Thin Ice

ArielleViennant

I groggily opened my eyes. I saw Daisy, hands tied behind her, sitting in a chair and tried to yell out to her. She was still unconscious. I, on the other hand, was about 3/4 conscious. My hands were tied above me and my mouth was gagged. My feet dangled a little bit off the ground. We were in some abandoned warehouse, and I wondered how our kidnapper had gotten past Hunter, Lincoln, and Mack. The sharp pain in my neck was fading as I became more conscious. I spotted a weird red dot and veins coming off of Daisy's neck and realized it was some sort of Icer. All my questions were answered when Derick came into view. I tried to say his name, but it came out something like "Derwhick" because of the bandana. There was a small chance that our companions were dead. Derick could, and usually did, make an ice shell around people. He pulled down the bandana and I took a deep breath. "Let Daisy go." He laughed and Daisy started to wake up. Before she could move, he calmly picked up a syringe and stabbed it into her neck. "That should keep you from causing an earthquake for a while. As for you, Ari, you're a bit more difficult. Sure, I've already disabled your flames, but that's not your only power. I can't make a cure for a secret power." I smirked. "It's not like you could. Maybe a tinfoil hat would work better." Derick looked confused for a moment, then his face dropped. He left the room for a minute. "Don't worry. My mind is in such a jumble, I can't pick the thoughts apart yet. Both of yours are harder to read than Hunter's. Mack and Lincoln are pretty hard to read, though. Simmons is an open book. It's terribly hard to decipher what Fitz is thinking, and when I can it's all sciency stuff. Contact is the only way I can actually know what someone is thinking." Daisy nodded and started to work at the nylon rope around her hands. Derick walked back in, cleaning a knife. Daisy stood up and pulled down the bandana. Derick turned and stuck the knife in the side of her stomach. A dribble of blood came out from her mouth and she fell to her knees, then down to the ground. Derick proper her back up in the chair, freezing her wound and her hands. "No!" I yelled, and Derick just stayed indifferent. Tears streamed down my face. Derick put his hand on my cheek. "Shh. Don't cry. They were going to hurt you." He pulled the bandana back around my mouth. From him touching my face, I managed to uncover a memory. He was yelling at someone out of view, obstructed by a wall. "My experiment was successful, so let her go! You don't need her!" The other man laughed and I recognized him. Ward chuckled and I moved, bringing him into view. He smirked. "You're wrong. Her alien biology needs studying. As a great man once said, 'discovery requires experimentation.' Gideon himself requested it." I blinked a few times and came out of the memory. I heard a click of a gun barrel and looked out onto one of the balconies. A sniper's aim was on Derick's head. I leaned forward, kicking down Derick. I cried out as the bullet entered my neck. Blood streamed down my side and I lost consciousness.

Daisy's POV

I slowly opened my eyes. When my vision cleared, the man Ari called "Derick" had taken her off the hook that pulled her up. She was bleeding heavily from her neck, and he was cradling her. He grabbed a pair of tweezers from a nearby table and dug out a large sniper's bullet. He froze over the wound and picked Adi up, bridal style. I heard a crash from the door to the warehouse and a S.H.I.E.L.D. team came running in. Derick stood, leaving behind some blood, and flew up to the balcony. He kicked the sniper unconscious and multiple times after. Using his magical dust evaporation thing, he disappeared with Ari as my team came running in. Mack untied my bandana and started to chip away at my hands. "He got away with her. He had some sort of red Icer that disabled Ari's fire and my earthquakes. They seemed to have some sort of personal attachment, so I don't think he would hurt her. A sniper up on the balcony shot her in the neck." Hunter climbed up to the balcony and poked the sniper. "Not one of ours." I stood up and shook my hands out. "Hydra? They were aiming for the guy who kidnapped us. She kicked him down and took the bullet." Mack looked out the window. "He's carrying an injured girl. He can't get far like that." I shook my head. "Yes, he can. Remember that time when we found Ari and the man evaporated? That was him. They're gone."
