Maya POV
"Maya!"
Two pairs of scattered footsteps brought my full attention to the cute pair running towards me. My younger siblings, Alex and Ella, wore huge smiles as they held their arms out. I crouched down and gave them a huge bear hug, engulfing them both in a warm embrace.
"How was the school trip?" I asked with a warm smile.
Ella beamed at me with a bright smile. "We went camping and hunted!"
My mood deflated a little, I wanted to be a part of their first ever hunt. However, their excited expressions completely lifted my mood. "That's great!"
"I missed you!" Alex mumbled into my arm.
Ella stuck her tongue out at him before tightening her hold on me. "I missed her more!"
I laughed at them, finding them adorable. "I missed you guys way more!"
After everything that has happened and the amount of work I had, I was really glad to have them back. They had only been gone a few days, but their presence made a big difference. The stressed feeling had slowly crept in when I began to think about the demon situation.
Their odd coloured eyes curiously held mine before they began to pout. "You feel funny." Alex noted, his young face showing concern for me.
Another one of their abilities due to the light gene was that they were able to sense emotions and feelings. It was a somewhat new ability that everyone is still trying to get used to.
"The word is 'stressed, Alex!" Ella exclaimed with a proud smile.
He stuck his tongue back at her and huffed at her smug face, earning a hair ruffle from me. "Okay guys, I'll play with you later. Go say hi to the others."
They skipped away from me, babbling to one another about random things. I watched them leave with a smile, barely noticing the familiar presence of my mate behind me.
"Your little siblings?"
He had crept up behind me, his curious gaze drawn to wear the twins were. I nodded at his assumption, confirming it. "Yeah, why didn't you say hi?"
He shrugged, looking a little sheepish. "When the time is right."
I gave him a deadpanned look before saying, "Lucio, they're only five."
He nodded slowly, taking that in. "You know, they don't act like it. They seem more intuitive than what's normal for their age."
I nodded with a chuckle, agreeing with him. "They are mature and smart for their age. They've developed quicker than their counterparts from school."
Which was likely due to their light gene, no doubt.
"You know I almost had a younger sibling..."
I turned my entire body, facing him completely. "What?"
Did his mother have a miscarriage? As though he had heard my thoughts, he then said flatly, "She didn't have a natural miscarriage. She died, so the unborn kid died with her."
I felt sick.
I watched the lack of emotion on his face, with the slightest feel of seriousness oozing from him. Horror and shock filled my system, that was one of the saddest occurrences I've ever heard. I clamped my hand over mouth to stop it from hanging so much.
I stood frozen in my spot, not knowing what to say.
He scratched the back of his neck sheepishly, sighing heavily. "Shit, I ruined the mood. I don't know why I told you that."
"No one knew your mother was pregnant." I whispered, watching his bleak expression. "But surely, people would have noticed..."
He put his hands in his pockets, casually leaning against the wall. "She wasn't that far ahead in the pregnancy, so it would've been hard to catch on. It was also too early to announce the pregnancy."
I shook my head, trying to ingest this new information. "Lucio, I'm so sorry."
His golden eyes momentarily narrowed at me before relaxing. "No, it's fine. It's not like you did it."
I hadn't missed the edge to his voice when he said that, making me tense up. "Lucio, don't tell me you still think that-."
"Honestly Maya, I don't know what to think. I believe you didn't have anything to with her death." He admitted genuinely. "But I can't say the same for your pack."
"In that case, you're referring to my parents." I clarified with an annoyed frown.
"I'm referring to all your former leaders." He shot back defensively.
"Well then, you should ask them yourself. When they have the time, interrogate them as much as you want. I'm sure you'll be satisfied with their answers."
Especially with that handy ability of yours.
He scoffed at my offer. "Maya, you know I can't do that. That would be a direct accusation of the murder of the former Luna of The BloodRose Clan, that is a big deal."
"And yet, you're fine with telling me." I said bluntly, raising an eyebrow. " The current Alpha of the pack you're so suspicious of."
He waved that off carelessly with a scoff. "That's because you're you, it's different."
I chose to ignore how my heart reacted to that comment and swiftly moved on. "Other than the fact I'm your mate, I still don't understand it. Regardless, I'll make it a point, this week, to ensure that you have talked to the former leaders."
He didn't argue with me, keeping quiet.
We started to walk towards my office. "How's Luca doing?" I asked curiously. It had been a few hours since I had last seen him in the hospital.
"He's still a bit freaked out and is contemplating on leaving sooner than planned." He responded with a frown. "Above everything, he seemed concerned about what Kyle thought of him."
I grimaced guiltily as I realised I hadn't explained to Kyle what had happened. "Ah, I'll let him know about what we found out soon. I arranged an emergency meeting tonight, by the way."
"Good idea."
Lucio hesitated a little before he snaked his arm around my shoulders and hugged me close. "We'll get to the bottom of this demon thing, I promise."
I smiled inwardly, relishing in his embrace.
Suddenly he stumbled back, losing balance a little.
"I need to sit down."
I glanced at his face, raising an eyebrow at his uneasy expression. "I don't feel too good, actually." He added with a frown, looking confused.
Not wasting another second, I helped him to the nearest seating area. "Are you tired?" I asked, concern trickling into voice.
He picked up on this and said, "A little, but I feel mostly fine. Don't worry."
"I am KING!"
Kyle's triumphant loud voice echoed through the mansion. "KING IS WHO? ME!"
"SHUT UP!" His father, Aiden, yelled from across the mansion. "WHY ARE YOU SO LOUD?"
Lucio's eyes widened at the ruckus, not at all used to the ruckus. "It's always damn loud in this house, every single day." He growled, rubbing his temples.
Kyle's presence got stronger and stronger. Here he comes, I internally thought in amusement.
"You should be grateful to be in my presence, Alpha boy." Kyle retorted as he made his way towards us. He wore a black hoodie with matching black joggers, paired with pristine white shoes.
His gaze softened when it rested on me. "How are you doing?"
I smiled at his concern and nodded. "I'm doing alright. I actually have to update you with something."
He tilted his head, curious to hear what I had to say. I explained what we had encountered when Lucio and I had gone to Luca's hospital room to confront him.
"Demon, huh." He whispered, his honey coloured eyes darkening. "So Luca, how is he doing?"
"He's leaving tonight actually." Lucio sighed, running his hand through his dark hair. "He's freaked out more than I thought, I guess."
Kyle nodded slowly, taking that in. "Alright, I get that. But why would a demon take over Luca just to do that to Maya, you'd think it'd do something else."
I shrugged at the same time Lucio frowned thoughtfully.
Kyle crossed his arms over each other, his honey coloured eyes swirling with suspicion. "Call it a hunch, but I don't think Luca is all that innocent."
Lucio shook his head at him, looking tired. "No, he was truthful when we interrogated him earlier."
Ah right, that lie-detecting ability. I made a mental note to ask him about that later.
Kyle raised an eyebrow at this, looking dubious. "I smell bias from you, Mr Alpha boy. How can you be so sure? Trust me, I want to believe you. Luca is a cool friend, but Maya is my best friend and Alpha so..."
"Just take my word for it. Believe me."
Kyle raised his hand dramatically to point at Lucio with a horrified expression. "I don't believe you, golden eyes!"
My mate sighed, giving up already.
Kyle cleared his throat awkwardly and stood up straight, before saying, "Okay, I'll be off."
He began to walk away, swiftly bringing his phone out. "I'll go visit Luca myself, right now." He added quietly.
Lucio stood up, wondering what he was up to.
Without looking back, Kyle raised his hand and said, "Calm down, Alpha boy, I won't hurt your brother. I'll just talk to him."
His serious tone had made me feel uneasy. However, Lucio looked satisfied with his explanation and began to make his way to the kitchen.
"Don't hurt him, Kyle. That's an order." I mind-linked him.
He cackled back in response, trailing into little giggles.
"I'm serious."
Brief pause.
"Okay, okay! I won't hurt him."
Feeling satisfied, I cut the telepathic channel and followed Lucio into the kitchen. He was taking a swing of water from a cold bottle, wearing an entertained smile.
"What's so funny?"
"As if Kyle could hurt Luca." He chuckled, his nose scrunching in amusement.
I stopped right in front of him and crossed my arms over each other. "I dunno, my Gamma is pretty strong. Scary strong. He'd be able to do a lot of damage, more than you'd think."
Lucio's smile slowly transitioned into an entertained smirk, holding my steely gaze. "Oh, is that so. Even against an Alpha blood?"
I thought about it seriously before nodding.
He chuckled deeply, taking a step closer and closing the distance. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders, engulfing me in a warm hug. "Interesting." He muttered lowly.
"Maya." I heard my mother call. "I'll be at the training grounds if you need me."
Lucio's grip on my shoulders tightened suddenly. I waited for her to come into view. Her long wavy hair was surrounding her small frame, as she absently fixed a strap from her warrior gear. "Your father and I will make it to the meeting later, I'll see you then."
Her grey eyes softened at Lucio embracing me close to him before she frowned. "Lucio sweetie, are you okay?"
I looked up at Lucio to see his blood-red eyes had made an appearance. Feeling confused, I brought a hand up to his face and patted it. "Hey, snap out of it."
In split second, I was thrown across the room and hit a pillar before I had time to register what was happening.
I saw the blurred image of Lucio lunging towards my mother as he snarled viciously. Due to catching her off guard, he managed to take her down before she kicked him off. A maniacal, amused laugh erupted from him.
It sounded foreign, it didn't belong to him.
"It had been two whole decades, darling!" He exclaimed, a wide smile forming on his face. "I've missed ya!"
Two decades?
What?
I quickly recovered from the shock and confusion, ignoring the pain in my chest, and zoomed across the marble-tiled floor. I lunged towards Lucio, not hesitating in tackling him down and grabbing his neck. He thrashed under me, grimacing from the pressure on his airway, his red eyes still fixated on my mother. I was struggling to keep him down, he was so strong.
Too strong.
I gritted my teeth together, staring down at my bloodthirsty mate. I squeezed his trapezius muscles, with all my strength, and yelled, "What the fuck do you think you're doing? Are you mad?"
My mother slowly stood up from behind me, her angry eyes fixated on my mate. "Why did you do that?"
A loud snarl ripped from his throat when she spoke, making me angrily tighten my grip. Worry began to flood into my system, he was totally fine not too long ago. I looked into his crazed blood-red eyes, which looked out of focus, yet still trained on my mother's figure.
"Oh no." I heard her whisper.
I had barely managed to look up to see the disbelief and dread etched onto her face, as she moved towards him. Like I had thought, he must be possessed by that demon.
"He's possessed, isn't he?"
I didn't need a confirmation to know, however, I couldn't help but ask.
Lucio had let out a string of deranged laughter, sounded deeply entertained. "Maya, oh, sweet Maya. Your life is as good as over, my love."
Fear and terror had frozen my body. I stared at the face of my mate, who also wasn't him. My grip had loosened, allowing him to slip out of my hold. I let him, knowing my mother would be able to deal with him.
He stood with an overly relaxed posture, wearing a lazy smile. His intense gaze was curious, resting only upon my mother. She was frozen, her eyes blazing with fury. However, I noticed her stance had changed.
I recognised the famous stance and glare.
She was getting ready to kill.
"My darling Elisia, how you have grown." He drawled with a grin. He paused to think before his grin widened even more. "Oh, how is that mate of yours? Still alive? What was his name...Theo?"
I tried to stand back up but staggered from distress, worry, and confusion. "Mum, don't hurt Lucio."
She hadn't even acknowledged my words. "It's you." She snarled, her teeth lengthening. "It's really you? You're the demon messing with my pack?"
Does she know this demon?
Her dangerous growls rippled through the air, sending involuntary shudders through us both. Hurried footsteps had interrupted the tension building in the air, it belonged to Aiden, Kyle's father.
He looked between us warily, picking on the high tension atmosphere. "What's wrong? I'm getting angry Alpha vibes, it's freaking me out, man. Cut it out, the house cat ran away because of you guys."
We had a cat?
As though he felt the demon's presence, his body stiffened suddenly. "What the hell is that?" He growled, staring at Lucio's figure. "Elisia?"
"He is back."
It only took those two words for Aiden to understand, a grave expression had befallen upon his, normally cheerful, face.
"WHO THE HELL IS THAT?" I yelled in frustration.
It was like they didn't want to believe this was happening.
"I would be more than happy to tell you who I am." The demon chuckled, contorting Lucio's face to grin gleefully. "Listen carefully, Elisia's daughter."
He paused, his red-blood eyes shining incredibly. "They call me Darkness."
