to be today' I asked myself as I went deeper into the forest.
When I found her she was covered in dirt and her eyes were filled with fear and shock. I turned my head in the direction she was looking and froze on my spot.
Lava and lots of it was coming out of the mountains making it's way towards the forest and the town.
'We've to get out of here' I thought and unconsciously said it out loud because I saw Alice nodding. That snapped me out of my state of shock, I took her hand as we started running towards the town.
"Oh my God. What are we going to do and oh the children. Sakura where..."
"They are fine" I interrupted her "Calm down. It'll be fine, nothing will happen to any of us."
She didn't say anything probably thinking that we all are going to die but my brain was running overtime thinking everything we can do to escape. No way in hell am I going to sit and accept my fate. I will fight tooth and nail and do anything to survive.
"When there is will there is a way." I remembered my mother quoting whenever we were in troubled times. After her death things have never been the same as before. Back then she would always console us and never let us face troubles alone.
As we left the forest and entered the town we saw everyone terrified and running here and there without a plan. In the distance I saw about seven ships but didn't pay any mind to it since myattention was directed towards the
'Water. That's a plan. At least now I've something to work on but first...'
"Stop. Everyone stop." I said in a loud voice ignoring Alice's sudden tight grip on my hand. When every looked at me I continued "you'll gain nothing with running in circles without a plan. You need to first calm down and then think.
"How can we be calm when who knows how much time we've to escape" someone asked me from crowd.
"We've about three hours, more or less. We obviously can't leave on foot or cars so the only thing we can do is to escape through ocean and pray that it works for us one way or the other." They looked towards the ocean and saw the ships and like me ignored asking about them. All that mattered was escaping.
They all looked at me expecting further instructions. With a loud sigh I started telling them of what I think was to be done.
"First of all, all the elders and children should get on the ships. The women will gather all the valuable things, medical supplies, curtains, clothes and blankets. The men will remain behind and load the ships with food, water, alcohol, all the ropes you can find, tools, some weapons, extra wood, gas cylinders and light furniture." They all noded and started following the instructions.
"Since when did you become the leader type?" asked my sister with amusement lacing her voice.
"Since the situation started asking for it" was my quite reply as I dragged her to Nora's house.
When the children saw us they ran sobbing towards us. I never saw Daniel cry but I guess he was still too young for this sort of thing. I explained every thing to Nora and send the children with her to the ships. She will be taking care of other children during this chaos and try to calm them down. She had that aura about her. She could calm your nerves and give a sense of security. She lived alone, therefore didn't have many things. We sent her and children ahead with some clothes and her jewellery.
I've no idea if what I'm doing is right or not. All I can hope for is that it'll work.
After helping as much as I could I decided to take rest. After all I was a little girl and they were all grownups. I couldn't do much hard labour. As I was getting on my feet after five minutes rest I heard a loud scream coming from the forest.
Everyone looked horrified but ignored it and focused on their tasks. However I ran past them and entered the forest ignoring everyone else. I couldn't see anyone in pain, since I know how it feels both emotionally and physically.
After some time I heard another scream confirming that I was running in the right directions. What I saw made me freeze. The girl was no older than four years old. Her pretty face and hair was covered in dirt and blood. Her beautiful brown eyes were filled with fear and tears. Her dress was ruined and I could see that her feet was injured. In the distance I could see a body of a woman burning from the hot lava.
Tears filled my eyes. 'Is that what will happen to us if we don't escape?' I thought as fear filled my body. I don't know what came over but I suddenly raised my hands in front of me. I could feel a foreign energy in body as ice started surrounding my hand. Without thinking I directed it towards the lava and prayed with all my heart for it work. I saw the ice coming in contact with the lava. For a moment nothing happened but after a moment the lava started freezing in it's place . I repeated this process for other side as well and after the whole front layer was done I stopped. It won't stop the lava but it'll slow it down for now.
I ran towards the child and whispered calm words to her. I told her to wrap her arms around my neck and she complied. I ran towards the town as fast as I could trying not to trip over tree roots and random obstacles.
I learned that the girl's name was Maya and she was searching herbs with her mother in the forest. Her mother was ill and was unable to run when the lava came. They were caught unprepared since they thought that it was only small earthquake and didn't notice the lava. When Maya tried running away she didn't get far before tripping and spraining her ankle. That's where I came and saved her. When she asked about my ice I panicked.
"Maya, no matter what happenes never tell anyone about what you saw. Just tell them that I carried you back and nothing else. Okay?" I pleaded with her.
"Okay but how did you do that? Would you teach me?" She asked me. I was happy that she wasn't thinking about her mother's death but how could I answer her about my powers when I barely know about them myself.
"We'll see" was my quiet answer. When we entered the town addressed everyone in a loud voice "We hardly have half an hour so gather the necessary things and start getting on the ships as fast as you can."
Everyone panicked and started to get the last of things and getting on the ships. With Maya still on my back I quickly checked all the houses to see if they left anyone behind.
When I entered my house I had tears in my eyes. All those years of hard work will now be destroyed by the nature I quickly entered my room and went to my closet. My clothes were gone so I presumed that my sister already took them but I was sure she didn't take all my things. I set Maya on the floor and took my bag from the closet. I went to my bed and looked under it.
'There' I said in my mind as I found my box and opened it to find some photo albums, empty drawing books, all sorts of pens, pencils and colours, empty diaries, jewellery box and other things that to others might be trash but for me they were the most important things of my life.
I filled my bag with all my things. I took Maya in my arms and went to our study room. Now people may call me mad for taking these things when we are minutes away from death but I'm only doing what my instincts were telling me to do and I take my instincts very seriously.
In our study room I took the sword and a dagger hanging on the wall. Back then we only took it for decoration from the second hand market but later I came to know that they have a very interesting history. After taking some books on different languages and dictionaries I made my way to the kitchen. From there i took my first aid kit, a big sewing kit since my sister kept it there for God knows why and a large bag of match boxes. With that I quickly left the house with Maya.
All this took about ten minutes according to my watch. From outside I looked calm but from the inside I was panicking. The ships were about to leave in five minutes as promised. We got there in time and got on the one where my family was. I searched for them when I found Nora holding a crying Sinthia and from the looks of it Misty and Daniel were not far from it. By now we had started moving away from the shore. Suddenly I felt like I was missing something. It was like I forgot a very important thing. I ignored the feeling and took large steps towards them.
When the children saw me they came running towards me. I slowly lowered Maya on the ground and hugged them with everything I had. They were loudly crying now as I started saying sweet things to them. When they calmed down they asked the one question that brought my world crashing down.
"Aunt Sakura, where is mommy?"
I stopped breathing but then reasoned with myself that she propably was on other ship. That was until I heard my name being called from far away. I quickly went to look for the source from the side of the ship but I had a horrible feeling in my stomach and what I saw conformed it.
"Alice!" I screamed her name as I saw her and some other women standing on the shore. Even from this far I could see her tears. 'No this can't be happening' I thought as I saw her falling down on the ground. I screamed her name again and tried to jump down the ship. I would have been successful if not for the arms that held me back. I kicked and screamed as I saw lava not far from them but the tight grip didn't let go.
I went limp as I saw Alice and the other women getting in a car and driving away from it. The one holding me let go when it was clear that I won't do anything foolish.
I hid my emotions and put on a calm expression. 'Crying won't help' I told my self as I went to Sinthia, Misty and Daniel and hugged them. 'They're mine to take care of from now on and I'll do it with everything that I,ve got. That's a
Promise sister' I said in my mind as a lone tear left my eye.'
"Aunt Sakura, where is mom?" This time it was Daniel who asked me.
I felt like someone stabbed my heart with a knife.
"She is gone and wants me to take care of you from now on."
A sob left Daniel as he understood what I meant.
I went back to the side of ship to take one last look at my home. We were quite far away from shore and I could see the lava falling into the water and turning it into vapours. My instincts are telling that it will work and we are safe.
Our town and homes are destroyed. We have no where to live but these ships. It feels like we have been given a new chance since we are alive and safe.
It feels like it's a new beggining.
