Chapter 4.1: The eyes

tranginski

"Bye bye~! Take care, don't forget to visit me every now and then!" Faroe waved her three brothers off.

"Goodbye."

.

The Vikings' rows of vessels continued their voyage across the sea, making for enriched, prosperous lands.

"If n't Sc'tland, where would w' go?" Sweden asked.

Norway smiled, pointing at a tremendous territory on the map.

"Certainly we're enjoying a big fight." Denmark was elated at the destination.

.

.

"Sire Francia, all southern monasteries have been ravaged and robbed!" A soldier ran up in a panic.

"Sire, pillaging in the north is getting uncontrollable, our people are horrified." Another reported.

"Monsieur, we've lost Flemish!"

"WHAT?" The king stood up in shock.

"Sire..."

"Sire..."

"Sire..."

.

.

"SHUT UPPPP!"

All fell into silence.

.

"Robbing, ravaging, the savages... I'm fed up now, why couldn't our crowded local army stand a chance against them?" the young man grumbled.

"Monsieur, all the savages are atrocious warriors, our force lost the will to fight back." said a courtier.

"Then increase our number of men, choose the most powerful ones."

"Sire..." A soldier rushed into the palace.

"What's else? It should be some useful news!"

"Sire, they... they're on the way to Paris."

.

"They're picking a fight with the wrong one!" The blonde king growled.

.

Fighting at this land was not so much a struggle as Sweden had expected. They were sailing upstream of the Seine, to the royal capital of France. The king was also preparing thoroughly for the attack, they needed to stay concentrated.

However, since their incursion began outside the coast, Norway had a strange behavior of, slight hesitation. Denmark said there was no intrusion that the quiet Norwegian would not strike terror into others with his murderous look. If he was right, this time had to be an odd exception. What's happened? Denmark and Sweden wondered.

What's with me today? Why do I feel anxious all of a sudden? There's something keeping me at bay, as if... there's always some fuzzy feature appearing when I take plunder. Just cannot concentrate... No, you need to stay acute, everyone is counting on you, Norge.

"Norge, are you okay?" Denmark asked worriedly.

"I'm fine. Long time having no fights at all makes me a bit stunned now, don't worry."

"That's ... good, I've thought something's bothering you. Everybody, READY TO BEAT THAT FRANCE DOWN?" Denmark yelled.

"YEAH!" The Vikings roared.

"Ready, Sverige? Let see which one of us is the real fighter." Denmark said.

Sweden slightly curved his lips.

.

.

The French army was waiting for their unwanted visitors. Schemes had been well-prepared, and France stayed incredibly patient.

The Viking ships were closely approaching, not too great in number, and... what was that? A group of kids? What were those kids doing here?

"Hey you, today the Vikings are gonna show their formidable strength! Surrender now, old guy!" Denmark excitedly threatened.

Oh, never expected their representatives would be a bunch of brats! Then today they'd all bite the dust, ohonhonhon!

"Ooh la la, scary words eh? Big brother shouldn't hold back if you're that willing, should he? Everyone, ADVANCE!" France yelled.

"GO!" The Vikings lunged forward.

"Watch and learn, Sverige." said Denmark. "Let's go, Norge."

The fight went fierce and dramatic. Though outnumbered, the Vikings were all well-equipped, experienced warriors, while their French opponents were slowly worn out and so was France. Norway and Sweden were completely high-spirited, but the former country always caused the most bloodshed.

"Eh?" An image flashed through Norway's mind. It was a pair of emerald eyes, staring at him intently. There was no clue of their owner, but the eyes made him scared.

Suddenly Norway lost the will to fight. No, what's happening?! I must move forward!

"Norge, you've been injured?" Denmark asked worriedly.

"Just a bit tired, keep going on."

.

.

"These brats... Shit, they're strong." France started to worry, he needed to do something.

"Yo, where are you heading to? Should at least come and greet your guests!" Denmark provoked.

"I'm staying here, just waiting till you voluntarily surrender your lives." said France.

"No more talking, come and end this right now." Norway seemed to run out of patience.

"Bring it on!" France plunged into the combat with the Norwegian. In the end...

.

.

"I SURRENDER! I SURRENDER! Spare me please, you faraway northern countries..." France fell on his knees, gripped Norway's leg and begged.

"I haven't attacked, why do you..." His young rival gasped.

"You're free to do anything but destroying my pretty dearest home! Big brother will give you money and gold too... and other properties if you don't like them... I beg you, just don't bother me and my kingdom!" The blonde pleaded with an extremely pathetic face.

"Hm... Danmark, Sverige, what do you think?"

"His face looks so disheartening, I don't dare to..."

"Gold m'ght be a good id'a..." said Sweden.

Thinking for a while, Norway said, "Money will soon run out however much you give us... Regarding your surrender, I'll accept your offer with one condition: give us a rich and fertile area of land."

Fertile land? It's a great loss for me! But reject his demand wouldn't be better... Dammit, no other way but to agree with it. France had no choice but to subdue his rage and accept the deal.

"What do you think about this region?"

"Looks great. The Vikings from now on can reside and cultivate in this place. Like I've promised, we won't annoy you, at least for a time." said Norway.

"Don't break your words..." Just wait, vengeance is just a matter of time, you'll pay for today. France told himself.

.

.

"Norge, how will you call our new land?" asked Denmark.

"Normandie..."

"Norman... Does this relate to Norge people?"

"No, that name means 'the land of those from the North', our land, not anyone else's."

"Such a nice title! We've got a new territory, let's party shall we?!" The young Dane cheerfully said.

The Viking conquerers then engaged in a big party to celebrate their victory. The fun did not stop till midnight.

After their festive time, the three children lied next to the fire, gazing at the night sky.

"It's great if everything goes on like this, right?"

"Yes, it is."

"I'm wondering what is high above there, do you think it's the gods from Asgard watching us?" Denmark asked.

(Asgard: the home of gods from Æsir tribe, according to Norse myths. There's also another tribe of gods called Vanir whose place of residence is named Vanaheimr, but it is the Æsir tribe who plays the major role in the whole mythology as it's the origin of most important gods like Odin or Thor.)

"Not only us, the gods witness all creatures in this world. They control nature and everything's fate in their environment. They see it all, the good, the bad, virtues and vices. They try to keep this Earth stable and last for eternity."

"For eternity? So what about this, we take a vow, together, before the eyes of all the gods." Denmark suggested.

"Vow what?"

"Our friendship will also last for eternity, nothing could separate us."

"Nice id'a, let's d' it." Sweden agreed.

"Before our supreme gods from sacred Asgard, before our Odin, we swear that we're forever friends, forever brothers, nothing could break us apart even if one day Ragnarök would take place."

(Ragnarök: also known as The Final Battle, a catastrophic encounter between the Gods and the jötnar (giants), which ended in the destruction of the world.)

.

.

"Chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp..."

The damned sound breaking their solemn moment was from a bird on a nearby tree. Its chirp got increasingly irritating...

"DIE!" Denmark threw his murderous axe at the bird, which fortunately managed to fly away.

"It must pay for interrupting us."

'

.

In a bush...

"Hey, step back a little, why do you keep sticking to me?" A young man grunted at the guy who'd been leaning on him.

"Waiting there is tiring me out~ Be the teddy bear for a second, please?~ Ohonhonhon... you're reallly a hunk, eh?" France was busy with the everyone-knows-what-it-is action.

WHACK!

"One more time and welcome to my torture cell." The other man punched him in the face.

"Ow! Why do you do that to the fragile me Scotland? This handsome face is my most precious thing, you brute who has no idea of how to treasure the beauty!"

"Stop fooling around. Why isn't your spy present now?"

"Chirp chirp chirp..."

"Pierre! Here you are! Tell me... NO, not my face you little thing... stop pecking... AGH, MY DELICATE FACE!" France frantically whined.

"Chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp!"

"I'm sorrrrry! I didn't know, next time I won't force you to venture like that!" The bird named Pierre seemed to have sworn to never do such a job once more.

"Pierre, what are they doing?... Uh huh... um...oh... ah..."

Scotland felt like he had been staying with a psycho.

"They're all asleep. Time to act." France announced.

"You understand the bird? Is he reliable?"

"He's never wrong. Let's go."

.

.

Several hours later...

"That's it! You see, they're sleeping. It's time to reclaim what is ours."

"Yeah."

.

"Be quiet..." Scotland whispered, as they cautiously closed in on the asleep Vikings.

His sword got nearer, nearer to some throat... *GLARE*

"AAAAAAAGGGHHHHHHHHH!"

France frightenedly retreated as the three kids suddenly opened their eyes, he couldn't imagine their faces were getting so fearsome.

"Come back here and fight, coward! I... I don't need you anymore!" Scotland yelled.

"You're nerveless Scot, daring to backstab us!" Denmark growled.

"All I want is to teach you a lesson. Oh, who's that, a newbie? Another moron wanting to show off." Scotland mocked when seeing Sweden.

"You've got on the wrong one's nerves! Sverige, I leave him to you!" said the messy-haired.

*GLARE*~~~~~~~~~ (You know what happened next).

.

.

A breeze blowing by made Norway awake. He slowly opened his indigo irises, before seeing an immense meadow spreading to apparently nowhere, with a vast field of blooming yellow blossoms lightening up the horizon. He felt that this place was sort of... familiar.

Why am I here? Have to find Danmark and Sverige first. Norway kept relaxedly strolling, however, which bad things could happen to his friends in such a tranquil place?

The Norwegian boy walked for what seemed like forever, forgetting the world around, completely submerging in the spell this magical land cast on him...

I hear your voice on the wind
And I hear you call out my name.

Norway seeked for the mysterious enchanting voice and music echoing in the air. He found a boy of the same age, whose hands were holding a lyre.

The boy turned around to look at Norway. The eyes... those emerald eyes... were them the ones he'd seen during the fight with France? They were!

The boy smiled at him before turning round again, heading for the forest.

"Hey, wait, I want..." Norway chased him, but as reaching the edge of the forest, the large area of trees suddenly caught ablaze. That boy was still in it...

"Get out of there, it's dangerous!" Norway cried out. He tried to run into the forest on fire to save the boy, yet there was an invisible wall getting in his way.

The strange boy just stood still, his startling green eyes gazed at Norway's with sadness.

"NO! DON'T GO!" Norway screamed.

"PLEASE, STAY HERE, HEY, DON'T GO!"

"Norge! Norge! Wake up, Norge!" Denmark's voice rose.

Norway jerked awake, realizing it was a nightmare.
