The Hunter's Empire

Northern Border

"Finally!" Kyle exclaimed, digging into his ice cream.

Ivy and I watched him scoff down his dessert, not sure if he was referring to his food or the fact that a date for the meeting was officialised. It took both packs two weeks to decide on a date to meet, it was necessary to find a time when every necessary person was available.

I also would've thought that texting each other would make the process a lot easier. However, I was gravely mistaken. He was the worst replier I have ever come across in my life. You would think that he would be more interactive since this alliance was important to him.

The one word that can perfectly describe the past two weeks would be, frustrating. It looked like I wasn't wrong to dislike him.

However, despite all this, we had finally settled on a date, time and location.

We were going to travel to their pack tomorrow, and will be going through the contract the day after. Annoyingly, Lucio was currently in my state but claims that he cannot make it to my pack. I didn't understand why he couldn't visit, it would've saved him from a lot of hassle.

"I want some too!" Ella cried out, her eyes fixated on Kyle's ice cream. Her head just managed to reach the table, the dessert perfectly in her line of vision. We were all in the manor's back garden, enjoying the little free time we had.

Kyle's light brown eyes darkened, getting serious all of a sudden. "This one's mine, get your own. You little sh-."

Ivy smacked the back of his head, making him cry out in pain. "Don't talk to a five year old like that!"

Kyle pouted that he was getting told off. "Maya, control your baby siblings. They're always after my food."

"That's because you're always eating." I deadpanned, rolling my eyes.

"I'm not a baby, I'm a big girl now!" Ella complained, crossing her small arms.

Ivy crouched down to Ella's level, and smiled. "I'll get you some ice cream, where's your brother?"

"He's watching the fighter...warrior people train, again." She responded, hugging my knee. "Maya?"

"Yeah?" I responded, ruffling her hair.

I only had two siblings and they were both younger than me. Ella's brother was also her twin, a cheeky boy named Alexander. Both of them were named after our grandparents, Alex was the name of our mother's father and Ella was our father's mother's name.

They both inherited my mother's chestnut brown, wavy hair whereas I had my father's raven black coloured hair. I inherited my mother's grey eyes, although mine was darker. The twins' eye colour was a shock for anyone who saw it; one was dark blue and the other was grey.

Heterochromia wasn't a common trait within werewolves so it was a surprise to everyone. People named Alex and Ella the 'Odd Eyed Twins', a name that my parents did not approve of. Neither did I, but the twins seemed to like the nickname.

However, they were only five. They may grow up to hate it, so I'm doing my best to ensure people didn't call them that.

"Oh, he's coming!" Ella told us, her eyes looking hazy.

I thought unusual abilities were only reserved for my mother and I, until they were born. Although, their abilities were a lot different to mine. They can pinpoint the exact location of each other and feel each other's feelings.

I had a feeling they'll develop more unusual abilities as they grow up, as I have. Only the leading families, Beta family and Gamma family, knew about our secret. We agreed that it wasn't wise to spread this information, it wouldn't benefit us at all.

My mother had something called the Light Gene, which enabled her to surpass werewolf strength and speed. She can also see when someone is guaranteed certain death, to which she describes as a moving shadow. Unfortunately, no one knows the origin of The Light Gene.

My mother had activated it at nineteen years old, when she was facing impossible enemies. One was a half breed of werewolf and demon, who went by the name of Darkness. The other was his father, named Satanevos, a full demon as well as the creator of the werewolf species. He cursed an entire continent of humans, creating monsters that painfully shifted into werewolves every full moon.

The story of how my parents fought for their lives and their people was incredible and inspiring. Even though I have supposedly surpassed them in combat level, they'll always be my role model.

It became known that I had inherited the Light Gene, when I activated it at the age of five; just like Ella and Alex. I was overwhelmingly more strong and faster than my peers, to which everyone assumed was due to my Alpha blood.

My father always reminded me to strengthen my body and mind, so that I didn't need to depend on them so much. As I grew, more amazing abilities appeared for me to develop on. I worked extremely hard to ensure I can utilize it for battle, and my hard work had definitely paid off.

I suddenly flinched hard, feeling a cold sensation run down my back. A mental image of the northern border appeared in my mind, rippling as though it had been disturbed. This was just one of my useful abilities.

"The borders." I spoke up with a frown. "Something is not right."

Just as I said that, the lead border warrior mind-linked me. "Alpha, there's a disturbance near the northern border. A fight amongst werewolves and rogues has been reported. We're currently investigating it more, although it seems to be happening just outside our border"

"What pack do the werewolves belong to?"

"We don't know yet."

"Okay. Investigate thoroughly, please." I told her. "Update me frequently."

I sighed heavily, pulling my long hair into a sleek pony tail. "The northern border has been-."

"Infiltrated?" Ivy exclaimed, cutting me off. "Oh, fuck! Not again."

"No, not infiltrated. No one can get past those warriors, now that security is even stricter. The northern border has been disturbed, there is a fight happening apparently."

"A fight?" Kyle repeated, his nose scrunching up. "Who would fight right outside our borders? They should take it elsewhere."

I shrugged in response. "I don't know too much about it, but I'll be getting updates."

"Alpha, we can't identify the werewolves." The lead warrior mind linked me.

"What the hell does that mean?" I questioned in confusion.

"Their scent is unfamiliar, unidentifiable. But they aren't rogues."

I frowned in thought, this was a peculiar case. However, there was a chance that those werewolves belong to Lucio's pack, since he was currently in the state. I let out a low growl, what was the meaning of this? Why have a damn fight near my territory?

"I'm coming." I told her with a sigh. "It is northern border - point B, right?"

"Um, yeah." She replied, surprised that I got it right.

"For now don't interfere with the fight. If it progresses to the point where you need to take action, mind link me first."

I didn't want anyone to make one wrong move against BloodRose Clan members. They were a powerful ally, one that I couldn't afford to lose. That is, if those werewolves were from the BloodRose Clan.

"If I think it is who I think it is, they are important personnel. Do not make any rash moves, that is an order."

"Yes, Alpha." She responded, before cutting the connection.

I brought my phone out, clicking onto the chat with Lucio. I sent him a message, asking whether it was him near my border. I followed that text with a demand, wondering why him and his people were so close to my territory.

"I need you two to come with me." I told Ivy and Kyle, who were already standing up. I looked down at Ella to tell her, "You and Alex can go upstairs and play on my iPad, does that sound great?"

They both loved to watch a specific cartoon series that I had downloaded for them.

She nodded excitedly, already running to fetch our brother. "See you later!"

"So, is anyone bothered to shift?" I asked out loud. We already let our wolves out earlier in the day to hunt, they should be tired from all that activity.

We hurried towards the garage, where our cars were currently parked.

"So, what's the situation?" Kyle asked seriously, bringing out his keys. His black vehicle beeped and flashed its lights, using the keys to open it. He slid into the driver's seat and turned the engine on.

I glanced to the back seats, checking to see if we had all of our weapons.

"The werewolves couldn't be identified, so I'm thinking that maybe they could be BloodRose clan members." I explained thoughtfully, getting into the passenger seat. "I ordered them to not make any rash actions."

"Ah, I forgot that Lucio was visiting our state." Ivy chuckled before frowning. "Wait, do you think they were ambushed?"

I shrugged at that thought, it had also crossed my mind. "Possibly. We will aid them, if that is the case. The destination is northern border, point B."

Kyle's eyes narrowed, switching gears. "Let's go."

We speeded towards the northern border, reaching the area in a matter of thirty minutes. The presence of the rogues and unfamiliar wolves aggravated my wolf, they were all considered unwanted visitors.

"Alpha, they're getting too close to the border. Your orders?" A border warrior aske, mind-linking me.

"Are they hostile? I need your observation." I responded back, telling Kyle to drive faster.

"I think not, Alpha." He responded, sounding unsure.

"Your uncertainty is not helpful, I need you to be sure." I told him firmly. "I've reached the northern border, but still far from point B. I'm counting on your analysis."

If I misunderstood the situation, my pack's safety would be compromised. In a time where people are set on bringing The Hunter's Empire down, one mistake can be fatal.

"They are no signs of their hostility towards us. They're completely ignoring us."

I clenched my jaw in frustration, I hated that I wasn't sure on what was happening. I brought my phone out to check if Lucio had replied. Of course he hadn't, not that I was really expecting him to. I glanced out the window to see that we were extremely close to point B.

"Sword." I ordered, putting a hand out.

Ivy leaned forward from the back seat and handed over my trusty silver sword. It was in it's decorative black case, attached to my belt. I put it on effortlessly, completely accustomed to it's heaviness.

"Machete."

Ivy handed over a silver machete, the weapon that's always attached to my hand. Without giving my friends a heads up, I opened the car door and jumped out.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS SHE DOING?" Kyle yelled, watching me tuck and roll onto the ground. He was driving at ninety miles per hour, his shock was understandable.

"I'll get there faster on foot." I mind-linked them both. "We're so close now. I'll meet you there."

"See you, Maya." Ivy chuckled, immune to my insanity.

"You are crazy, woman!"  Kyle exclaimed in horror, before cutting the connection.

I sprinted towards point B, feeling the wind rush and hit my skin. My eyes were trained onto the path in front of me, feeling myself cover an unimaginable distance in a short period of time. The foul, gut churning stench of rogues got stronger, making me pull a disgusted face.

"Alpha, we-." A warrior mind-linked me.

"I'm here, tell me when I reach you."

My gaze steadied upon the dense trees, spotting my border force warriors as I arrived at point B.

"Alpha Maya is here!" I heard a few shout.

I spirited towards them, reaching them in no time. "Hello everyone."

They slightly bowed their heads, before updating me. "The werewolves with the unfamiliar scent had spoken to us, as they fought the rogues. They said they had no intention in harming us or our pack, and that their presence by our territory was coincidental."

I nodded at that, walking towards the fight. "I see. Did they tell you which pack they belonged to?"

"The conversation couldn't carry on with all the fighting."

Grunts and clashes of silver weapons echoed throughout the air, indicating there was a fight present. The werewolves and rogues finally came into view, giving me a chance to assess the situation.

For the fighting to have gone on this long, only tells me that their strength is equal. I noticed wary glances from both sides as they felt an Alpha's presence. I scoffed at their uneasiness, who said they could use my borders as their fighting ground?

I glanced back to see ten warriors behind me, before looking forward once again. "I give you permission to eradicate the rogues. Assist the werewolves." I commanded, watching the horror on the rogues faces.

They expected us to not intervene.

Unfortunately for them, they were now outnumbered.

The warriors wasted no time in carrying out my order, killing the rogues. I watched them from the side lines, admiring my warriors skills. They didn't need my help, they were definitely capable enough.

The six unfamiliar werewolves slumped to the ground in exhaustion, watching their opponents be taken down. Relief and easiness etched their faces, as they tried to catch their breath.

I began to walk towards them, before a warrior stopped me. "We don't know who they are yet, please be cautious, Alpha."

I held up a hand and smiled at her. I remembered her, she was a newly qualified border warrior. "Don't worry about me, I can handle them."

She frowned restlessly, glancing at the werewolves. "But there is six of them."

My anger peaked just a little, thinking that she was underestimating her Alpha. I calmed down after reasoning that she was only concerned for my safety.

"Exactly, only six wolves." I nodded with a smirk, patting her shoulder. I walked away from her, as her jaw dropped by my relaxed demeanour.

Bless her, she was young and new. She definitely hadn't seen me fight, or doubt wouldn't have ever crossed her mind.

I walked until I was a couple meters away from them. "Hello strangers." I greeted them, with a neutral stance. Their eyes were trained on the huge silver weapon in my hand.

"I'm just here to talk. I will not attack, I give you my word." I told them solemnly.

Their distrustful stares slowly turned into neutral ones.

"Hi. So you're the Alpha of this place, huh." One of them spoke up. "Our appearance by your territory is purely coincidental, we thought the rogues randomly led us here."

Another nodded and carried on. "Once we realised we were fighting on a pack's border, we were convinced you would attack us, along with the rogues. We never imagined you would help us, especially since we're not an American pack."

Maybe that was what the rogues were counting on?

"You guys are warriors of The BloodRose Clan, correct?" I questioned them, my eyes taking in their condition.

Their eyes narrowed slightly before nodding.

"You are currently on The New Dawn's Pack border." I told them, understanding that they were clueless about who I was. "I am currently on friendly terms with your Alpha, that's the only reason why I intervened."

Or else, I wouldn't have given a damn whether they died or not.

Their eyes widened as they recognised the name as the most powerful pack in this country.

"Where is your Alpha?" I asked, wondering why they were alone.

"Most of the rogues were after him, so he separated from us to give us...a chance." One answered shamefully, looking down. "These rogues weren't like normal ones, it was so weird. Your warriors were able to kill them because they exhausted themselves."

I raised an eyebrow at them. "Is that so?"

Sensing my disbelief, another spoke up. "We are the Alpha's personal warriors, do you really think we couldn't take on ordinary rogues?" She growled, looking irritated.

My eyes were trained on the annoyed werewolf, looking for a lie. She had a good point, warriors of the most powerful pack in the world should be able to take on rogues. And yet, they struggled against these ones.

I glanced at the bodies on the ground, maybe they were different...?

"Discard the bodies, except one." I ordered, crossing my arms. "Bring one to the morgue, we'll run an autopsy."

I sighed, looking down at the werewolves. What should I do with them?

I smiled once I felt Ivy and Kyle's presence. "What took you so long?" I called out in amusement.

"I accidently ran over a rabbit, and Ivy was adamant in burying it." Kyle mumbled in annoyance, stepping by my side. "She threatened to eat my food, if I didn't pull over."

Of course.

Ivy stood by my right, and grinned at me. "Sorted everything out?"

"Almost." I told her, nodding at the werewolves. "They are BloodRose Clan members. They got separated by their Alpha and have had to deal with these rogues. They claim the rogues' were possibly modified to have greater strength and speed."

Kyle took a double take at this. "Genetically modified rogues?"

We all looked at Kyle, feeling unsettled by his suggestion. "Possibly."

"Have you contacted your Alpha?" I asked them, referring to mind-linking. "He should be done with those rogues by now, regardless of their ability."

"Obviously, we contacted him. He lured away forty five, abnormally strong rogues. Alpha Lucio is incredible, but that's still a lot for him to deal with."

Forty five rogues? That is difficult for one person to deal with, regardless of strength. Numbers can overpower strength.

I clenched my fists slowly, my mood darkening. "Then, why the hell are you here and not with him?"

They tried not to flinch at the waves of anger emitting from me. I glared down at them, how could they call themselves an Alpha's warrior?

"He ordered us to not help him." One responded with a heavy sigh. "We can't go against his orders, no matter what."

I slowly brought my hand up, barely holding in my anger. Everyone, including my friends,  shuffled back in wariness as they watched my hand. I brought my hand to my head and silently  held it with frustration.

Why would Lucio try to handle all those rogues? What is he trying to prove? He should work with his warriors, that's why they freaking travelled with him. Why order them to stay back? Is he dumb?

"Your Alpha is a-."

"BLAH BLAH BLAH!" Kyle suddenly shouted, cutting me off. Nervously glancing at the angered werewolves, before sending me a warning glare.

"We're supposed to be friendly with these people. We need this alliance, Maya. I agree that this Alpha is fucking foolish, but control your anger." He mind-linked me, sounding stern.

"You had the wrong idea." I said to Kyle out loud, waving him off with a smile. "I was going to say that their Alpha is a great leader."

Ivy casually turned around, and left our conversation to help our warriors.

"If I stayed, I would've bursted into laughter. I could barely hold it in." She told us through the mind-link, laughing in between her words. "Great leader my ass, what kind of cover up is that?"

"He values his warrior's lives, and puts his before anyone elses. I admire that." I carried on, lying through my teeth. "My anger was directed towards the rogues and the mess they've created, so don't misunderstand."

"Nice." Kyle commented with a chuckle.

They visibly relaxed, accepting my lie. "That's alright, we're pretty annoyed with them too. They've been messing with us for way too long."

"I invite you to stay in my territory until your Alpha comes to fetch you." I told them. "However, you will be thoroughly searched before you step foot in my grounds. I will also trust you to update him on what had happened. Any objections?"

"Fine by us." One said, speaking for the group.
