10.
The car crashed into Professor Yang’s car, knocking him unconscious.
“Yoboseyo? There’s just been an accident on Namjeon Road.”
The ambulance arrived and rushed Professor Yang to the hospital.
“How is the patient’s condition?”
“Stable, sir. His heart rate and blood pressure are normal.”
Professor Yang only had a minor head injury, but the wound in his abdomen was quite deep.
“Call the patient’s family.”
“There’s no contact information for parents here.”
“Then call the most recent number.”
“Nae.”
The number dialed was Sol A’s.
“Yoboseyo? Are you a relative of Yang Jong Hoon?”
“Is something wrong?”
“Yang Jong Hoon was in a car accident and is now at Namjeon Hospital.”
“Nae?”
Hearing that, Sol A rushed downstairs, grabbed a taxi, and cried the whole way, terrified of how badly Professor Yang might be hurt.
At the hospital, she searched frantically while sobbing.
“Where is patient Yang Jong Hoon?”
“Over there.”
Sol A ran over and pulled the curtain aside. She saw Professor Yang lying on the bed, clutching his abdomen and grimacing. She froze, unable to say anything, tears streaming down her face.
“Why are you crying?” he asked, which only made her cry harder.
“Waegudae?”
“What happened to you? How could this happen?” she shouted through her tears.
“Uljima. If you cry, I’ll cry too. I’m fine, don’t cry.” He held her hand as he spoke. Sol A sat down on the bed and hugged him tightly, weeping.
“Do you know how worried I was? I was so scared something would happen to you.”
“If you keep crying, I’ll worry about you even more.”
She stopped crying and carefully lifted his shirt to check the wound.
“Does it hurt a lot?”
“Yeah, it does.”
She looked up at his face to see if he had other injuries.
“Is your head hurt anywhere?”
“Here.” He pointed to his cheek.
“Where?”
“Here.”
“Yaaa, how can you joke at a time like this?”
He put on an innocent, pitiful expression, and Sol A kissed his cheek. Just then, the doctor walked in.
“Are you his girlfriend?”
“Nae.”
“Then make sure you disinfect and change his bandages twice a day. The abdominal wound is deep, so he can’t do it himself or make sudden movements.”
“Nae.”
“Can I be discharged, doctor?”
“Yes.”
Sol A helped him to the car. On the way home, her face was cold, still upset.
“Waegudae? Are you still mad?”
“Ani.”
“Mianhae.”
“I’m not mad. I’m just scared.”
“You were worried about me?”
“Uhhh.”
“Gwaenchana.”
At his house, she helped him to the sofa.
“Your house is so big, but so empty and dark.”
“I like it this way.”
“What’s there to like about this darkness?”
“So you can shine. Everything around me is dark, but you’re the one who brings light.”
“Wow, even hurt like this and you’re still flirting?”
“I’m serious.”
“Enough.” Sol A said as she walked into the kitchen.
“Where are you going?”
“To cook porridge.”
“Do you even know how?”
“Even if I don’t, I have to, because starting tomorrow I’ll be here to take care of you.”
“Jinjja?”
“Nae.”
Hearing this, Professor Yang grew excited, staring at Sol A as she cooked. She looked so charming that he was frozen, wanting nothing more than to hold her.
An hour later
“Porridge is ready! Try it.”
He took a spoonful.
“Otte?”
“Masittso.”
“Jinjja?”
“Yeah.”
Pleased by his compliment, Sol A beamed. He kept eating enthusiastically, even though the flavor was a little off.
Afterward, she cleaned up and returned to the dorm.
“I’m leaving now. What do you want for breakfast tomorrow?”
“Anything.”
“Okay, I’ll go then.”
“Call me when you get back.”
“Nae.”
Fifteen minutes later
“Yoboseyo?”
“I’m home now.”
“Umm.”
“Don’t forget your medicine and go to bed early.”
“Umm.”
“I’ll come tomorrow to change your bandages.”
“Umm.”
“Nothing else to say to me?”
“Good night.”
“Fine, you too.”
The next morning
Sol A woke up early to shop for groceries. She bought a lot and while walking, someone tapped her shoulder.
“Joon Hwi!!!”
“Yaa Sol A, why are you buying so much?”
“Ah, it’s nothing.”
“Want me to carry it for you?”
“Ani.”
She paid quickly and hurried to Professor Yang’s house.
“Gyosunim!!!”
“I’m here.”
He opened the door without a shirt, making Sol A blush and turn away.
“What are you doing?”
“I was about to change the bandages. What’s wrong? Nothing to be shy about.”
“I told you I’d do it for you!”
She set the groceries on the table, then saw him struggling with the bandages and rushed over.
“You’re not supposed to move around.”
“I didn’t want you to be late for class, so I tried to do it myself.”
“Gwaenchana.”
Sol A carefully removed the bloody bandage, frowning at how deep and long the wound was.
“That must hurt so much, right?”
“Ani.”
“How could the wound be this deep…” She gently blew on it.
“I’m the one injured, but why do you look like you’re the one in pain?”
She glared at him, shutting him up immediately.
After bandaging him, Sol A went to the kitchen.
“What are you making today?”
“Soup.”
“What kind of soup?”
“Secret.”
When it was ready, she served it to him.
“Otte?”
“Masittso.”
This time it tasted better than before. They ate while laughing happily together.
But soon, it was time for class.
“I’m going now.”
“You’ll come back after class?”
“Yes!!!”
“Okay, go.”
To be continued.
