The Somerton Man

Opening

chuotluoibieng

Grey Baron set foot in Somerton, a small town nestled on the western edge of Adelaide, carrying with him two suitcases—and a quiet, glimmering hope for a new beginning. He was just seventeen, a Year 11 student, with deep black eyes that held the quiet light of the East—eyes that once reflected the misty alleyways of Hanoi, the city where he was born and raised.

In the early years of his life, Grey lived a simple yet peaceful existence in Vietnam—a land rich with the aroma of sizzling street food, vibrant festivals, and nights filled with the soft hum of motorbikes blending into the breeze. But that peace unraveled when his parents decided to move him to Australia—partly for his education and partly for reasons Grey had never fully understood.

At first, the plan was for him to live with his aunt in Adelaide. But after less than a semester, the clash of lifestyles, habits, and temperaments turned their relationship tense. Meals grew colder under prolonged silence; arguments that seemed minor snowballed into an ever-widening distance. Grey, quiet yet resilient, packed his bags and moved out on his own into a small apartment just a few bus stops from school.

Living independently was far from easy. He had to learn how to manage expenses, cook, study—and at times, endure loneliness. In a foreign country with a harsher climate, a language heavy with subtext, and social circles guarded by unspoken codes, it wasn't easy to find belonging. Yet, it was in that solitude that Grey began to discover himself in ways he never had before.

Along the way, he met strange companions—some like sunlight, some like fog, and some... shadows that defied explanation. Then, as if guided by fate, he stumbled upon an old case buried in time and sand: the mystery of the Somerton Man.

The very beach where he walked each chilly afternoon, where waves crashed against stone like a long, melancholic lullaby, was the same place where the body of an unidentified man was once found—with a slip of paper that read "Tamám Shud" in his pocket and a mystery that had lingered unsolved for over seventy years. The case had never been explained. In Somerton, everyone seemed to have their own version of the story—as if it were legend or a silent curse drifting on the sea breeze.

Grey didn't know why he was drawn to it. Maybe it was the nameless gaze of the dead man that haunted his dreams. Or maybe, it was the quiet realization: sometimes, the dead don't seek justice... they seek to be heard.

And so, Grey's journey began. A journey not only to uncover the truth behind a death from 1948 but to understand himself—a boy from the East swept between two cultures, two worlds.
No one had warned him that the deeper he dug, the closer he came to uncovering something far more than truth, something that might leave his life hanging by a thread on a barren branch in a windless season.
