(250) Many say that equipping parents with parenting skills is an optimum choice to drive down the rate of juvenile delinquency. Although I agree that parental skills are important, I do not think that they are the best way to reduce youth crime.

There are reasons why people consider parenting skills the best option. These skills embrace the ability to listen and empathise, which can keep the child away from evil thoughts. For example, if a boy can confide to their parents that he starts to have sexual curiosity, he can get advice on ways to deal with sexual urges. This may help him avoid committing sexual offences. In addition, parental skills also include the ability to maintain a healthy relationship with partners or spouses. This is important as juvenile delinquency is often linked to dysfunctional families.

However, I do not believe that teaching parents parental skills is the best way to reduce youth crime. Many parents already struggle with a myriad of responsibilities and do not have enough time with their children. Without time, even the best parental skills can become rusty due to the lack of practice. Moreover, social and voluntary work is a more inclusive way to prevent youth crime since it includes orphans and homeless youth. For these people, the suggested solution becomes useless because they do not have or live with their parents in the first place.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly believe that parenting skills are important; nevertheless, there are better ways to prevent juvenile delinquency.
