8 Truth
Part 8 Truth
"Whaaat? Are you going to tell him? This is not funny..." Khushi said, panicking.
"I'm also telling the same. This is not funny. How dare she ask me to..." he stopped, without completing it and changed the gear angrily.
Khushi understood what she would have asked him.
"Her husband is a nice man..."
Cutting her off,
"Exactly... such a nice man should not be cheated."
"It will create unnecessary problems in their family."
"If she makes an unnecessary move, they should face it. Can't help."
"Are you serious?"
"Damn serious. If she wants something that she doesn't get from her husband, she should have divorced him and found someone. Instead, she was dragging other men to her bed. I can't tolerate such a cheap action."
"You rejected her invitation. It's over. Why are you creating a scene upon that?"
"It's not over... she will invite someone again. He won't reject her just as I did..."
"It's not your concern. Please consider..."
"I already did... I would not have taken it seriously if she hadn't invited me. But now, I can't back off..."
Khushi sighed. She was scared. If Arnav did what he said, it would create a big scene. At the same time, she liked his stand. Besides, rejecting her, he wanted to reveal her at any cost.
"Bloody woman... making people think of her husband low..."
"Many men are doing the same to their wives. Will you do the same to them also?"
"I'm not here to reveal everyone. I do my work and mind my business until they cross my path. I can't control rogues, but only myself."
"Means?"
"Means, I will be right..."
Khushi smiled.
Arnav dropped her off at the office.
"Cool yourself down..." Khushi said and walked inside.
Arnav drove off smilingly. He earned goodwill from Khushi, no doubt. Who would not like a man who wanted to be right? He avoided a woman who voluntarily invited him. If anyone had been in his place, he would not have done the same, but would have used the chance. A man like him was rare these days. Khushi knew it. She had crossed many men in her life after her father's demise. It was not easy to survive alone in the world because society was never promising for women. But Komal, like a woman, didn't care about self-respect. Khushi, too, wanted to reveal Komal, but she hesitated, thinking about Jithendar. She felt bad about him. She knew how painful it would be for him to know his wife.
Khushi came to the manager's room, thinking about all these. She gave him the appointment order. He took her to her cubicle.
"This is your cubicle, Madam. Our senior staff will train you. Good luck," he wished.
"Thank you, sir..."
Khushi sat in her seat. After praying to Devi Maiya, she logged on to her computer. As the manager said, a senior female staff member trained her. Khushi was happy because the woman was polite. She was given snacks and juice at 11 o'clock... of course, everyone.
Khushi heard a staff member next to her cubicle say,
"What's special today? Why are snacks and juice provided?"
"I too don't know..." another one said.
"It seems today is a special day for this company," Khushi thought.
Likewise, tea was provided at 4 o'clock. The woman who trained Khushi murmured.
"It will be good if they provide tea every day..."
"Don't they usually provide, Madam?" Khushi asked.
"No... this is the first time they are providing. You are lucky to get it on the first day itself." She said.
"May I know your good name?"
"Manju..." she smiled.
Manju asked Khushi to wind up the work at 6 o'clock. Khushi came out of the office and found Arnav there. He smiled at her.
"Are you waiting for me?"
"Then? You agreed to give me two thousand..."
Khushi rolled her eyes and sat in the car.
"Don't you go again?" she asked.
"Madam, from morning, I have driven the car for more than two hundred kilometres. I can't drive anymore. It's enough."
"You are so concerned about money but not ready to work hard..."
"Our health is more important than anything, Madam. If we lose our health, then we can't do anything with money."
Khushi nodded.
"I don't know, you would also be like your sister..."
Khushi shrank her eyes.
"What do you mean?"
"She asked me to marry her..."
Khushi looked at him surprisingly, through the rearview mirror. Arnav also looked at her and smiled.
"When did it happen?"
"Last week... she proposed to me for marriage."
"It seems you got a bride as you wished..."
"No way..."
"Why?"
"I wanted to get my mother's permission. I told her the same. She too enquired about my salary details. I told her about my real status. She asked me to work for the whole night to earn more."
Khushi wanted to hit her forehead.
"I thought of going to my village to meet my mother this weekend. But everything changed."
"What changed?"
"She is not talking to me. I told her about going to my village, but she denied..."
"Denied means?"
"She asked me not to talk to my mother about her..."
"She would have avoided you after the new paying guest came... right?" Khushi asked.
"Yesss... how do you know?"
"Is it rocket science or what?"
"But, I can't understand..."
"She should have chosen him over you..."
Arnav looked at her, turning his head with a weird expression.
"Do you know her character?"
Khushi didn't answer.
"I should have alerted you when you warned me." He sighed.
"But, thank God... the new paying guest came..."
"Why?"
"What would have happened if he came after our marriage?" he asked, controlling his smiled and Khushi burst out laughing.
"She would become another Mrs Jithendar, I suppose..." he added.
"She is not that cheap, I suppose," Khushi said.
"Then, the new paying guest is safe..." Arnav chuckled.
Khushi smiled. She didn't expect him to be jovial. She thought, being a village guy, he would have less knowledge. But he looked mature.
"I didn't expect you to be jovial." He said the same thing that she thought about him.
Khushi looked at him, wondering.
"You were so rigid when we met for the first time. I was scared to talk to you..." He said.
"Scared and you? I believed..." She said sarcastically.
"Trust me, I was scared about you..."
Khushi smiled.
They reached the house. Arnav went to his house, whereas Khushi opened the lock. She looked behind and got stuck, seeing Jithendar standing.
"Uncle..."
"I need to talk to you..." He said.
"Tell me, uncle..."
"You should tell me the truth. Promise me..."
Khushi was alert.
"What are you talking about, uncle?"
"I heard something about my wife..." He said and stopped, looking into her eyes.
Khushi averted her eyes from him and suffocated.
"I want to know if it is true. I believe you will not lie."
"I... don't know what you are talking about..."
"The hesitation in your voice makes me shiver..." Jithendar said miserably.
"Nothing is like that, Uncle. You don't have to take anything seriously. People will talk about anything..."
Cutting her off,
"I haven't told you the matter yet. Yet, you started consoling me?"
"Uncle..." she sighed.
"I wanted to know the truth, and I got to know... You might not tell me, but the restlessness in your eyes..." Jithendar left.
Khushi sighed. She didn't know if it was Arnav who told her the truth. She went to his portion with rage. She stopped at his doorstep as a different smell hit her nose. She pushed the door and saw Arnav eating something from a box. A famous Five-Star hotel name was written on it.
To be continued...
