Part 5 Unbelievable
Khushi applied for the job, and she received the acknowledgement. She had to give an interview in three days. So she started preparing for it.
Khushi saw Akshaya at her doorstep. Khushi frowned, seeing her. Akshaya entered, smiling at Khushi. Though Khushi became irritated seeing her, she kept silent. She didn't know why Akshaya was there.
Akshaya saw a book in Khushi's hand.
"What are you doing?"
Khushi looked at her sharply.
"Ohh... You are studying... But why? Are you going to give an exam?"
Khushi blinked her eyes without answering.
"Or, are you going to give an interview?"
"What do you want? Why are you here?" Khushi asked, not showing her annoyance.
"I'm here to show you something..."
"What?" She asked with disinterest.
Akshaya took out a pair of bangles from the pocket of her kurti. Khushi widened her eyes and snatched them from her.
"What the hell... How dare you take them from my cupboard? Why did you steal them from me?"
"Hey... Relax... Those are not your bangles..." She said coolly.
"Whaaat? What are you saying? Those are my mother's bangles..."
"No... This is not your mother's. In fact, these are not gold bangles but imitations." She grinned.
Khushi looked at the bangles in disbelief.
"Can't you believe? Go and check your mother's bangles, if they are there or not..."
Khushi observed the bangles keenly.
"I saw these bangles in a gift shop. I bought them without a second thought. So that people will think, these are our family bangles."
Khushi stuffed the bangles and said.
"I know these are not my mother's bangles."
"Oh... Really?" Akshaya teased.
"I have work... Leave,"
"Khushi, I'm your elder sister. Show some respect..."
Khushi rolled her eyes.
"Ok, ok, don't get temper... I'm going. Study well... You have to get a job. Poor you, you have no one for yourself. You might not like me, but I have a mother to take care of, unlike you..."
"Get out..." Khushi pushed her out and slammed the door
Arnav jerked at the door sound. He didn't know what made Khushi close the door like that. He peeped out and pulled his head swiftly, seeing Akshaya outside Khushi's portion. He was supposed to close the door when he saw Jithendar coming with a guy. He saw them going to Akshaya's portion and rang the bell. Chandni came out.
Arnav waited there and watched them.
"You asked me to bring a tenant to your house. This boy wants a rental house. That's why I brought him here. If you are ready to have a bachelor as a tenant, give him your house..." Jithendar said.
"What are you doing?" Chandni asked the boy.
"Working in the IT sector."
Oh, ok. The rent is twelve thousand. Three months' rent should be given as an advance."
"Jee..."
"The rent should be paid before the tenth of each month."
"Jee... Shall I see the portion?"
"Show him the portion," Chandni told Akshaya.
She nodded and walked, looking at the man. He followed her. Akshaya opened the door and entered. The man saw the portion that was identical to Arnav's.
The guy liked it because he had no option. He knew a bachelor like him could not get a rental house like this if he missed it.
"Do you like it?" Akshaya asked.
"Yes..."
"Are you fine with the rent?"
"Of course..."
"Don't you think it's too much?" She asked because she knew Khushi had asked Arnav only ten thousand.
"I can manage, even though it's too much..."
"How much is your salary?" She asked thoughtfully.
"Eighty thousand... "
"Whasaaat? Eighty thousand?" She was surprised.
He nodded yes.
"What's your name?"
"Suraj."
"Nice name..." She grinned.
The next three days flew by for Khushi because she became busy preparing for the interview. But Arnav's time moved more slowly than usual. Because neither Akshaya nagged him nor Khushi shouted at him for entertaining Akshaya. Arnav witnessed a huge difference in Akshaya's behaviour. She didn't give heed to him. In fact, Arnav didn't even see her around him. He ate rottis with his mother's handmade pickle.
Interview day
Khushi was ready for the interview. She was highly nervous, even though she had prepared well. She was not sure her preparation was enough. She wanted the job. She had no money except for the advance amount given by Arnav. She wanted to find a job before it was too late.
Akshaya was right. Khushi had no one for herself to take care of. Even if she fell sick, she herself should take care of herself. She could do that if she had money. She should earn, at least to take care of herself. She had to safeguard herself. To do that, she needed a job.
She prayed for her late parents and came out. She was struck to see Arnav waiting. He was also struck to see her in a violet saree.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
Arnav composed himself, hearing her voice.
"Today is your interview..."
"Mmm... So?"
"I will drop you."
"Why? Do you want to reduce a hundred rupees from the rent?"
"So what? I guess you don't know the location. You should walk into the interior from the main road. It's almost a kilometre. You can't walk. Or, you will not be fresh if you walk. Or, you should give a hundred rupees if you hire an auto. However, I will go to my office crossing the office... So, dropping you will not harm me."
"Mmm... Good analysis..."
Arnav pressed his lips. He didn't know whether she was appreciating or taunting.
"Will you come with me?" He asked.
"Ok, you should reduce a hundred rupees from the rent only if I get the job..."
Arnav sighed.
"Kanjus kahika..." Khushi murmured.
"Madam, we should save money for our future. We should not spend money unnecessarily..."
"Unnecessarily? And you? Hua..." She locked the door.
"You are talking as if you don't mind spending money? You, too, are the same as me, madam..." He said.
"Are you coming, or not?" She asked.
"Of course, I'm coming..."
"Yeah, how could you miss a chance to reduce the rent?" Khushi mocked.
Arnav started the car. Khushi took the back seat. Arnav drove the car towards the company. Neither of them talked. After half an hour, they reached the destination. Arnav got out of the car and opened the door for Khushi. She got down.
"This is the company," Arnav said.
Khushi saw many boys and girls going with their files. She suddenly became nervous.
"I'm going..." She said.
"Good luck, madam..."
Khushi nodded and walked, observing the surroundings. She sensed something weird. Her hands were empty. She left her file in the car. She again rushed out to get her file, before Arna left. Of course, Arnav would bring it if he had seen it. But she kept the interview card's printout in the file. Without that, she could not register her name. She was not sure Arnav would bring it before closing the registration.
She huffed in relief, seeing Arnav still there. He was talking on the phone, leaning on the car, facing his back to her. She came to him and got stuck listening to him talking in ENGLISH fluently. The accent he used sounded British. Didn't he say he was uneducated? Then how could he speak English stylishly?
Arnav sensed someone behind him. He turned around and saw Khushi with an unnamed expression. He was also struck by seeing her.
To be continued...
