Sundown had always been a unique time for Amber. It was when she felt most connected to the world around her. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, she would wander around the city, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling streets. But no matter where she went, she always seemed to end up on Garfield's side of town. His neighborhood was quiet and peaceful, a stark contrast to the chaos of the city center. She used to go there often, to his small apartment, where they would spend hours talking and laughing. However, now, he was gone. Garfield had moved away, leaving Amber with only memories and a deep longing. She tried to move on and find new friends and places to explore, but nothing felt right. During her walks, she often put on her earplugs and listened to a song by Joni called "Orange" because it reminded her so much about her love story.

"Sundown I wander around

And always end up on your side of town

You used to say you'd never move away

But even if you do

All the avenues I named for you

Will stay the same, always hold your place."

Amber had always been a creature of habit. She liked things to be just so, and any deviation from her routine would unsettle her. For years, she had been in a relationship with Garfield. They had been inseparable, spending every moment together, creating traditions and habits they all loved. But things started to change when Garfield got a new job in a different city, whereas Amber could not leave her current one behind. They tried to make it work, but the distance proved too much, and they eventually decided to break up. Amber was devastated. She found herself going through the motions of her daily routine. Nevertheless, everything felt hollow and empty without Garfield by her side. She missed how they used to count the windows to the fire escape of their favorite restaurant and the plans they would make for their future together.

So, every evening, as the sun set, Amber started walking down the familiar streets of his old neighborhood. She would visit the coffee shop they used to frequent, sit on the bench they once shared, and gaze up at the stars above. Amber seemed to be trying to hold something slipping away, which could never be recaptured. Still, she could not help it. All streets, buildings, and the air around Amber kept a piece of Garfield. Hence, she could not let go. As she walked, she began to name the avenues after him, a small tribute to the love she had lost. Each street sign became a reminder of the moments they shared, the laughter, the tears, and the promises they made. They would always be a testament to the love they once had. And in that thought, Amber found some comfort, some solace amid her sadness.

"Old habits hard to break

I count the windows to your firе escape

Miss all the plans wе make, can we make 'em again

So we can break 'em again?

And I'll be your dying star

I'll be your wilting flower

Just tell me where you are

And I'll come running back."

One day, Amber reached out to Garfield to see if they could try to make things work again. He was hesitant at first but eventually agreed to meet with her. As they sat across from each other at a coffee shop, Amber realized that some things had changed. They were different people now, with different dreams and goals. But she also discovered that some things never alter. They still had that same connection: that same spark that had drawn them together in the first place. Hence, they decided to give their relationship another try in hopes of breaking their old habits and creating new ones together. They went on adventures, tried new things, and made plans for the future. However, Amber could not help but feel a sense of comfort in the old habits they had once shared. She counted the windows leading to the fire escape, and they made more plans only to break them again. Moreover, even though they had started creating new memories and practices, Amber knew certain things would always be the same. Garfield would always be her dying star, and she would always be his wilting flower. And no matter where life took them, they would always come running back to each other. In that moment, Amber felt a sense of peace and contentment that she had never felt before. She knew that life was unpredictable, that it could throw unexpected twists and turns at any moment. But with Garfield by her side and the possibility of a new love on the horizon, Amber felt ready to face whatever the future held.

"'Cause we belong getting lost in the orange glow

Drive around downtown 'cause you can't go home

Touching you feels like forever ago, oh

Talking hushed, head rush from the heavy smoke

Wash it down with the sound of the stereo

Touching you feels like forever ago

And I can't let go

Touching you feels like forever ago

And I can't let go

Touching you feels like forever ago."

One night, when Garfield and Amber were driving back from one of their adventures, she saw a sign for the nearest big city. She suggested they take a road trip, and he agreed. As they drove through the city, Amber was captivated by the bright lights, the towering buildings, and the endless possibilities that seemed to stretch out before her. They drove around downtown, taking in the sights and sounds and getting lost in the orange glow of the city. As the night wore on, they found themselves at a rooftop bar, surrounded by the heavy smoke and the thumping beat of the music. Amber felt alive, her head buzzing with the thrill of the moment. Then, she saw Garfield. He was standing at the other end of the bar with mysterious eyes that seemed to hold secrets of the universe. Amber found herself inexplicably drawn towards him, her feet carrying her closer until she was beside him. The air was thick with smoke, and she felt a heady rush as she spoke to him in hushed tones, their voices barely audible over the crowd's din. They talked for hours, lost in the moment, washing it with the stereo's sound. The sensation of every touch lingered on Amber's skin, evoking a sense of profound intimacy with Garfield. When midnight came close, the thought of leaving was unbearable. Amber found herself unwilling to relinquish their hold on each other. She knew they had to do this to feel that rush again. So, they made a promise before returning home.

While they, once more, drove through the bustling city and basked in its warm orange glow, Amber's thoughts wandered to the past when she had touched Garfield. It felt like an eternity ago, yet it was as vivid as ever. She remembered the warmth that had spread through her body and how she had never felt so alive. However, this time, she was determined not to let go. At that moment, she knew beyond a doubt that they had to be together. No matter what obstacles lay in their path, she was willing to face them if it meant being with him. The truth of her love for Garfield was unshakeable, and nothing in the world could ever alter that truth.

"You used to say

That everything

Would circle back

Around someday

You used to say

That everything

Would circle back

Around someday."

Amber used to doubt the truth of these words from "Orange" by Joni after she and Garfield fell apart. She had lost too many things along the way. Excluding her boyfriend, Amber had lost some friends, loved ones, dreams, and aspirations. In addition, try as she might, none of them seemed to go around. Thus, Amber had once become disillusioned, bitter, and angry. She used to feel like the world had betrayed her, that nothing was fair, and that life was just a cruel joke. Amber struggled to uncover meaning in her life, and she wondered if those words had been nothing more than empty promises. But even in her darkest moments, she held onto a glimmer of hope. She remembered the times when things had come back around for her, and she hoped that they would again.

Luckily, after reuniting with Garfield, Amber started believing in those words once more. She accepted that even if things did not work out the way she wanted them to, eventually, they would come back around. Garfield once rescued her from feeling lost, alone, and hopeless, and now he did it again by giving her love and care. He even gave her more hopes about their future during the next date, and from that day on, Amber saw the world in a new light. She realized that everything did be back someday, that the things she had lost were never truly lost. Amber held onto that belief throughout her life. Therefore, Amber reminded herself it was the circle of fates whenever she faced hard challenges or setbacks. She wished it could be true. And often, it did. She found that things had a way of working themselves out, even if it took time.
