My kingdom is all I've ever known. It's all I ever thought I would know. My mother and father and brothers. The nobles and common folk. The cattle and crops. And, among it all, I was the prized princess.

So why were they making me get married?

I thought I would spend my whole life getting pampered. But I'm nine now and started bleeding last month, so my parents are marrying me off to my father's close friend; an older, stout noble.

It was all happening so fast. I sat in front of my mirror, gazing at my reflection. I looked pretty in my white dress, but I didn't feel pretty. It was like there were ants crawling in my skin.

"You're such a pretty girl, [NAME]," my mother cooed from behind me, making sure my hair was perfect.

I opened my mouth to reply when a sudden boom shook the ground.

"... Huh...?"

My mother, on shaky legs, stood and walked over to the window.

"Oh... Oh no...!" She gasped.

She looked at me with wide, horror-filled eyes.

"[NAME]...! Oh, [NAME]!"

"Mom...?"

I stood and walked to the window, looking to see what frightened her.

...

Huh?

Dad said that we're far away from the titans. That we're well-protected from them.

So why was I watching one bite the head off of a girl who could be no older than me?

I didn't fully register what was going on as my mother grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the window.

"We have to leave! We have to go far, far away!" My mother yelped, dragging me down the stairs.

My dress, however, was long, and it caused us to trip down the stairs. My fall was cushioned by my mother, but my weight seemed to be too much for her. She took the brunt of the fall, resulting in her breaking her leg.

"We have to go... We have to go..." She murmured repeatedly under her breath.

"Mom!" I shouted, crying out as the roof and walls of the castle collapsed.

I've only seen titans in my picture books. Seeing one in person... It was something completely different. It reached out, and I instinctively rushed away, leaving my mom behind.

"[NAME]!"

My eyes filled with tears as I listened to my mother's screams. I regretted looking back. It made my heart well with guilt and sadness. I watched as it bit my mother in half, almost immediately ceasing her cries.

"Mom...!"

I shook my head and turned away, holding up my dress so I could run easier. Thankfully, there were still a few horses around, so I mounted one that was far too big for me just as it ran off.

I looked back, seeing the rubble of what was once my kingdom. My home.
