18.
Morning came
Sol A woke up looking more exhausted than usual because she had drunk quite a lot the night before. During Professor Han’s lecture, she tried to focus for a while but then laid her head on the desk. Knowing she was hungover, Professor Han let her rest. When class ended, everyone started leaving.
Bok Gi: How about we just let Sol A sleep here, when she wakes up she can go back herself.
Joon Hwi: I’m afraid she’ll be upset.
Ye Sul: I don’t think she will.
So everyone left without waking her up.
One hour later
Professor Han came back to get his lesson plan he had forgotten. When he entered the room, he saw Sol A still sleeping, so he quietly walked to her desk.
“Sol A, Sol A.”
“Nae, nae.” She stood up reflexively. Professor Han stood by her side smiling.
“What’s wrong? Why are you still here?”
“Everyone’s gone already, professor?”
“Umm.”
“Why didn’t you wake me up when I fell asleep in your class?”
“I saw you looked tired, so I didn’t want to. But do you want me to go over today’s lecture again? It’s important for the exam.”
“Really?”
Instead of replying, Professor Han sat down beside her. She was surprised he didn’t keep his distance but didn’t think too much about it. He began explaining the lesson again while she listened closely, the distance between them gradually narrowing.
“That’s all for today’s lecture.”
“Thank you so much, professor.”
“No need to thank me. Just pay me back when you get a high score.”
“How should I pay you back?”
“Just be my drinking buddy.”
“That’s all?”
“Umm.”
“Then I’ll go now. Be careful on your way back.”
“Umm, go ahead.”
Two weeks later
It was exam day. Sol A and all the law students had been busy for two weeks preparing for it. Everyone gathered at the entrance hall waiting to enter.
“Students, please enter the exam room and sit according to your seat numbers!”
One hour passed, no one had finished yet. Time was counting down. Sol A finally completed her test, but right then she fainted. Professor Han happened to be walking by, saw her collapse, and immediately rushed into the classroom, carrying her to the hospital despite the shocked looks from everyone. She had collapsed due to low blood sugar caused by long-term lack of sleep from studying.
“Are you her guardian?”
“Nae.”
“Her condition isn’t too serious. It’s due to prolonged lack of sleep leading to low blood sugar. Once she wakes up, she can be discharged.”
“Nae, kamsamita.”
Two hours later
“You’re awake?”
“The exam…”
“Don’t worry, you completed it right before fainting. I already reported it to the school.”
“Jinjja?”
“Nae.”
“Do you want to eat something?”
“You’ll buy for me?”
“Umm.”
“Then take me for beef soup.”
“You sure know how to pick.”
“Hehehe.”
Professor Han took her to a beef soup restaurant near the hospital. She was visibly excited and couldn’t hide her smile.
After eating, it was already late, so he drove her back to the dorm.
“Did you do well on the test?”
“Yes, professor.”
“That’s good. But remember, your health matters more than exams. Don’t let something like today happen again, okay?”
“Nae.”
“Go in now, it’s late. You still have class tomorrow.”
“Nae, drive safe.”
One week later
Sol A went to school as usual. Professor Han came into class with an announcement.
“Well, today our class has some big news.”
“What news, professor?”
“Your exam results are out.”
The class immediately pulled out their phones. Everyone seemed disappointed because their scores weren’t as high as expected.
“Quiet down, everyone. Our class has one student who got a perfect score.”
“Who is it?”
“Guess.”
“Seung Jae?”
“Ani.”
“It’s Sol A.”
“Omo, omo, jinjja?”
“Nae.”
“Congratulations! Professor Yang would be so proud if he knew.”
“Nae.”
After class, Sol A texted Professor Yang to tell him the result.
“I got 100 points in your subject.”
“Come back soon, I miss you already.”
While texting, Professor Han suddenly appeared behind her, making her hurriedly put her phone away.
“So, where do you want to eat today?”
“Let’s go for barbecue.”
“Alright.”
She brought him to the same barbecue restaurant she used to go with Professor Yang.
“Two bottles of soju, please.”
“You planning to drink until you’re drunk?”
“It’s fine, I have a high tolerance.”
“Let’s see who gets drunk first.”
They grilled meat and drank together. By the third bottle, Sol A had already collapsed on the table.
“Yaa Sol A, so much for high tolerance!”
“Yaaaaa.”
Worried she wouldn’t make it to class tomorrow, Professor Han helped her back to the dorm. On the way, she kept rambling nonsense, making him laugh the whole time. Suddenly she said something that made him stop in his tracks.
“I really like you, professor. I like you so much.”
But she was so drunk she mistook him for Professor Yang.
“You really like me?”
“Nae.”
Before he could respond, she kissed him. Unable to resist, he kissed her back, until suddenly a man came and pulled him away, punching him hard.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“Professor…”
It was Professor Yang. He said nothing more, just went over and carried the half-drunk Sol A away.
“Professor Yang, you’re back. I missed you so much.”
He brought her to his own place, laid her gently on the bed. She clutched his hand tightly, refusing to let go, so he lay down beside her. Though her eyes remained closed, tears rolled down her cheeks.
“You’re back… I missed you so much.”
Professor Yang stroked her face and kissed her forehead softly.
“What on earth is happening to you…”
To be continued.
