After that day, Sol A realized she liked looking at Professor Yang more than usual, but she didn’t know why she felt that way. Whenever she didn’t see him, she found herself searching for his presence.

The next day

During Professor Yang’s class, the whole class sat waiting as usual, but this time he didn’t seem well. Sol A noticed his pale face and asked, “Gyosunim, are you okay?” The professor just nodded and continued with his lecture. After class, he returned to his office. Sol A wanted to follow him, but she still had Professor Kim’s class, so she couldn’t. Once her class ended, she ran to his office to return the money he had paid for her at the store the other day.

At the door: “Gyosunim! May I come in?” She didn’t hear him respond, so she called again
“Gyosunim! Are you there?” Seeing the door unlocked, Sol A stepped inside and was shocked to see Professor Yang unconscious on the floor. Joon Hwi, hearing her scream, ran over and saw the professor lying motionless. Sol A and Joon Hwi quickly brought him to the nearby hospital.

“What happened to him, doctor?”
“He had a high fever, but because he didn’t take medicine or eat properly, he fainted.”

Hearing this, Sol A felt a bit relieved. Since she still had class, Joon Hwi left, but Sol A stayed to take care of him. She sat holding his hand and gently caressing his face without thinking. Suddenly, he woke up: “What are you doing?” Sol A froze, unsure of what to say, but her hand still rested on his face while the other held his hand. They stared at each other for a few seconds before she realized he was awake and withdrew her hand.

“What are you doing here?”
“Earlier you fainted, so Joon Hwi and I brought you here.”
“Where’s Joon Hwi?”
“He went back to school for class.”
“Then why didn’t you go back to class and stayed here?”
“I…” Sol A didn’t know how to answer and quickly changed the subject.

“Come eat with me, the doctor said you didn’t eat anything, that’s why you fainted.”
“I already told you I don’t eat with my students.”
“But this isn’t at school.”

The professor, seeing no other choice, went to eat with Sol A. During the meal, she laughed and talked a lot, happy to be eating with her professor, and he started to see this interesting girl in a new light.

Back at home, Professor Yang recalled her holding his hand and touching his face at the hospital. A strange feeling stirred inside him, though he didn’t know what it was. Sol A, meanwhile, lay in bed remembering herself holding his hand and touching his face, smiling unconsciously.

The next morning

There was a criminal law test today. The class was anxious because Professor Yang’s tests were always difficult. It was Sol A’s first test since transferring, so she was very nervous. Professor Yang entered the classroom and began handing out the papers, going desk by desk. When he reached Sol A, he paused to look at her before continuing.
“You have 30 minutes, begin.”

Reading the questions, everyone was worried because the test was hard. Ye Sul turned to ask Sol A, but the professor caught her: “Ye Sul, bring your paper here to me.” Ye Sul had no choice but to comply and ended up getting a zero. Sol A focused entirely on her own test, unaware that Professor Yang was watching her from the lectern.

When the time ended, Professor Yang didn’t collect the papers himself but asked Sol A:
“Kang Sol A!”
“Nae?”
“Stand up and collect the papers for me.”
“Nae.” Sol A collected them and brought them to him, but he didn’t take them.
“Take them to my office.”
“Nae?”

Sol A went to his office and handed him the test papers. He suddenly asked
“Did you manage to finish the test?”
“Yes, sir.”
“That’s good.”

Sol A didn’t know why he asked, but she felt happy that he cared.

The next day

The test scores were out, and the class was nervous, expecting the usual scolding. The professor entered, and his eyes first found Sol A.
“How did you all do on this test?”
“The test was too hard, sir,” Min Bok Gi replied.
“Do you know who got the highest score this time?”
“Who?” The class was confused and started whispering.
“Kang Sol A, the new transfer student.”
“Nae?” Sol A was both happy and shocked to hear her name announced as the top scorer. The class was surprised that she was so smart.
After class, Sol A ran to him and asked, “Is it true I got the highest score, sir?”
“Umm.”

She was delighted and couldn’t stop smiling all day thinking about him mentioning her name in front of the class. A jealous student approached her: “So happy about getting a high score, huh?” Sol A ignored her, but suddenly Professor Yang stepped in
“What did you just say? Repeat that so I can hear.” Sol A turned to him
“When you get a score as high as Sol A, then talk.”

The student dared not say anything and walked away, and the professor left shortly after. Sol A stayed standing there, thinking, “Why did he help me like that?”

That evening, she couldn’t sleep, thinking constantly about the professor.

To be continued.
