Coming home from school, the child could not find her mother anywhere. A sense of unease crept into her heart. She looked in the kitchen and living room, but there was still no sign of her mother. Finally, she found her mother sitting in the backyard. Before the girl could share the joy of her perfect score in Mathematics, she noticed tears streaming down her mother's face. The girl's heart mirrored the sadness she saw.

Gently approaching her mother, the child asked timidly, "Mommy, why are you crying?"

Her mother's eyes were red and swollen. Instinctively, the child reached out to wipe away the tears.

"Let me wipe them for you..."

"SLAP!"

Before the child could finish her sentence, she received a stinging slap. The pain in her heart was far greater than the red mark left on her cheek. It was the first time her mother had hit her that hard, leaving the child's mind in turmoil: "What's wrong, Mommy? Don't you love me anymore?"

"Leave me alone!"

Her mother's angry eyes met her concerned ones. The little child could only caress her cheek to ease the pain. Tears welled up in her eyes despite her efforts to hold them back. She ran to her room, hugged her teddy bear, and cried, "Teddy, what did I do wrong again?"

In response to her question, Teddy's black eyes seemed to hold a deep sorrow as if saying, "Arima, don't cry. I'm always here for you!"

It was the initial instance she experienced physical harm from a loved one. This single event seemed to trigger a significant transformation within her. Previously characterized by a warm and kind-hearted nature, she noticeably withdrew and became apathetic towards everything.

It was also the day her father left, the day her eyes took on a deep sadness that would stay with her until she grew up. And from that day on, Arima unknowingly became the target of her mother's anger whenever she thought of her husband.

Children changed when family circumstances changed. And this was what formed Arima's persistent indifference.
