Dustin had never been a big fan of pop music. He had gone out of his way to avoid it at all costs. But one day, something strange happened. As he was walking down the street, he heard a song that caught his attention. It was catchy, well-produced, and had a certain charm that he couldn't quite put his finger on. It wasn't until he got home, looked up the lyrics, and realized he had accidentally stumbled upon "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber. Unbeknownst to him, the unexpected encounter with the renowned pop sensation would significantly impact his life. The encounter had a deep resonance with his current turbulent relationship, and it would go on to alter the course of his life in ways he never could have imagined.
"For all the times that you rained on my parade
And all the clubs you get in using my name
You think you broke my heart, oh girl, for goodness' sake
You think I'm cryin' on my own, well, I ain't."
Dustin was a young man in his late twenties and had been dating Dana for almost a year. Despite the initial excitement and chemistry between them, Dustin had started to feel suffocated and powerless in the relationship. Dana, who had a charming personality and good looks, always wanted to be the center of attention. She often used Dustin's name to get into exclusive clubs and parties, leaving him feeling like an accessory rather than a partner. Her possessive behavior had started to take a toll on Dustin, who felt used and ignored by the woman he loved.
He had been dealing with Dana's self-centered actions for a while. One day, he finally reached his limit and ended their relationship. Although it was a tough decision, Dustin remained resolute in his choice even when Dana tried to win him back with all her might. Despite the heartbreak, he refused to let her manipulative behavior affect him negatively. Instead, Dustin focused on his aspirations and worked hard to achieve them. He pulled out all the stops to stop Dana from obstructing the path toward his goals. He was determined to keep her from casting a shadow on his dreams and ambitions.
Looking back on her relationship with Dana, Dustin realized she had never truly cared for him. She had only been interested in using him for her benefit. And while she may have thought she broke his heart, Dustin knew that he was better than that. He was not crying and was certainly not going to let Dana's selfishness define him.
"And I didn't wanna write a song
'Cause I didn't want anyone thinking I still care
I don't, but you still hit my phone up
And baby, I'll be movin' on
And I think you should be somethin' I don't wanna hold back
Maybe you should know that."
He didn't want anyone to think he still cared about Dana. After all, it had been weeks since they had broken up, and Dustin had moved on with his life. But then, out of nowhere, he received a text from her. His heart skipped a beat as he read her words, even though he knew he shouldn't have let them affect him.
Dana said she missed him and wanted to see him again. Dustin couldn't help but think back to all the good times they had shared, but he knew he couldn't return to that place. It was time to move on. Thus, he replied to her message and stated he didn't feel the same way. It wasn't easy, but he knew it was the right thing to do. He wished Dana all the best and said goodbye.
The following day, he thought a lot about what had happened. Dustin realized he had been holding back his true feelings for a long time. Maybe it was time to let them out and be honest with himself. He decided to reach out to her and let her know how he felt and why he had broken up with her. He also told her he had moved on and advised her to do the same. It was time for both to let go and find happiness elsewhere.
As Dustin hit send on the message, he felt a weight lifted off his shoulders. Dana and himself had been hiding their true feelings for a long time, but finally, both found the courage to be honest. The moment they opened up and expressed their real emotions felt incredibly liberating. It was as if someone had lifted a heavy weight off their shoulders. It was a moment they would never forget as one of their most profound and transformative experiences.
"My mama don't like you and she likes everyone
And I never like to admit that I was wrong
And I've been so caught up in my job, didn't see what's going on
But now I know, I'm better sleeping on my own."
However, Dustin hadn't felt peaceful for too long before he learned a shocking truth. It turned out that Dana has always said bad things about him to her friends and only saw him as a tool. His anger and irritability came out, attracting his mother's attention. She just laughed and said, "I told you."
After Dustin heard that, a thought sparked: He used to observe his mother's behavior around Dana and noticed a certain level of discomfort and disapproval emanating from her. Yet he couldn't quite understand why his mother never seemed to warm up to Dana. Hence, he decided to ask his mother the reason. His mother hesitated but finally admitted that she didn't think Dana was right for him. She assumed that Dana was too impulsive and reckless and that she might lead Dustin down the wrong path.
Dustin was surprised by his mother's words, as he had never seen Dana that way. He had always admired her free spirit and her willingness to take risks. Nonetheless, he appreciated his mother's honesty and reconsidered his current issue.
He then asked Dana to meet for the last time, and she agreed immediately. She must have thought that Dustin wanted to be back with her! When he saw Dana, he brought up the subject and told her what his mother had said. Like he had guessed, Dana was hurt and offended. She exclaimed she couldn't understand why Dustin's mother would think such things about her. She said his mother had judged her unfairly and questioned whether their relationship had ever been worth pursuing. Still, Dustin's words gave her an even bigger shock.
"That's what I think, too!" He laughed, then talked more about those secrets Dana was hiding from him. He told her he would prioritize his job rather than pay attention to what was going on in their relationship. "I have realized that I needed to be more present in my own life and more honest with myself and those around me," he continued. "Dana, you really should be more aware of the impact your actions could have on others. Please be more responsible and reliable!"
"'Cause if you like the way you look that much
Oh baby, you should go and love yourself
And if you think that I'm still holdin' on to somethin'
You should go and love yourself
But when you told me that you hated my friends
The only problem was with you and not them
And every time you told me my opinion was wrong
And tried to make me forget where I came from."
Ignoring Dana's fabricated explanations, Dustin pointed out that she only cared about herself. He said she was always focused on her own needs and desires and never bothered to consider the feelings of others.
"You are used to getting what you wanted without regard for the consequences of your actions!" He shouted, then continued, "After everything you have done, I will never have any feelings for you anymore. If you are that selfish and mean, the only person able to stand you is yourself!"
"But what have I done that annoy you that much?"
"Still don't admit? Fine. Let me remind you some! I have always been proud of my roots, even though I grew up in a small town. It's because the people here are kind and wonderful. You don't like my friends, think they badly influence me, and don't understand why I want to spend time with them, right? I have tried to tell you that my friends are great people and I enjoy spending time with them. But whenever I brought up the topic, you would become angry and try to make me feel guilty for spending time away from you. You always told me my opinion was wrong and that I should only listen to you. Have you noticed I started to feel isolated and alone? Guess what? I have realized that you're the problem, not my friends! I had tried, Dana, but I had had enough. I don't intend to harm my ex, but your actions suggest otherwise. You deserve the hatred!"
"You always put your friends first, do you?" Dana said ironically.
"I used to prioritize you, but now, I will never do that again! You made me feel insignificant, but I still couldn't bring myself to say goodbye. I fell in love with you, and now I feel nothing. I had always been strong, independent, and confident, but you changed everything and made me feel powerless. I trusted you, yet you broke my walls and tore them down without a second thought. Now, I wonder if I were a fool to let you in. I gave you everything, and you took it all for granted. I had never felt so low, but my love for you kept me alive. Still, you didn't appreciate it, so it's time to block you out of my life!"
"You think you can live without me?" Dana asked in an angry tone.
"At least I can live better than you!" Dustin smiled, then walked away from her and never looked back. He knew he would not let her break him down any further. Dustin wouldn't let Dana make him feel small again and would take back his power to rebuild himself, piece by piece. Thus, with a newfound determination, he regained strength, independence, and confidence and promised never to let anyone rob him of that sense again. It was a pledge he held close to his heart, a declaration that spoke to his unyielding determination and resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges ahead, Dustin remained steadfast in his resolve to protect what was rightfully his. It wouldn't be easy, but he knew he had to do it.
Now, as Dustin realized it was vital to stay true to himself and not let anyone else dictate his choices, he felt better than ever. While returning home, he hummed to the lyrics of "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber, which changed his viewpoint about his relationship:
"For all the times that you made me feel small
I fell in love, now I feel nothin' at all
I never felt so low and I was vulnerable
Was I a fool to let you break down my walls?"
