Summer is here

Epilogue

AnhThuNguyenViet

I stood in front of his grave, one hand shoved deep into my pocket, the other clutching a bouquet of sunflowers. The place was too quiet, with only the sound of the wind rustling through the trees and my own breathing. I knelt down, setting the bouquet gently in front of his headstone. Their petals were warm and vibrant, just like him.

"Ishimaru..."

I reached out, brushing the dust off his engraved name. I recalled the time he once told me that the name Ishimaru was a curse. Being born with it meant he had to live up to expectations, follow the rules, work himself to the bone just to be recognized.

But I never saw it that way,

Because to me, Ishimaru was a miracle.

And of course, someone like me... someone like me never deserved to hold onto something that precious. That last night, when we talked over the phone, I couldn't even say I loved him. Couldn't even say goodbye. Hell, I couldn't even call him by his name...

I got to my feet and walked away in silence.

By the time I reached the parking lot, I swung my leg over my bike, kicked up the stand, and revved the engine. But I didn't head straight home. Instead, I stopped at the old flame tree by the gates of Hope's Peak Academy.

I looked up at the deep red blossoms swaying in the wind, like little flickering embers welcoming summer.

I reach out, catching one between my fingers. That color—it reminds me of his eyes. The eyes of the only person I ever loved.

"Summer's finally here, huh?" I whisper, a small smile tugging at my lips. "You can take it easy now, Kiyotaka."
