CHAPTER 13
Recently, the prison had received more prisoners — some new, some transferred from other areas. One of them was a girl, about 23, Wasian, seemingly a first-time offender. Her name was Jessica Penees — kinda shy, curious, and graceless. She didn't let anyone sleep, murmuring something continuously all night. Vivienne couldn't sleep well for three days since Jessica came to her cell, so she decided to talk to her.
"Hey... Jessica... look at me," Vivienne whispered.
Jessica turned her head toward Vivienne, replying shyly, "Vause... I think people here call each other by their last name."
Vivienne deadpanned, leaning against the bunk. "I'm sorry, I just can't say yours with a straight face."
Jessica looked confused. Vivienne continued, "I know this is your first time... mine was too. But I believe letting people sleep well is one of the best ways to start a new prison life."
Vivienne slightly touched Jessica's hand to reassure her. "You'll get used to it... make friends. So... can we sleep?"
Jessica looked at Vivienne intently, her eyes full of expectation. "You'll be my friend?... Right?" She hesitated. "Alex?... Can I call you Alex?"
Vivienne was a little surprised, then forced a smile. "Yeah... sure." Having said that, she headed back to her bunk, pulled the blanket over herself, and tried to sleep.
The next morning, most people in the prison were already terrified by Jessica's nonsense, thinking she should be sent to the mental ward. Almost all of Jessica's stories were about her boyfriend, her ex, her ex-ex...
Lux seemed tired. She walked up to Vivienne. "Me and the bullshit new girl just did some fun... you know, just tried some." Then Lux suddenly looked like she'd remembered something horrible, groaning, "She fucking yap-yap-yap, never shut her mouth."
Vivienne smirked, unbothered. "Seems like it's gonna be a bit tiring later."
Suddenly, an old woman, unable to stand the noise any longer, scolded Jessica. "Can you just shut the fuck up?"
Some people giggled. Vivienne walked over to the woman. "Next time, just sit on her mouth — she'll shut right up."
Lux, standing aside, smirked. "Did you?"
"Not yet... just giving some advice," Vivienne whispered.
