It was 3:00 AM, and Christine was wide awake, unable to stop thinking about her ex-boyfriend, Ash. They had broken up five months ago, but she could not shake the feeling that they were to be together. Christine had been through this too many times before, but this time was different because she came across the song "3:00 AM" by Finding Hope. There were so many things that she could relate to in this song.
"Baby it's 3:00 AM
Had you on my mind
And it's not the first time we've gone through this
Wanting you more and more
I can't help but think of what we could be
Baby, if I could tell you, if I could tell you
How much I care
I'm in despair
Are you still there?
Just tell me how we can make this work
How we can make this work."
Surrounded by pillows, Christine lay in bed, gazing at the white ceiling above. Her mind was full of thoughts of what could have been if she and Ash had managed to stay together. Ash was who she had always felt a deep connection with, but their busy schedules and lack of time had led them to part ways.
Frustrated by her thoughts, Christine reached for her phone and began scrolling through the old messages with Ash. The familiar conversations flooded back to her. Each of those was a reminder of the moments they had shared. As she read through them, a wave of emotions rose within her, and she could not help but feel a sharp pain in her chest as she thought about how much she had cared for him.
Her emotions ran high, and Christine's heart was heavy with desperation. She reached out to Ash, her fingers shaking as she typed a message, pouring out her deepest feelings. With every word, she expressed her unwavering love for him and her burning desire to reignite their relationship. After mustering up the courage, she pressed the send button and clutched her phone tightly, waiting with bated breath for a response.
While Christine anxiously longed for Ash's reply, time seemed to stretch out endlessly. Her heart was pounding so loudly in her chest that she could barely hear anything else. Unable to resist, Christine kept checking her phone every few seconds, hoping to see a message from Ash. Finally, the sound of a new message beeped, and Christine's heart leaped in her chest as she quickly opened it. She read Ash's response with breathless anticipation, her eyes scanning the screen as she took in every word. When she realized he felt the same way, her heart was flooded with relief and pure joy, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of exhilaration wash over her.
Ash and Christine relished the following days, their minds fully absorbed in profound discussions, reminiscing about old memories and updating each other on all the events they had missed. Ash even told Christine about the hard times he had missed her desperately. He once had sat in his old armchair, staring out the window as the rain poured harshly. The sounds of raindrops tapping against the glass had brought back memories of his time with her. He remembered how they had met in college when both were studying literature. They had been drawn to each other's love of books and quickly became inseparable. Ash said he always felt like he could be himself around Christine. They had spent many evenings discussing their favorite authors and sharing their writing. Then, he said, with a sad tone, "After graduation, we moved to the city together, each pursuing their passions. You became a successful editor while I published his first novel. However, as our careers took off, we found ourselves growing apart. We spent less time together, and our conversations became superficial. One day, you left. I never knew why you left or where you went. I was left alone with nothing but the memories of our time together. The sound of the rain brought back those memories, which were both good and bad."
Ash remembered the day they spent walking through the park, hand in hand, as the autumn leaves fell around them. He remembered the night they spent watching the stars from his rooftop, wrapped in a blanket. He also did not forget the arguments, the tears, and the harsh words they exchanged.
He continued, "But despite everything, I could not help but feel a twinge of longing for you, Christine. I missed your laughter, wit, and intelligence. I missed the way you had made me feel alive. I even wondered if you had ever thought of me and if you missed me back. As the rain subsided, I realized it was time to let go of the past. I couldn't keep living in my memories and hoping you would return. I knew I had to move on and create new memories with new people. I stood up from my armchair, took a deep breath, and walked towards the door. I thought it was time to take a chance on the future and let the past be just that - the past."
Christine spoke up, "Really? Was it what you felt? Gosh! I was so bad. You must have gone through a lot and had better memories than while you were with me. Did I mess up this time? Did I hurt you again?"
"No, you did not. It's great. I swear. After seeing your message, I suddenly felt on cloud nine. I used to try dating apps, but no one made me feel the same as you."
"You are still that sweet. But I want to know the truth, Ash. Please tell me about the hurt I left in you."
"If you said so. Well... The only time you hurt and left a wound in me was when you disappeared without saying anything. Can I know the reason?"
"Oh, it was all my fault. I had an emergency meeting and had to fly to Paris immediately. I wanted to tell you, but we were falling apart and on the verge of breaking up. Hence, I hesitated. Furthermore, the long flight made me fall asleep quickly. Arrived in Paris, I was flooded with deadlines and a busy schedule. It may sound like an excuse, but I forgot to call you due to being up to my ears in working."
"I see. But you could not be busy all the time, right?"
"When I had free time, it was a week later. So I felt nervous and did not dare call or text you. I thought you must have been angry and have not wanted to talk to me after all I did."
"I was. But the frustration only lasted for two days. I was worried so much about you, Christine."
"You do know how to make me feel guilty. Can you please tell me how I can make up for you?" Christine appealed.
"You know... There is one thing I want from you now. Can you share it with me despite how hard it is?" Ash showed a naughty smirk.
"Yes! Of course! Just tell me!" Christine rushed him to answer.
"We haven't shared a kiss for a long time, haven't we?" Ash blinked.
"HEY!!" Christine was staggered.
"It's because you said yes first! Regret?"
"Haha! I get it. You are still so humourous, and it's funny, right?"
"Oh, is it too far? Am I bothering you?" Ash quickly changed his tone and mood.
"Nah. It is just too fast. You understand, right?" Christine smiled radiantly to calm him down.
"Phew! I only hope I won't hurt you anymore. Can we be even now?"
"Like always. But we need more time to be that close a gain, right?"
"I can't agree with you more!" Ash laughed cheerfully.
"It's enough for sadness. Let's chat about something else, shall we?"
"My pleasure."
Then, the number of the topics they talked about increased rapidly. They talked through the night as if they did not want to waste any moments like they used to.
Their later conversations were going great, and they could sense a closer connection forming between them with every passing second. They both came to a mutual decision to give their relationship another chance despite the mistakes they had made in the past. This time, they were determined to learn from their old mistakes and make things work.
As they strolled along, their hands tightly clasped. They looked deep into each other's eyes, feeling a sense of wholeness and belonging that they had never experienced before. Both of them were aware they could not imagine their lives without each other and were willing to do whatever it took to make their relationship work.
Christine lay in bed, the soft light from the lamp casting a warm glow over the room. She turned to her side, gazing at Ash sleeping peacefully by her. Her heart swelled with gratitude and happiness as she reminisced about the fateful night she sent that one message. It was a message that brought them back together, reigniting the spark they thought had been lost forever. That one message had changed their lives in ways they could have never imagined. They knew the future would be unpredictable, but they would try every possible way not to fall apart again.
"'Cuz baby, if I find a way, I'm sure of it this love won't stray
Just give me a chance to say I love you
And I need you now
Are you here to stay or fade away like every other day?
You're the reason that I lie awake."
