Armin came down as well, and we cried together as we huddled around our best friend. He was still asleep when I got a bad feeling in my stomach. Slowly, I looked up and saw our superiors start heading towards us, and they didn't look happy.
"Guys... Guys!" I said, standing quickly, "We need to get out of here!"
The other two seemed to sense my urgency. Mikasa and I hoisted up Eren, and with Armin, we ran off, prompting them to chase after us. After a while, we ended up getting cornered by the wall.
Mikasa and I stood with our swords bared, looking at the other soldiers with narrowed eyes. We were horribly outnumbered... They kept insisting that Eren was a threat to humanity. I would probably think the same if I didn't know him, but I do, and I won't back down without a fight.
"I'm gonna kill 'em all..."
I quickly looked behind me and saw Eren, who was now awake, looking around with a shocked expression. I let my guard down slightly.
"Eren...!" I gasped in relief.
"Eren! You can move, right?! Are you fully conscious?!" Armin, who was kneeled beside him, asked frantically, not giving him time to answer, "Tell me everything! Talk to me! We're bound to figure it out!"
Murmurs broke out within the other soldiers. They talked about Eren's murmured words, which they somehow heard. They interpreted it as him talking about killing and eating them. No... No, that's completely wrong!
"You're taking his words out of context, you fools!" I shouted angrily, "He's talking about the titans!"
"You shut your mouth, girl!" Shouted one of our superiors who had a beard, "Traitor Eren Jaeger! You have come to your senses, I see! The behavior you four exhibit makes you look like traitors to humanity! Therefore, I'm going to have to decide how we should dispose of your lives!
"Try to pull off any trick or leave that spot..." He gestured to a canon that was positioned on top of the wall and aimed at us. "... and you'll be eating explosives! We'll shoot without hesitation! I'll get straight to the point. What are you? Human or titan?"
There was a pause. I glanced back at Eren, who had wide eyes filled with shock and confusion. Then, he spoke.
"I...! I fail to understand the meaning of your question, sir!" He stated.
That answer angered the man.
"Are you playing dumb with me?! You damn freak! Come on, try again! We'll turn you to fucking dust on the spot! You won't even have time to assume your true form!
"Lots of people saw what happened! They were right there, watching you come out of that titan! We humans are facing an invasion of your monstrous kind into Wall Rose! It doesn't matter if you number among the trainees sanctioned by the king himself! It is perfectly suitable to swiftly eliminate any threat! In this, I know I'm right!
"That freakishly strong titan who destroyed Wall Maria five years ago might show up again any time, now! Our very existence, that of the human race, is at stake! We cannot afford to fail as we did back then! Understand?! We have no more time or soldiers to spare on your account! I'll have you blown to Kingdom Come!"
"Are you done?" I hummed, tightening my grip on my swords, "You really like the sound of your own voice, huh? What a pathetic excuse of a man."
"My specialty..." Mikasa murmured, "In wolves flesh and the laceration of thereof. You just draw close enough, and I'll be happy to demonstrate. Should any of you wish to experience my technique, by all means, feel free to come this way."
They started murmuring again and shouted for us to join their side. I scoffed and refused, as did Mikasa. Do they really expect me to turn my back on my friend? Dumbasses.
"I'll ask again!" Our superior shouted, "What are you really?!"
"I... I am...!" Eren stammered, "I'm human."
"... I see... Please don't resent us for this. We have no other choice. You see, no other man has been in this position to see the evil in their own hearts."
He raised an arm, and the people who were posted at the canons prepared to fire. Mikasa quickly went to pick up Eren while Armin tried to see reason.
"They won't listen to you, Armin! We have to go!" I yelled, grabbing him by his wrist.
Eren suddenly broke away from Mikasa's grip and threw all three of us behind him. He seemed to bite his thumb, which caused an explosion in front of us. Steam billowed everywhere as I looked up at the sight of... a titan...? No, wait... It's only the upper body of a titan, and even then, it was partly flesh and partly skeleton. Nonetheless, it shielded us from the explosion of the canon.
